Covid

This isn’t going to end, is it....?

I was FaceTiming my friend tonight, I told her we’ve booked a uk break for August.
She laughed at me and said to her husband “should I tell her the bad news or do you want to”

Her husband is a respiratory consultant and said that the new variants of Covid will cause another wave and further lockdowns.

I asked how he could possibly know this and he laughed and said “inside information”

I suffer with anxiety and haven’t stopped crying since I got off of our FaceTime chat.

I can’t do this anymore. I realty can’t 😭

@MrsTerryPratchett

It's bollocks.

Variants generally make diseases more catching and less serious. So either the vaccine or the variants will sort it all out.

The current new variants aren't doing that though, are they?

Did the virus whisper its plans in his ear then?
Not even Boris Johnson has inside information ffs.
The scariest part of all this for me is the NOONE KNOWS!
Not a single living human on this entire planet knows what’s going to happen with this virus in the next 6 -12 months.
If someone actually did know 100% I would actually feel more secure, even if it was lockdowns!

"What was the point of her saying that to you? Even if it were true (I have no idea, I have a D in a science GCSE from over 20 years ago so not in any position to offer expert advice re diseases!) it was unkind of her to say that."

Well, no. I think people need to be prepared either way. I don't think they're necessarily right, but OP shouldn't live in ignorance either.

There’s some kind of weird fetish this virus has brought out in people. Ooh let’s make sure everyone knows their plans will never go ahead because we are all doomed forever. Worst case scenario doom mongers, and they drag every down with them and get a weird sense of satisfaction from it.

@PurpleDaisies

Well yes, *@User133847* but we’ve had high transmission here for a long time which makes mutations more likely.

Yes, because of flawed policy, but with the mass vaccinations that should be a thing of the past by the summer which means open borders bringing in mutations is the risk.

I have a friend who's a doctor who says similar things. Says he knows because he's in touch with virologists, but lots of people talk to virologists.
This guy's a doctor too and speaks to experts regularly and he thinks it's basically over, so there is optimist out there, we just need to not let our optimist run away if you see what I mean. Keep an open mind.

My friends husband is a consultant though so either he’s a massive twat and he’s trying to make me more anxious or he really does know something.
He is a massive twat

I've heard it straight from Jesus that you'll be enjoying a lovely holiday in August.

Respiratory consultant, eh? So not an epidemiologist or microbiologist or an actual expert. He should stick to lungs, not viruses and epidemics.

They are being unkind. No one knows. I had a lovely UK break last summer, luckily chose the nice week in August. We have a holiday abroad booked this summer. We booked it early last year when we didn't know what we know now. I'm not cancelling yet but I'm keeping an open mind. I firmly believe this summer we will be in a better position than we were last year. But if we don't go abroad or UK holiday I'm prepared for it. I refuse to be negative , positivity keeps me going.

Never in history has any pandemic not ended. Of course this will end. Vaccine roll out will be completed by the summer. Groups already vaccinated account for 90% of those at risk of serious illness.
I'm not a scientist, I have been obsessing over the pandemic and reading lots and lots, I'm feeling very optimistic about the summer. I don't think we'll be 100% back to normal until next year, but it'll be nearly there.

@TheVampiresWife

Lots of people have anxiety. Which is precisely why posting stuff like this is so unhelpful.

We're not responsible for other people's anxiety though. That's a bit like saying the media shouldn't ever give bad news.

They sound like lovely people! They must know it was going to effect you so they clearly just got pleasure out of upsetting you.. maybe phase them out of your life a bit.
I guarantee you'll get your holiday in August Smile I would dare bet a lot of money on it xxx

Remember that?

I know it is cliche but the trust I work for are preparing for worse case scenario and hoping for the best. Many consultants have echoed the above too. That they firmly believe there will be another lockdown.
I hope not but I do think dates are going to be pushed back.

That said. I think you need new friends.

A respiratory consultant, although, of course, holding a very respectable, valuable and high-skilled role, is only marginally better placed to make judgments on the topics of public health and epidemiology on the global level compared to a random person from the street.

"Never in history has any pandemic not ended. "

Well, the Plague is still around, albeit not as a pandemic. The Black Death ended after halving the population...
