Endless Propaganda

Bewareoftheblob · 23/01/2021 17:36

I cannot believe the endless Covid propaganda on the news channels at the moment. There doesn't seem to be any challenge to the stay at home/don't kill Gran/crying nurses narrative at all.

I am pretty disgusted by the emotional manipulation and attempts at behaviour modification going on.

Or am I being unreasonable...

@echt

Sorry. that didn't make sense. Thought I could add to a message.

Agree with moomin and Bewareoftheblob.

A bunch of trolls all nattering to each other.

Grin I'm the OP. My point was that I haven't created sock puppets, or convinced a load of my mates to rock up and pretend to agree with me.

This is what people think. Just because you don't agree doesn't make other posters trolls.

Why are people so terrified of slogans and news clips? Just need to look into the data behind the sound bites a bit more and get a clearer picture, that's all it takes. A quick google is usually enough.

GetOffYourHighHorse · 23/01/2021 21:40

'Every day 24 000 people die of hunger across the world. But they're black kids, right? So they don't really count. Old white people?? Stop the world.'

What? I think you'll find Black and Asian people are disproportionately affected but you're maybe like the rest of the cheerleading deniers and don't watch the news or listen to the radio? Dowser proudly admitted it upthread, no wonder they are so embarrassingly ill informed.

@moominmomma1234 absolutely agree.

clopper · 23/01/2021 21:42

Agree with OP completely. It is like we are being told off continuously yet most are sat at home or going to work or buying shopping acting perfectly legally. I think it is becoming background noise / wallpaper now and counterproductive. Like a previous OP I don't believe that it is all a conspiracy but i do like to hear other points of view.

Not terrified. Irritated.

What is the alternative?

I work for the NHS.
We are ALREADY overwhelmed
I'm being redeployed to ITU next week. I'm a radiographer/sonographer.

This is the worst thing I have ever worked through and I've seen some pretty horrific stuff.
The older people die yes. But the ones on itu aren't 80/90 years old.
They're 30/40/50/60.

They absolutely would not survive without the medical intervention.
This would be worse without these measures.

And it's what I think.

I have no problem with your views. I'm not the one calling people trolls or morons like some on this thread.

I don't know OP. I'd like to say YANBU but I believe the news and it's got me scared. It's the Kent variant that seems to have made the situation so much worse. It's being picked up in France, Germany and rest of the EU now. Germany are locking down hard with no end in sight. Not sure about France, the Netherlands ect.

Backbee · 23/01/2021 21:53

How about instead of shitty adverts that have zero actual affect, the government puts an effective test and trace system into place, funds childcare providers so that they can remain open just for those who need it (as a parent I am not paying £1k+ a month to keep my child at home to be honest, reimburse the funds and make it so that employers know you don't have a choice to have them home and then fab), during the lull in the summer actually put workable plans and support in place for hospitals and healthcare staff (who are all amazing and have been completely shafted), support those who have fallen through the cracks of furlough etc and are facing falling into poverty, ensure all school children have access to laptops and wifi- there has been nearly a year to prep for this time, and try and figure something workable and clear out re: supporting those who are vulnerable, rather than confusing af bubbles that keep changing, and everyone knew MH was going to explode yet services have shrunk if anything. They should have tightened the borders sooner, and learnt lessons from the first wave, yet here we are again. Vaccinations seem to be going well so far, but they will only help us out of this alongside other measures.

TLDR: the posters are crap, the government needs to pull it's finger out of its arse.

MissEspresso · 23/01/2021 21:55

I visited a friend today (on the doorstep), to offer my condolences after her dad died last week from covid.
She is devastated that they lost him in this way - unable to visit him when he was conscious and then only two of the family could visit to say goodbye when he was on a ventilator.
She is also wracked with guilt for spending Christmas Day with him, before they all developed symptoms and tested positive days later.
I think the government were giving the wrong message before, that schools were safe, people could get together for a family Christmas etc and people thought things were ok. The case and death rates show that things are in fact dire.

TaraRhu · 23/01/2021 21:59

Right.. so you'd support the hospitals being totally over run and say 'f@ck' the over 80s/ vulnerable/ key workers ? Much more important that you have the right to do exactly what you want???

The reason there is propaganda is that over 1000 people are dying a day. This fits worse and there will be no health service left for the rest of us that need Enough cancer ops have been cancelled already. I'm 6 months pregnant. I need the nhs but not as much as millions of others with serious health conditions that can't access services. Your attitude is appalling.

Yes lockdown is HARD but so is death by covid. Most people are coping and sadly for society's most lonely this is't much different from usual,

Yabvu, selfish and short sighted.

I said that I don't like the attempt at manipulation on the news channels.

But we're not even allowed to question the narrative, are we? If we do then our attitudes are 'appalling... selfish and short sighted', and we are pretty much murderers.

WalrusWife · 23/01/2021 22:06

TaraRhu - why did you get pregnant in the middle of a pandemic then?

I think the current propaganda is all about distraction from the fact that the government have made some really, really bad decisions. They were advised to lockdown sooner but ignored it as they were fixated on 'Boris Saves Christmas' which has led us into the current situation. Better to have the public turn on each other for walking in the park than turn in Boris for being worst most incompetent PM ever.
WiseUpJanetWeiss · 23/01/2021 22:07

Codswallop.

There are plenty of counties without health services which have decent economies. They may not be that equal, for sure, but the economy functions.

Economy first, health second. Coronavirus has killed an additional 0.1pct (vs the usual 1pct) of the UK population over the past year. Mostly old. A pandemic with that impact does not destroy an economy like the Black Death did (30-50pct of the entire population).

Presume you mean countries? Poor health = poor economy. Do you not know the history of the NHS?

TaraRhu · 23/01/2021 22:09

@WalrusWife contraceptive failure. It happens.

But we're not even allowed to question the narrative, are we?

What is the narrative you are questioning ? You feel media is being manipulative, but for what end ?

WalrusWife · 23/01/2021 22:12

TaraRhu - would you be happy to sacrifice your maternity care as people are dying from Covid? You note that millions need the NHS more than you. Perhaps we should cancel NHS maternity services and leave women to fend for themselves as only Covid matters.

I think the government is driving the message, clearly, because they are scared of being blamed for the virus. So it's important to make sure that the blame is firmly on the general population. Hence the heavy-handed bullshit on replay.

My point was that you can't even question anything without being called stupid, conspiracy theorist, anti-vaxxer, moron. Total shutdown of any kind of discussion. It's pathetic.

We have been in a pandemic since March last year and you decide to get pregnant and need the resources of the NHS, yet you’re calling out others for being selfish and shortsighted. Interesting...
TaraRhu · 23/01/2021 22:22

@Bewareoftheblob

It is very simple.... aside from a vaccine there is no way of stopping this virus. Lockdowns slow the spread and takes the heat off but as soon as you loosen them it speeds up again - especially with the new variant. We can't train new health workers overnight so we need to protect the resources we have.

The guidelines are not perfect and yes there are bits that probably don't stack up. Plus the government has failed to act decisively or quickly enough. I don't think anyone doesn't question the details of the guidelines or some of the decisions made. But essentially the only way out of this is lockdown and a vaccine and that's the message we need to promote. Unless you know something the rest of the world is missing ....

I think you've hit the nail on the head there.

I'm angry about the total incompetence shown by this government but what makes me even more angry is the way they're now trying to turn this into a failing of the public. Reading threads like this and seeing everyone finger pointing and calling each other morons really saddens me. It doesn't have to be like this.
