Thanks really interesting article.

They may have changed their mind on Ireland.

But what next they still pushed through a export ban meaning lots of companies will suffer and that phizer maybe forced break contracts because the eu have had a spat with AZ and dragged uk and Ireland into this sorry mess.

Things we know so far

They will raid vaccine factories
The get nasty publicly very quickly
They want to see confidential contracts and know other countries vaccine orders.
They may have approved AZ but Germany and macron undermined confidence .
Still not sure they paid in full.
I guess legal action take too long whats there next steps will they still insist some comes from uk factories or they block our phizer shipments.

Where does Israel, Canada and Australia stand on getting their deliveries if production and bottling and export is from Europe and they say Europe 1st.

Will this backfire on trade relations will big pharmaceutical maybe remove the risk.
If I was Johnson and Johnson and they making in Switzerland I wouldn't risk bottling it in Spain now as they did themselves no favour with that newsnight interveiw last night.
They all laid their cards on the table.
Oxford AZ can't magic up the doses they need very quickly .
It looks like phizer can increase productivity at Belgium plant however that won't meet Europe needs immediately short term either as they fulfilling orders for uk and other countries.

Can anyone forsee the next move by the EU.

Do we think BIDEN will pass comment as phizer is part American.

Its like a weird alternate universe this week.
With guardian writing favourable articles about British government.
Guardian being critical if the EU.
Remainers changing mind to leave
This has filled the madness that is trump and made our politicians look good for once.
I'm pleased and surprised how little Boris and Co have said.
Its United various fractions in Ireland.
The enemy is the virus it shouldn't be the EU sad its come to this.
Clearly we were first and we had better and very different contract.
Also as AZ clearly explained uk has same helium and production issues in the beginning.
Wonder when curevac will be ready.

The uk and Israel data will be massive help to let the world know how successful AZ and phizer will be its like one massive trial.
So many vaccine trays for many different vaccines took part in the UK.
The UK has contributed more to covax.
We offered other countries help with genome sequencing apparently around 50%world genome sequencing done within uk.
Its exiting in such shit financial Times that the amount scientific talent, research investment and manufacturing will be done here.
I admit we haven't done everything right far from it but we need to plough ahead and try and vaccinate everyone and help out when we can.

itsgettingweird · 30/01/2021 06:16

Hazelnut you can talk your your ds consultant as kids can have it off shelf. Like things like midazolam for epilepsy you have can unlicensed drugs.
My ds is 16 and underlying condition (neuro). He Probably can't have pfeizer as had unexplained allergic reaction as a kid and carried an epipen while they investigated. He has no allergies. AZ isn't licensed for under 18's. so I'm going to contact his consultant to discuss him having a vaccine not licensed for under 18's if he can't have Pfizer.

itsgettingweird · 30/01/2021 06:18

@OuiOuiKitty

What does the EU want to achieve from all this? ... What is their end goal?

To get the vaccines that they have paid for? How is that not obvious?

Well they'd be 2 -3 days ahead of that if they negotiated with AZ who they have contract with rather than trying to make this a EU U.K. thing. They've wasted time fighting a fight they weren't even having.

Interesting article.

It mentions that EU want UK to make making this a trade war.

Talk about twisting facts 180°

Ha, If the Guardian are criticising then you know they have majorly fucked up.

MRex · 30/01/2021 06:49

That Macron article in the Guardian is appalling. It's very irresponsible for them to put that up without a single word to highlight that he's extremely misinformed about the vaccine efficacy.

3asAbird · 30/01/2021 06:50

So what concerns me is eu orders a considerable amount phizer.
Will it stop phizer leaving Europe and let it sit there.
Or start using other countries phizer supplies to fulfil the order they placed with phizer which is not fast enough or fulfilled to compensate for the delay in az.
I know uk has az stocks but we also need our phizer.
The news of new vaccines are great but they not yet authorised or stock ready to go.
Think moderna next one in line that we ordered quite late and not a massive amount they said march we didn't kick off.
Phizer reduced what they could supply and we didn't kick off

If they took other countries supply of phizer and used within the eu
That would surely be theft and create bigger problems.
Right now their tactics is use blocking phizer as blackmail to hand over Oxford az supplies made in British factories.
Their goals wasent to fill their boots take and use all phizer made within the eu before phizer can fulfill other countries orders.
Oxford AZ offered them an immediate 8million so 4millioon more than they claim uk stole and they said thats not good enough.

I can see why others Countries are worried although I thought Australia supply was going to be made within Australia not Europe which was strength coffee AZ to have factories all over the world in every continent.
I guess long term once the AZ factories have produced enough to meet uk orders they will then start making orders for other countries and exporting cutting out Europe from the equation.
The eu factories will then only serve Europe's orders.

CrotchBurn · 30/01/2021 06:51

I think this has been an excellent week for Brexit. The EUs fuck up and temper tantruming is very good for the UKs economic and political reputation internationally. In fact I would actually welcome more posturing from the EU to worsen the situation, safe in the knowledge that the UK can get by with it's own manufacturing.

There's still something I dont understand that I would like to. Re germany buying more vaccines on the side for itself. I want to understand how that has been possible? What mechanisms are at play that have allowed it to do that, and most notably when asked about it, what explanation has Germany given the EU for this/how have they gotten away with it?

marbellamarc · 30/01/2021 06:51

Talk about twisting facts 180°

There's zero recognition of the fact it's because they were late! And all this talk of solidarity well where is their solidarity to the UK since our death toll is so high?

marbellamarc · 30/01/2021 06:55

Because they can do what they like because oddly not all countries are equal. They have tried to spin it that it's ok because it's extra after others have stuff but many countries would disagree.

Ihatefish · 30/01/2021 07:01

@lighteincastlewindow

Novavax is American, the UK 'gloating' is cringeworthy to watch. American company, developed in the US of A; who got a supply/production chain setup, the UK is a very minor part of that production chain. 1 billion doses to be distributed from the Czech Republic and about the same in India. So does the world have to wait until the Czech Republic completes vaccination of its own and Iikewise India. Propaganda is still rife and even more so now in the UK.
Was the bottle of gin you’ve just downed nice?

This i don't know and have tried to find out. I asked here why Hungary was able to order and approve Russian and Chinese vaccines without any repercussions and another poster made sensible suggestion because those 2 vaccines the euro group didn't attempt to buy but couldn't approach a company the EU had already done a deal with I guess conflict of interest. No idea how much German money invested in bio tech and cure vac. Another article I read suggested all countries after orders were made were entitled buy leftovers as top ups. Many countries didn't want to buy too much phizer as its expensive, new type of vaccine and expensive to store and transport. The extra 6th vial and special syringes now adds extra level difficulty with that one and they too have suffered reduced supplies so unsure despite Germany dubbed extras how much they have to vaccinate right now.

It does appear the 2 new contenders available later this year valneva and novavac they haven't concluded the deal so many countries orders maybe ahead of eu yet again.
Not sure when Johnson and Johnson available or if the eu has done definite deal with them.
Moderna have revised their delivery to Italy not sure if that also means wider eu as why single out Italy.
They have put America contract first and nothings been said by EU about selfish America.

www.ft.com/content/bb514eed-3be8-411a-b1c4-255dc569bae5

Will the European commission go after Moderna in same way they gone for AZ because they struggling with what seems like common issues of supply and manufacture of vaccines.
Or will they say phizer and moderna American companies we won't rock the boat.
The misfortune if AZ is its Anglo Irish partnership and they had deal done with UK first.

Your post really doesn’t make any sense.

Who's gloating? What propaganda? Most of us are just shocked that the EU has done a Trump & surprised when other posters just ignore this part. Just own your fuck up, it will be more productive to sort it if you do.

marbellamarc · 30/01/2021 07:11

A contract is a contract no matter when it was signed. It’s not first come first served! You still honour the contract.

By breaking other contracts?

Oh absolutely I see your logic. I will be using exactly the same strategy on my next supermarket shop. When I have an unavailable item, I will track down a neighbour who ordered the same item before me, kick down their front door match into their kitchen and take theirs! I will then build a massive wall so the fuckers can’t get any more deliveries

I mean why bother ringing the supermarket or getting a refund.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 30/01/2021 07:12

I don’t use the guardian even to wipe my arse these days but if it is remotely critical of the EU I will be highly amused.

marbellamarc · 30/01/2021 07:15

@Ihatefish I was just thinking this as my online shop will be here any minute & I have subs. Someone who get a delivery last week probably got my cinnamon bagels. They are mine! I want them back!

Ihatefish · 30/01/2021 07:25

I say the woman at number 42 has them. You had a contract with the supermarket for those bagels. If she won’t hand them over nicely steal her dog until she does. I love cinnamon bagels so when you get them back can you send me one please, I haven’t ordered any but was contemplating doing so next week so I might as well demand my share now😂.

marbellamarc · 30/01/2021 07:28

Yes & said lady at 42 better smile sweetly when she hands them over. As for you how dare you think you can behave like me, it's one rule for me not you!!!

CrotchBurn · 30/01/2021 07:38

I hope we can continue this "EU vaccine" monitoring thread as we are running out of pages! The Irish Times has no articles on this but definitely worth keeping an eye on today to see what their opinion columnists have to say.

I'm reading articles in Politico now. Is this an American platform? Also is it a reputable news source?

MRex · 30/01/2021 07:48

Politico is US/ German owned, Brussels based, very EU supporting in ethos.

Some Irish news sources for you @CrotchBurn:

PersonaNonGarter · 30/01/2021 07:49

There was a Politico journalist on Newsnight last night. She had ZERO knowledge of contract law and seemed to think that the publication of the AZ contract showed that the EU were entitled to UK doses. It was quite strange.

Ihatefish · 30/01/2021 07:51

@marbellamarc

Hey if you’re going to get all Teutonic on me, you keep your vaccine, along with the 50 other packs you’ve obtained under questionable circumstances and got in the freezer, they’re crap anyway, but I’m still going to demand the person at number 42 hands some directly to me, it’s in their best interests after all (although if they get a bit tetchy I might just give up and tell my family to eat cake instead).
CrotchBurn · 30/01/2021 07:51

@MRex

I'll read those articles now, thank you!

Interesting if politico is meant to be pro EU: www.politico.eu/article/eu-brandishes-export-ban-to-claim-dibs-on-vaccine-astrazeneca-pfizer/
