I was FaceTiming my friend tonight, I told her we’ve booked a uk break for August.
She laughed at me and said to her husband “should I tell her the bad news or do you want to”

Her husband is a respiratory consultant and said that the new variants of Covid will cause another wave and further lockdowns.

I asked how he could possibly know this and he laughed and said “inside information”

I suffer with anxiety and haven’t stopped crying since I got off of our FaceTime chat.

I can’t do this anymore. I realty can’t 😭

Suddenly everyone on MN has a friend who is an expert in something and knows shit.

It's scare mongering and some people relish in it.

All perfectly computable, with some thought.

Based on the medical students I knew when I was a student, I wouldn't overstress. I would rather have been treated by a team of student vets or accountants most of the time. I reckon the degree part of the course was preliminary to getting them on the wards to really see what sick looked like and if they still wanted to proceed. But some got through.

If you want certain results, then you want aeronautical engineering students; they were failed off the course with a single fail mark from the first term of the degree, in 1974. You had to pass every course exam, every term, for three years, because otherwise no one would get on a plane to go on holiday. There was no graduating not-quite-success mark. Some university courses are relentless and totally judging of success or not. But do you want to travel in a plane designed by someone who wasn't really quite good enough?

Dolciedolly · 05/03/2021 22:49

Some people are nasty ppl here no wonder mental health is on the rise ... get a grip comments are the problem

LaurieFairyCake · 05/03/2021 23:01

The problem is that if there are multiple variants that keep escaping the updated vaccines MAY mean further lockdowns next year - this is a real possibility

Also they've already said there's going to be a third wave, it may be smaller if our vaccine rollout is successful

It's a total shit show with the third wave in Germany/FrNce/Italy - their vaccination programmes are not keeping pace Sad

Well good news, it looks like our t-cells are fab at combating variants. No-one is listening to this. It’s baffling.

Lynora · 05/03/2021 23:08

Why do people on here seem to want this to never end ? With their sad faces and doom and gloom.

They ignore any positive news and just seem to seek out any negative news.

Because it's crap.

It's a journo coming across some science they don't understand, and making wild claims about it.

T-Cells did the rounds last year as well in numerous "there won't be a second wave" stories.

In general, science write-ups in the media are AWFUL - if you want to know what's happening, you need to stay abreast of the science literature.

ZNation · 05/03/2021 23:17

@Carrotcakeforbreakfast

I know it is cliche but the trust I work for are preparing for worse case scenario and hoping for the best. Many consultants have echoed the above too. That they firmly believe there will be another lockdown. I hope not but I do think dates are going to be pushed back.

That said. I think you need new friends.

When do they think the next lockdown will be then? Soon with the kids going back, or November/December?
Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 05/03/2021 23:26

It's like putting out fires in the Australia bush with the doomsters around here sometime

So far the vaccines are showing they work to greatly reduce hospitalisations and death against all the variants. The latest leaked information about AZ is it provides good protection against the Brazilian variant. Those results will be out later in the month apparently.

I think there were some links on here earlier but if not they will be on the good news thread

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 05/03/2021 23:29

Yes hospitals are they get back to normal will be asked to make a plan for future waves. That is normal. They will also have a plans for terrorist attacks, fires, finding a bomb, chemical leaks and anything else that could happen.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 05/03/2021 23:32

The third wave current hitting Germany etc is the Kent variant started potentially here. So very unlikely to hit us again hard. Not least because we already know the vaccines we are using work very well against them

RedRiverShore · 06/03/2021 05:53

Only on MN is there so much crying, do people really come off a FaceTime call then sit there bawling for the rest of the night.

KikoMiko · 06/03/2021 07:07

One top scientist seems to think the new variants won't hold us back. Paywalled but you get the gist.

MRex · 06/03/2021 07:12

The NHS has to prepare for the worst, to not get caught short of supplies again.

He's a massive twat, there is no certainty of it all going badly wrong again in the summer.
She is a massive twat for encouraging or even allowing her DH to be nasty.
OP is a massive twat either for making this up, or for keeping them in her life.

Infections are falling and vaccinations increasing; there will be blips and outbreaks, but the worst is past. I wouldn't expect all travel abroad to be issue-free by summer, especially to countries further behind in their vaccination programmes. Travel in the UK should be fine though. Autumn may bring some more challenges, but that's far with away to be very unpredictable and may just as easily be fine.

ChameleonClara · 06/03/2021 07:27

Whilst I agree this consultant wouldn't know one way or another, the hubris on this thread makes me wince.

We all hope it'll go well but overconfidence brings greater risk we'll fuck it up (again).

Bythemillpond · 06/03/2021 07:39

I don’t know why she said it. Her husband had such a smirk on his face too. Like he knew how much it was going to get to me

He is going to look like a twat when it doesn’t happen

Chickady · 06/03/2021 08:05

Not being funny but this time last year people who posted saying we'd still be in lockdowns in Jan/Feb 2021 were called doom mongers and look how that turned out.

I've learned not to take anything for granted tbh. I don't know what's going to happen. None of us do.

ZenNudist · 06/03/2021 08:08

If this is real dont bother with them any more.

August will be OK. It's October you want to worry about.

Xenia · 06/03/2021 08:15

The new legislation is out by the way - Health Protection (Coronavirus) (Wearing of Face Coverings in a Relevant Place and Restrictions: All Tiers) (England) (Amendment) Regulations 2021
www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2021/247/made/data.pdf

They are not really school related.
The summary says:

"These Regulations amend the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Wearing of Face Coverings in a Relevant Place) (England) Regulations 2020 (S.I. 2020/791) to make provision in relation to the wearing of face coverings in polling stations.

These Regulations also amend the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (All Tiers) (England) Regulations 2020 (S.I. 2020/1374) to permit outdoor recreation, gatherings related to electoral activities, to introduce a requirement to declare the reason for leaving or being outside the place where a person is living, when that person is travelling outside the United Kingdom, and to make other minor amendments. "

I think the first part means you cannot be forced to wear a face covering in a polling station even if you are not exempt

“(7A) Where the relevant place is premises which contain a polling station for an election or referendum which is held in accordance with provision made by or under an Act, the powers in this regulation may not be exercised so as to prevent a voter who is otherwise entitled to vote at the polling station in any such election or referendum from doing so.”.

Hopefully someone who knows more about this can confirm that.

They also deal with travel so I suppose that new form those going abroad have to complete by Monday and that kind of thing.

She's probably just jealous that you're going on holiday

I think if they wanted a holiday they could probably book their own!
Crackerofdoom · 06/03/2021 08:27

I used to work in professional sport. I had dinner at a friend's house who is a GP and one of his friends there was an orthopedic surgeon.

He told us with great glee that one of the international players at the club I worked for had an injury he was keeping quiet and that his playing career was over. This was a really, really big deal for the club and the national team.

That player is still playing a decade later.

Gossipy twats can end up as doctors too.

We plan for the worst and hope for the best. That is how we will all get through this.

minniemoocher · 06/03/2021 08:28

My exh is a virologist, they are studying the mutations. The vaccine will help to reduce disease in their experiments plus as we gradually get mild cases will are building up antibodies.

The best way to explain it to take the common cold - for most people it's an annoyance, sniffles, bit of a temperature, perhaps a cough but nothing more than vicks vapour rub and a dose of paracetamol needed ... however when a researcher in the Amazon carried a normal cold virus to an uncontacted tribe they got really sick because they had no antibodies, these give us partial immunity hence mild disease.

Even though covid is mutating we are each building up our arsenal of defence and in their models for those who are not immunocompromised it shouldn't pose a threat after that, most likely to be dealt with by an annual booster in the autumn just like flu.

Our bodies didn't know how to cope with this new virus, though I like many was very mildly affected despite risk factors - I think this was because I was living in an area with a sars outbreak 20 years ago.
