Scotland saying no holidays for summer?

@Alfaix

I love my hot holidays but I think this is sensible. UK holidays yes, but we need to keep tighter control of the borders so we can relax restrictions here. Better a more normal daily life than jetting off then another lockdown.
I’d rather get to go away to be honest.

I spend pretty much every holiday (8 to13 weeks a year) in Florida as my home is there and some family. I’m not American, but that’s where our main home is and where we love to be. We work in the UK that’s about it, and one day, when we retire, it will be to the states for at least half the year at a time. The rest of the year will be travelling the world, but not here.

I am not enjoying lockdown and I know I don’t have this choice...but if it was between lockdown or going back to Florida , I’d choose Florida.
If I get the opportunity to go back this year, I will. I’ve got flights booked that can be rescheduled, but I’d rather be on them.

Iamclearlyamug · 16/02/2021 18:28

I don’t understand why travel abroad has to be “illegal”

Sure, make it really difficult and put it out of reach for most people - but don’t ban it.

I’ve been away from my fiancé for over 6 months now - I’ll happily get a PCR test before I fly out, before I return, do a test on day 2 and 8 or whatever bollocks it is now, hell I’d HAPPILY pay £1750 to quarantine in a hotel for 10 days (his country isn’t on the red list, but just to show I’d be happy to follow ANY of the rules) I mean it’d wipe out all my savings but I’d still do it!

But I’m not allowed to leave the UK! Why - if I’m not going to be of any risk? I really hope the government consider relaxing the reasons to travel abroad to include seeing partners/children

FredUpNow · 16/02/2021 18:31

Im not after a holiday but I am concerned that we will not be allowed outside Scotland to visit relatives even for the day.

Christmasfairy2020 · 16/02/2021 18:34

Fingers crossed for holidays. I've had my jab !!

TheCatThatGotTheCream · 16/02/2021 18:39

"You know you're being brainwashed?"

Oh dear.

ilikegrapes21 · 16/02/2021 18:39

I think by July/August there will be a vaccination passport and some travel corridors will open up. Negative tests before travelling will still be required. Although assuming other countries are still social distancing I don't see the point in going away, too much faff.

StarCat2020 · 16/02/2021 18:40

It isn't just being allowed to leave the UK though, it all depends on what country you want to visit.

What country is your partner in?

CeeJay81 · 16/02/2021 18:41

I really hope they allow people to travel from Wales. Haven't seen my family in Scotland for well over a year. even booked a place to stay, so fingers crossed it's allowed.

Iamclearlyamug · 16/02/2021 18:43

@StarCat2020 he’s in Turkey - I’m actually allowed there as it stands, provided I quarantine for 10 days which I would happily do. They’re doing reasonably well with their vaccine rollout and their death toll is way below ours

It’s just putting so much stress on our relationship and I honestly don’t know if we’ll make it through 😭😭

JaninaDuszejko · 16/02/2021 18:44

@blue25

Why are people going on about holidays. Much more important things to be concerned about.
Because for some of us 'holidays' are when we travel to see our family. I've not seen my Mum, brother, sister, nieces, nephews, cousins, Aunt and Uncle since August 2019. If Nicola puts restrictions in place this summer then I won't be able to see them this year either. How many years do I have to wait to hug my Mum?
rawalpindithelabrador · 16/02/2021 18:45

@Crookairroad

I fully expect it to be announced that us Scots can only holiday in Scotland this year. I do not see us being able to travel beyond.
She has NO legal authority to close the border and effectively imprison the country's inhabitants, just none. It's part of the UK and border control is not devolved. She's a bloody control freak who's lost the plot! Not everyone who travels is doing so for a bloody holiday, what a narrow-minded and ignorant way to think.

She can go get knotted. People will use the loophole and go through England. And why shouldn't they? It's the UK, not the Republic of Wee Nippy.

FredUpNow · 16/02/2021 18:45

I have elderly family I want to visit in their back garden which happens to be in England.

Yes I have the privilege of a private vehicle to get me their and back avoiding mingling with anyone else.

But no I do think I'm unreasonable or selfish or living la Vida flipping loca.

None. Fuck her. She doesn't give a shit about you, her family's all around. Go and do it. Go through England if it's not a red list country. Stay a day or two. Drive back. Isolate at home rather than handing over £2k to be imprisoned and then fined even more if you test positive even on day 8. I don't get it, you can be vaccinated twice, test negative twice and she still wants you to be locked up.

Fuck that.

StarCat2020 · 16/02/2021 18:55

Sounds sensible.

The EU aren't letting UK citizens enter right now which may or may change so I don't understand why people are blaming the UK government.

I hope you find a way to see your partner soon

flamingomingeo · 16/02/2021 18:56

She cant legally do that. You can cross borders regardless of whatever tripe she spouts... Her hatred of Boris is such that its just attempted oneupmanship.

StarCat2020 · 16/02/2021 19:06

She cant legally do that
But until the current lockdown laws (yes laws NOT guidance) are repealed then being able to see family depends on whether or not you can use an exemption.

Iamclearlyamug · 16/02/2021 19:07

Thanks @StarCat2020

It’s getting to the stage where I just want to go to the airport and see if they let me board the flight 😢😢 I’m honestly not usually a rule breaker but with no end in sight I don’t know what else to do

Go to England and get out. She's out of control. Crazy control freak.
Beaniecats · 16/02/2021 19:09

But England and Wales are as bad

NotMeekNotObedient · 16/02/2021 19:15

Sounds very sensible with all the new strains. Just holiday in the UK instead?

rawalpindithelabrador · 16/02/2021 19:38

Because some of us have family who are elderly we haven't seen in a year or two, we don't all live in little bubbles Hmm. Some of us aren't going for a fucking holiday.
rawalpindithelabrador · 16/02/2021 19:40

No, they're not if you're not coming from a red list country.

So you get vaccinated twice, have two neg tests before boarding and they still want to lock you up. I mean, hello?

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 16/02/2021 19:41

I get wanting to see family but we have so much technology to keep in touch with and when moving countries contact may always be limited due to other reasons.

So many have lost loved ones they won’t get to see again so it’s better we get it under control so that more have their families to see when it passes.

Technology, nope, not a substitute. I'm one of those who lost a parent to it. It's not going to be get 'under control' by locking up. It will become endemic. It's going nowhere. It's not going to pass. It will keep cropping up and cropping up.
sleepwouldbenice · 16/02/2021 19:46

I would love a holiday abroad, no denying that
But to me it's not about that. It's about what this represents. That somehow this year could be worse than last year. I couldn't cope with that. And I have been pragmatic to date😐
