For all your vaccine news, treatment development stories and other positive things to make you feel there is hope for the future!
Good news only please!

Useful websites we are referring to a lot:

Government daily statistics

Worldometer for international case number comparisons

Covid Messenger for local authority figures, thanks to LittleOwl for all her hard work!

OurWorldInData international vaccination figures

Omnicalculator vaccine queue calculator NB Please don’t take this too seriously- it depends what vaccine delivery speed and uptake you estimate so it’s not written in stone.

Ah, the weekend lag. At least it is up on last weeks Monday figures. On Monday and Tuesday, I'm all about the rolling averages!

Furries · 25/01/2021 14:30

@FuzzyPuffling - Happy Birthday! Hope it’s as bright and sunny as it is where I am.

@1990s - I misread your sentence as “this thread is full of germs” 🤣

TeaInTheGarden · 25/01/2021 14:32

Surely he’s not going to ease anything before schools??
I would expect/hope the next step would be back to the same conditions as the November lockdown we had.
Please someone reassure me he’s not going to go back on yet another promise...?
“Last to close, first to open” was what they said....

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 25/01/2021 14:37

I would be surprised if he would open eg pubs but I would think there would be little things like being able to go for a walk with more than one person they could ease with minimal effect?

I don't think they'll do anything apart from easing outdoor restrictions. I think it would be a political disaster to not make the reopening of schools the first significant step back.

It was pretty snowy eg: in Surrey yesterday, so I think they advised not to go out if in doubt. It's a shame, because Surrey/South East/London had a bit of catching up to do.
FourTeaFallOut · 25/01/2021 15:03

It was the Saturday before too. We had a lot of snow up North and the Life centre was telling people it was ok to rearrange their appointment because the weather was so awful. Maybe we don't have a weekend lag problem, maybe we have a weekend snow problem. And it looks like my google weather app says we have snow again this weekend. Godammned January.

Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine Retains Neutralizing Activity Against Emerging Variants First Identified in the U.K. and the Republic of South Africa

investors.modernatx.com/news-releases/news-release-details/moderna-covid-19-vaccine-retains-neutralizing-activity-against/

So it looks like it’s just as effective against the uk strain, and less so against the SA version but does still offer some protection. And they have already started trials on a tweaked vaccine!

The Twitter guy @sailorooscout (?) says the Moderna vaccine is still in the region of 80% protective against the South Africa variant.

Also found it reassuring that they are advancing efforts for boosters should they be needed in future.

Here's a screenshot of the bit in his Twitter feed about this:-

80% sounds good to me. Not exactly oh no we are back to square one. The panic in the media is hopefully over. Won't hold my breath though.

chri55ie · 25/01/2021 15:38

I think if says one the ‘high 80% range at the very least’ so sounds good to me.

Happy birthday @FuzzyPuffling I hope the sun has been shining on you.

Actually he says the high 80%. Hope that's correct!

Happy birthday! Birthday 🥳 🎉🎁 @FuzzyPuffling !!!

tobee · 25/01/2021 15:42

Whoops that birthday message looks strange!

MadisonAvenue · 25/01/2021 15:47

Happy Birthday Fuzzy!! 🎂

We had a lot of snow here where I am in the West Midlands yesterday and the roads were terrible, still are. I know the vaccine centre was open because the local fire service were pictured on Facebook outside there after being vaccinated (which caused a bit of trouble because some admin staff from the fire station saw this and then posted saying that they work alongside them every day but haven’t been offered a vaccine or even told they’re eligible). I wonder if they were vaccinated due to a number of weather-related no shows though.

Anyway, that’s it in this area for the time being as they’ve used up all allocated vaccines for now so the centre is closed.

mrshonda · 25/01/2021 15:56

Happy birthday FuzzyPuffling

nex18 · 25/01/2021 16:01

I’m in the midlands in deep snow too, from the look of local Facebook groups the only place anyone went at the weekend was the vaccination centre.

tobee · 25/01/2021 16:01

Hey the @sailorooscout guy also gave an opinion on the Astra Zeneca vaccine and SA variant:-

tobee · 25/01/2021 16:02

Twitter peeps are asking him about Pfizer too but no reply as yet.
