I know this is a really self indulgent post. So sorry in advance.
I'm worried about captain Tom. I know its ridiculous, I dont know him. Maybe because hes just a bit older than my dad would have been.
But I feel if he dies with coronavirus , it'll be the final straw for me. Hes been the only bright light in this.
If he doesn't recover I think I'll sink.

@ParkheadParadise

He sounds a charmer. His Grandchild was an embarrassment to him. ☹☹☹
You can post as many silly faces as you like, I doubt many people would be thrilled if their 17 year old became a father.
smoothchange · 02/02/2021 12:09

@VinylDetective

I wouldn't be thrilled 😁 f any of mine became parents at 17. I wouldn't consider them an embarrassment though, how awful/

LunaHeather · 02/02/2021 12:15

intheend glad to hear it. Hopefully things have changed by now but mum refused a hospital admission in summer because the paramedics said there would be no visiting.

Fembot123 · 02/02/2021 12:37

I’d be disappointed for them as don’t think they’ve lived enough and enjoyed their own life, embarrassing though, not a chance

RedWelliesAreHot · 02/02/2021 13:49

@ParkheadParadise It isn't that unusual for men to have 2nd families in their late 40s or even 50s, especially among the professional types.

DP has a colleague with grown up children from his 1st marriage and has 2 other children now, which he had when he was early 50s when he married again.

It's really quite common for men to have kids at 45-50 often as a 2nd marriage , with the women 10-15 years younger.

reformedcharacters · 02/02/2021 13:56

Yes RedWelliesAreHot my exH’s DC are to a much younger woman.

In reality his DGC is only 5 years younger than his youngest DC.

faerin · 02/02/2021 14:17

Apologies if this comes across as distasteful, but I can't help but think.. how long are you expecting him to live for? He's 100 years old. That is, by anyone's standards, absolutely incredible innings, and with such amazing accomplishment under his belt, he made so much of his time.

His potential for passing away soon obviously isn't exactly unimaginable, but perhaps it would help you to think more of all the good he did in the world while he was here. :)

randomer · 02/02/2021 14:25

I can't comprehend thisas I said politely on the other thread which disappeared. Were'nt we (as a nation) urged to stay put. Traveling to Barbados en famille may have just about scraped under the guidance but it certainly wasn't in the spirit of things.

He seems like a nice man, good luck to him, wouldn't wish him harm. But the media fixation fueled by a savvy family seems distasteful.
Don't we pay taxes to fund the NHS?

NorbertMeubles · 02/02/2021 14:39

Totally agree @randomer

TBF he's hardly alone in this, but yet again it's a case of folk being selfish b*stards until it's one who happens to be favoured

It's seen all the time, but that doesn't make it any less inconsistent

Belladonna123 · 02/02/2021 14:59

I don't believe for a minute that anyone, when offered the opportunity to go to Barbados with a loved one, knowing it would be the last holiday they ever had together, would turn it down. Bulls###. Say what you like, I don't believe it 🤷‍♀️

Thinking of you Sir Tom 🙏

randomer · 02/02/2021 15:00

But he is an absolute idol for many. His family saw $$$ and went for it.

An awful shame really. It just rather galling when others are suffering so much and quietly going about their lives.

User133847 · 02/02/2021 15:03

I'm sure he'll be fine and recover.

I'm clinging on to that.

The problem is, he lives with his family so would have had a lovely family Christmas wherever he was.

So many others have missed out on their last holiday, their last Christmas with loved ones and have died alone because of the pandemic. All this bullshit about him deserving the holiday because of his age etc is rubbish- so many people have deserved holidays or to spend time with others but they haven't.

User133847 · 02/02/2021 15:09

@NerrSnerr But Boris saved Christmas and kept the borders open. Tom took advantage of that.

randomer · 02/02/2021 15:09

Hundreds and thousands of people old, young, those in the middle would indeed turn down such a holiday. I have family abroad and I would not go as it did not feel right.Im sorry I cant quantify it more,it just didn't feel right

Whirlwind14 · 02/02/2021 15:10

Oh I love where these threads go...

Poor Captain Tom, very sad.

My DH is older than me- second marriage for him, he has teenagers/grown up kids and now we have a 3 yo and 1 yo. He’s 52. No one bats an eyelid.... totally acceptable and normal around Confused

If the borders are open thousands will go. If it's okay for all the influencers to go to Dubai.
Rightleftupdown · 02/02/2021 15:14

But it isn't though is it

User133847 · 02/02/2021 15:15

But it isn't though is it

Why were the borders open then?

Rightleftupdown · 02/02/2021 15:16

They shouldn't have been

NerrSnerr · 02/02/2021 15:17

If the borders are open thousands will go. If it's okay for all the influencers to go to Dubai.

It wasn't ok for the influencers to go to Dubai. Also very selfish.

Going on holiday as a 100 year old during a pandemic is always going carry a huge risk of needing to be hospitalised when there or when home again. Doesn't really fall into the whole 'protect the NHS' rhetoric.

Rightleftupdown · 02/02/2021 15:18

Can don't mean should

😂 I think he has more than paid his dues to fit with 'the NHS rhetoric'
