@Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum - this is why I wish MN had a blooming ‘like” button!

I go on other threads and wish mumsnet had a bang my head against a wall button 😁

@Northernbeachbum

I love this thread and its keeping me sane - can I request a positive opinion on Hancock saying the vaccine may be up to 50% less effective on the SA variant? Are they trying to keep people behaving?
Patrick Vallance got asked about that in the press briefing yesterday and basically said we just don’t know yet, we need to wait for more evidence. So it’s certainly not yet definitely the case.

That made me ugly snort with laughter! It’s taken me 10 months, but am just now realising that there’s almost no point getting annoyed by them/trying to post another view.

My Nan died quite a long time ago. But she made me laugh loads. Her favourite topic of conversation was the tv - “the scenes are too dark can’t see what’s happening, why aren’t they showing the snooker, why are they all mumbling instead of speaking clearly “. So for Christmas one year, one of her gifts was a large rubber brick for her to Chuck in the general direction of the tv when she was annoyed.

I sometimes think I need to go online to buy a brick of my own 😂
@tobee I have tried scrolling down on John Campbell videos on my phone 😳😆
I do that too 😂

I read quite a few articles about this overnight. I was much more reassured than I thought I'd be.

The samples so far have been quite small, there were differences between the effect that the South Africa variant would have on convalescent plasma, possibilities of reinfection and the current vaccines.

I read a pre print that some expert scientists had commented on and all their comments were reassuring.

tobee · 23/01/2021 07:43

To add the commenting scientists seemed "on it" iyswim

😂. Not as funny as my Nan. She was SO proper in so many ways, but the tv schedule/filming etc was her complete and utter bugbear. She blooming loved that rubber brick🤣

I dread to think what she’d be saying if she was here today. Probably a mixture of “stop buggering about and stay at home, but come round and see me if you think you’re safe. Stay at home, do you know what your grandfather went through in the war - but come round if you think it’s safe”.

If we had turned up, deeming it “safe” she’d probably have lobbed said brick if we’d a) brought the wrong biscuits and b) mentioned that we shouldn’t really be there as she was at risk.

The more I type, the more I’m deciding I’m going to order a brick!

FourTeaFallOut · 23/01/2021 07:51

Omg Tobee that is a lovely graph by Eran Segal you posted in the middle of the night. Watching the rates of the vaccinated sink is such a tonic. Roll on March.

FourTeaFallOut · 23/01/2021 07:52

When hospitalisations will be down (for the benefit of anyone who feels compelled to drop in to tell me the virus will still be here Grin)

tootyfruitypickle · 23/01/2021 07:54

Hopefully by the time the other variants hit here, our rates will be low, levels of vaccination will be high, so their impact will be limited?

MarcelineMissouri · 23/01/2021 08:05

More positive sounding news on an antibody treatment to prevent infection

@tobee thanks for posting that. Do you have any good links on that?

thatgingergirl · 23/01/2021 08:13

Foam ones available on eBay I see Furries! You have lovely memories of your nan!

Northernbeachbum · 23/01/2021 08:15

@tobee thank you - I generally don't worry too much anymore as I know that we never eradicate disease but get better at treatment etc but I have possibly been getting my hopes up too much for life being a bit more normal too soon

“Professor Robert Dingwall, who sits on the New and Emerging Respiratory Virus Threats Advisory Group, told Reaction:

“The 30 per cent more lethal claim about the virus rests on a very fragile and uncertain base of evidence. NERVTAG has expressed limited confidence in this figure, which should not be the basis for public alarm.”

He continued: “It is right not to hide possibly bad news but it is also quite wrong to exploit it to increase public fear and to try to shut down debates about the exit strategy from the current restrictions.”

“If, as seems likely, the vaccines are as effective against the Kent variant as the previous one, then any increase in risk, which is not proven, is only a temporary problem that will disappear as the vaccine programme rolls onward.” ”

FuzzyPuffling · 23/01/2021 08:33

Proper job news today ( I had a zoom church meeting last night which is how I found this out) .It seems all the over 80s in our village are getting "done" today. There'll be a mass exodus to the town with a Waitrose.

I so want my (in his 50s) CEV husband to be done.

FuzzyPuffling · 23/01/2021 08:38

I love those quotes from Professor Dingwall. They are very grounded, reassuring and sensible. And not a jot of hysteria.

I’m I do feel some of what he warns against is happening in briefings atm.

Not Vallance or Whitty’s fault - I like Vallance a lot actually he is calm and considered. And Whitty too obvs

But I do think behavioural impact is part of early release with so many caveats

thatgingergirl · 23/01/2021 08:45

It's good that you know things are actually happening now Fuzzy. Everyone "done" today moves your DH further towards his own date. Keep on keeping on!
Thanks for posting that Msloverlover - clear, straight talking there!

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 23/01/2021 08:47

Excellent news FuzzyPuffling.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 23/01/2021 08:57

Yippee Fuzzy that’s very good news.

Similar happened last Sunday here. Seems like all the over 80’s in the village went to the vaccination hub on the same day. They must have worked through the gp practice list.

Waitrose will be busy. That particular waitrose holds special memories for me as it’s the first place my DC walked in public without the buggy. Silly memory I know, but I only nipped in got a few things leaving DC and DH in the car. But they decided to join me and suddenly round the corner came a wobbly little toddler DC so excited to find me.

MarcelineMissouri · 23/01/2021 09:01

@Blerg it’s from this guy Eran Segal, an Israeli scientist.
