For all your vaccine news, treatment development stories and other positive things to make you feel there is hope for the future!
Good news only please!

Useful websites we are referring to a lot:

Government daily statistics

Worldometer for international case number comparisons

Covid Messenger for local authority figures, thanks to LittleOwl for all her hard work!

OurWorldInData international vaccination figures

Omnicalculator vaccine queue calculator NB Please don’t take this too seriously- it depends what vaccine delivery speed and uptake you estimate so it’s not written in stone.

@louisejxxx they have done that where I live for those that live within a particular area. A message went on Facebook for anyone over a certain age (I think it was 75) to book get in contact if they hadn't heard. So I guess it's locally managed rather than a big national call (at least now)

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 30/01/2021 10:21

I booked my dad's vaccine through that link yesterday.

He's both over 70 and CEV so I'm really pleased 😊

HalfDutchGirl · 30/01/2021 10:43

In case it's of help to anyone with relatives still waiting for their call for a vaccine, when I was checking in people at our vaccine hub yesterday quite a few were saying they had booked their jab directly through the pharmacy which is managing the hub.

So, if there is someone managing the hub near your relatives it may be worth giving them a call. HTH.

Aargh, I’m really conflicted. I’m in north Essex where vaccine rollout seems to have been quite slow (saw headline on local paper yesterday raising this issue).

My mum is 73 and diabetic, hasn’t had a letter yet. She has other health problems too, but not any on the list for being ECV. She doesn’t drive and can’t walk far, so has basically been shielding since about 2 weeks before first lockdown. I go over to keep her company, have taken her on drives to get out of the house etc.

I’ve just tried the link posted above and expected to get chucked out and told “computer says no”. Was a bit shocked that it offered a couple of appointments in a week’s time!

I’ve come out of the system for now, as am concerned on 2 fronts. Firstly, I don’t want to take an appointment away from someone who is older/more vulnerable. Secondly, as she hasn’t had a letter (or any other communication), I’m worried that she won’t have any “proof” that she’s eligible and so may get turned away or “told off” at the appointment and I know that that would really upset her.

Can anyone reassure me that they, or a relative, has been in the same situation and that it’s ok!

nex18 · 30/01/2021 10:55

I’ve just booked my stepmom’s that way. I tried a few days ago and it said not eligible but allowed me to book yesterday. I presume she’s been added to the list but the letter hasn’t arrived. Possibly because the postman is hiding from her stalking him!

It’s fine, her letter may have already been generated but the post is really slow in some areas at the moment. Take the appointments offered, it’s actually better for people to take them this way as it allows the go surgeries to focus on those who can’t get to the vaccine hubs.
Mousehole10 · 30/01/2021 10:59

Also the booking system won’t let you book if you aren’t eligible, I tried it with my details just to see and it said no. So she is definitely eligible if it’s offered appointments

Mindymomo · 30/01/2021 11:03

@Furries. Yes definitely book it, it would not have offered it if your Mum wasn’t eligible. We are in Surrey and are vaccinating over 70’s now.

InterfectoremVulpes · 30/01/2021 11:25

Ferries, its absolutely fine. Its the approval on the system that triggers the letter being produced. If it lets you book then you are 100% totally and utterly eligible for the vaccine.

Ilookatthefloor can you try to book for them just to see if they are eligible? I had to do that for my mum and send her a screenshot of the screen showing appointments before she would believe me 😄

InterfectoremVulpes · 30/01/2021 11:26

Put it this way. There are vaccine hubs with vaccines waiting for people to jab, if you don't book an appointment it could mean that vaccines aren't getting used in time!

InterfectoremVulpes · 30/01/2021 11:33

And, to be brutally honest, the sooner they get the top 4 groups done, the sooner can start on the other groups and release some restrictions Grin

WanderingFruitWonderer · 30/01/2021 11:36

I just heard yesterday that my CEV 79-year-old dad is getting his first vaccine next Tuesday. Such good news, and so relieved. I haven't seen my parents for over a year, as they've been shielding, and I live quite far away from them. My dad has severe emphysema, and is immuno-compromised, so a visit would have been too risky. I've been clinging to hope, but it's now starting to feel real.
My mum hasn't heard about her vaccine yet, but she's only 72, and nothing like as vulnerable to Covid as my dad. So it was expected he'd have his first.
Anyway, just sending love and hope to those who've also been waiting for vaccine news for vulnerable relatives. I know the feeling. I hope you/they won't be waiting long.
It's all happening now, and is good news indeed Smile

Can Scotland use this link?

I booked my MIL's jab from that link on Tuesday. She's in Colchester and on Monday "computer said no" but Tuesday it said yes. If it works then the letter has been generated, go ahead and book, you're not jumping the queue, it's just the post is so delayed right now that it could be weeks before you get the letter. *she had the jab yesterday and it was a really quick and simple process
Furries · 30/01/2021 12:00

Brilliant, thank you all. Your posts have definitely reassured me, so am going to call mum first to let her know that I can book her in.

Once again, I blooming love this thread!

HairyFloppins · 30/01/2021 12:15

BBCONEANDTWO the link didn't work for my MIL in Scotland. Just England only I think.

LetItGoGo · 30/01/2021 12:34

Yes not relevant in Scotland.

Not sure about Wales?

AVictoryProduct · 30/01/2021 12:37

It worked for my dad, 73. He doesn't need to take a letter, just the booking number that is generated when you book.

I am now trying to convince my 70 year old mum that she wouldn't be jumping the queue.

Frazzled2207 · 30/01/2021 12:52

@LetItGoGo
No in Wales you have to be registered by an English gp.

BBCONEANDTWO · 30/01/2021 13:29

Thanks regarding the info in Scotland my PIL's both over 80 not had it yet so I thought I could have tried to book them on. Never mind it'll come soon now.

mrshonda · 30/01/2021 13:31

Is anyone doing thread number 8? We're getting perilously close to 1k posts!

BBCONEANDTWO · 30/01/2021 13:37

I tried to do it but couldn't get the links to work and also didn't know how to tie it back to this thread - sorry

BBCONEANDTWO · 30/01/2021 13:37

I'll have another go

BBCONEANDTWO · 30/01/2021 13:43

I've done it but called it thread 7 instead of 8 - I've asked admin to change it sorry

Spoke to dm and she won’t go to a big centre, so she’s going to wait for the GP letter (the online booking is just for the mass hubs isn’t it ?) She also can’t get there without me driving her, so would prefer she went somewhere walkable, even though there is absolutely no way I can have covid! Hope won’t be long for my folks now.
