😩😔

Scotland saying no holidays for summer?
OP posts:
CKBJ · 16/02/2021 20:49

NS said holidays overseas highly unlikely, very different to no holidays for summer. I don’t think Scotland will be alone in saying this. More travelling out of the country is more likely to encourage new variants.

ineedaholidaynow · 16/02/2021 20:51

Australia banned crossing state borders for a while not just international borders.

ineedaholidaynow · 16/02/2021 20:54

Do those posters think the Government are just scare mongering with new variants do you think the Kent variant was made up, didn’t impact the rates and didn’t cause people to die?

I think a lot of people are just at breaking point, tbh.
xHeartinacagex · 16/02/2021 20:56

Pretty much what I was expecting to be honest. At this point I'll be happy enough if I get a UK break!

No, I don’t think it was made up. I think it is real - and also that the vaccine is effective against it.

This is what the vaccine is for - to allow us to get back to normal life as the risk of hospitalisation and death is HUGELY reduced.

We are going to need to live with COVID. Live with it, holiday with it, travel with it.

frumpety · 16/02/2021 21:00

I wonder what the impact will be on the Scottish independence campaign if everyone in Scotland has to holiday in Scotland this year ?

FredUpNow · 16/02/2021 21:06

Yes I'd like to see our elderly parents before they are gone. Particularly as I can do so without using public transport or stopping off anywhere between the two households.

Exactly. So people will do just that. And tell whatever lie needed. Because the expectations have become ridiculous and the rules draconian and I don't think it's even entirely legal what she's doing.

Especially if by some miracle people from England are permitted to holiday in Spain/Greece etc.
PersonaNonGarter · 16/02/2021 22:36

My Indy-supporting friends are pretty quiet at the moment.

Vaccines, Salmond, EU triggering NI Protocol, plus everyone wanting to ‘get back to normal’ - just not the ideal conditions for the SNP to run the massive Indy Ref 2 campaign they expected to run right now.

@Crazycatlady83

How does she propose to pay to support the travel industry (which employs 1.4 million people in the UK?)

Very easy to say it’s the least of your problems when your income doesn’t rely on it!

easy - she'll just demand that Westminster stumps up the cash, like she always does
Pimlicojo · 16/02/2021 22:47

If people are allowed to holiday abroad then we have to allow people to travel here for tourism too (I work in inbound tourism). It's no good Scottish, or any British people, clamouring for borders to be closed and then expecting to go abroad on holiday!

I will be livid if she does not allow people from the rest of the UK to visit Scotland.

This.

@StarCat2020

Why are people going on about holidays. Much more important things to be concerned about I agree.

The fact that people are even thinking about holidays shows a clear divide between the haves and have nots.

So very true.

Good. Hope it happens.
Lelophants · 17/02/2021 07:24

She's just being honest. Boris won't say until 1st July then go oh yes boarders still closed.

Are you surprised? How else can we keep the vaccinne resistant variants out? :( I used to love travelling but I'd happily give it up for a bit to stop lockdowns in our own country.

Lelophants · 17/02/2021 07:25

Considering how awful it's been and how this south African variant has almost pushed back our vaccinne success me too!
Lelophants · 17/02/2021 07:32

@PersonaNonGarter how can we live with it if we have to constantly lockdown because of vaccinne resistant new variants? And then wait months for the vaccines to work and then it happens again? All because someone must go abroad. Hmm you can already go abroad for serious reasons.

I honestly can't believe people are so desperate to go on holiday they would risk undoing everything we have spent months locking down for. Absolutely unreal. You think we enjoy lockdown? Borders will be down for a while. A lot of countries don't want us as we've managed this so shitly.

I can't believe people can't see through this new variants stuff
Vaccine will give us our lives back
Oh, new variant vaccine may not work so well restrictions to stay
Can you not see what is really happening

RaspberryCoulis · 17/02/2021 08:05

@Crookairroad

I fully expect it to be announced that us Scots can only holiday in Scotland this year. I do not see us being able to travel beyond.
They can fuck right off with that one. We've already booked self-catering accommodation for nasty, manky, virus-ridden England in July and will be going unless it is illegal for us to enter the accommodation in England. Sturgeon - much as she would like to do so - cannot shut the border at Gretna.

It's a nationalist wet dream, they cannot get it through their tiny skulls why anyone would ever want to leave the paradise which is Scotland and have their holidays elsewhere. When you could spend the week in Millport at 12c why would you need the Med? Hmm

Nothing wrong with a holiday in Scotland - we've had some amazing ones. But Nicola fucking Sturgeon doesn't get to dictate my choices in the matter and how I spend my money.

And AGAIN. It's 2021. It's a global society. People travel for all kinds of reasons, just just fucking holidays!

Lockdowns don't work.

This virus and variants and others are here to stay.

And border control is not devolved. What NS is doing is probably illegal and should be challenged. She has FA right to do this as we are part of the UK.

Most right thinking people are not going to stay cooped up in their homes for a ‘vaccine resistant variant’ that doesn’t actually exist yet.

And yes, I do know how viruses mutate. I also know how economies collapse, and how risk works.

Leaving the house for actual benefit - once we’ve reached near-herd immunity with the vaccines - far outweighs the possible benefit of staying inside fearing a potential mutation.

RaspberryCoulis · 17/02/2021 09:16

Absolutely. Chris Whitty, who is the most pessimistic man on the planet, was even saying the other day how the mutations were to be expected and that the vaccine would be tweaked, just as it is for flu each year.

I do think though that some people have been so totally terrified over the last year that they have lost all perspective and ability to evaluate risk.

Subordinateclause · 17/02/2021 10:07

Why do people always talk about 'booking a holiday' as though we are all being gung-ho and blithely planning our next break to the Costa del Sol during the current lockdown? Surely an awful lot of people who had holidays booked last year had them moved by their operator to 2021 like we did? No way did we anticipate in Spring 2020 that we'd not be able to travel in summer 2021.
