I know this is a really self indulgent post. So sorry in advance.
I'm worried about captain Tom. I know its ridiculous, I dont know him. Maybe because hes just a bit older than my dad would have been.
But I feel if he dies with coronavirus , it'll be the final straw for me. Hes been the only bright light in this.
If he doesn't recover I think I'll sink.

@Rightleftupdown

They shouldn't have been
No they shouldn't, but as we've seen throughout this pandemic, people will do what's allowed. They'll go where they can.
NerrSnerr · 02/02/2021 15:22

I think he has more than paid his dues to fit with 'the NHS rhetoric'

So because he raised lots of money he should do as he pleases? Do other people get a free pass? What about ICU nurses who have worked all the way through can they stop being careful because they've paid their dues?

SleepingStandingUp · 02/02/2021 15:25

@ParkheadParadise

I'm more shocked that his daughter is 51! Honestly, I thought she must be in her late 70's if he is 100.
When DH is 100, DTwins will be 55. Is that really so unusual? And ours isn't even a second marriage, just a late start. He's been married a few times hasn't he? Friend was early 30s when her Dad turned 100 and her sister was a few years younger
Belladonna123 · 02/02/2021 15:25

'All this bullshit about him deserving the holiday because of his age etc is rubbish'

He didn't 'deserve' the holiday because of his age. He deserved it because of his amazing effort last year.

Good for him 😏

SleepingStandingUp · 02/02/2021 15:26

Captain Tom isn't and wasn't the flame of hope
Just a wick.

Without the millions of people who donated he'd have just been an old man walking up and down his garden.

So take comfort in the fact that so many people came together

Snowdropsanddaffs · 02/02/2021 15:26

I do think going on holiday at Christmas was putting himself and others at risk and a slightly foolish thing to do. I think all the 'influencers' swanning about in Dubai are foolish too.

I have very elderly relatives and if they proposed the idea of a family holiday at Christmas (as much as I would love a holiday in the sun, like I'm pretty sure everyone else) I would say no and recommend they didn't go either. Guess I'm in the minority here but that's my opinion. I wish him well though.

I'm a nurse and I have worked all through this pandemic. I still am. And we ALL think he deserved his holiday.

So try again 😂

I totally agree.
Yes he's old and it's lovely for him he got a nice holiday but we have to be grateful he caught it after returning and not before going, thus opening up a new virus trail in Barbados.

He doesn't deserve it more than the nurses holding the hands of patients dying alone for months on end.

NerrSnerr · 02/02/2021 15:31

@Belladonna123 I'm a nurse too and have worked all the way through and think he was selfish, so not ALL nurses.

@VinylDetective

That’s absolutely awful, he’s embarrassed of his grandchild?! What a keeper you’ve got there.

Will you be so blasé if it is your child who becomes a parent at 17 and he’s embarrassed of them?!

Captain Tom is WHAT??

😂

Wrong thread I think

NerrSnerr · 02/02/2021 15:36

@SleepingStandingUp read the thread, it's a discussion about what age people have children/ grandchildren in relation to Tom being an older father.

ParkheadParadise · 02/02/2021 15:43

@SleepingStandingUp
I genuinely would have guessed his daughter would be in her 70's as he's 100 (that is a mistake to make on MN).
I have never met anyone having a baby at 49 early 40's yes but definitely not 49. My brother is 49 and has 2 Grandchildren.

ThePreviousRooster · 02/02/2021 15:51

Can't you emulate Capt Tom by showing some mettle? Raise some money for the NHS, help some elderly neighbours or have some fun with your family rather than sinking.

GreenSlide · 02/02/2021 15:59

I don't care about what he has done in his personal life, but I am feeling unsettled about him having Covid at the end of his life. He was such a symbol for the good that could still be found in the midst of death and fear. When they recreated him using the drones during the NYE display I got really emotional. And if I was 100 I'd bugger off to Barnardos too given half a chance.

randomer · 02/02/2021 16:05

Tens of thousands of people of all ages have died from this ghastly thing.Many more are fighting for their lives.Each person should be seeking to reduce transmission, not going on a plane. Desperately sad.

LittleRa · 02/02/2021 16:07

Fair enough, we all only live by our experiences . I'm actually sad we'll be so old if we ever get grand kids so I think it's Def nicer to be younger in that way x

He was a symbol but he was just the tiny speck around which hope flamed. Think of how many people gave money to help, wrote letters and cards of support, all people who can take his spirit on and make another positive difference in the world. Maybe we just need to be a bit more Tom

There's two threads already...
