How many miles away from your home would you class as local?

As there are debates about what classes as local.

I would say maybe 7-10 miles away

Mrsmummy90 · 11/01/2021 18:39

Local to me would be within 5 miles

tellthem · 11/01/2021 18:40

within walking distance

HesterShaw1 · 11/01/2021 18:40

I would say my whole district - about 15 miles in either direction.

And when I am staying with DP, the same. He lives 14 miles away.

We both live semi rurally.

PusheenLove · 11/01/2021 18:40

Fyi there is no legal obligation to stay local for exercise

Tenyearsgone · 11/01/2021 18:41

Within 5 miles.

Avondklok · 11/01/2021 18:41

Certainly under 5 miles. It depends if rural or urban.

2typesofjungle · 11/01/2021 18:41

My nearest shop is 15 miles each way, so my local area would be anywhere within 20 miles.

Jobsharenightmare · 11/01/2021 18:41

My village or the next town. 5 miles if you live in a normal town is plenty.

tellthem · 11/01/2021 18:43

@PusheenLove why do you feel the need to point out a loophole rather than just trying to get out of this shitty situation and sticking to guidance

MoirasRoses · 11/01/2021 18:43

Depends how far you normally walk. My hiking neighbours are still doing a good 20 mile round trip up on the moors each weekend! I wish I was as fit as them and they are twice my age 🙈

CarryOnFestiveNamechanging · 11/01/2021 18:44

5-10 miles

Nearest supermarket is 5 miles away.

Nearest hospital 10 miles

Lancelottie · 11/01/2021 18:44

Around 10 would get us to a supermarket in either direction.

But then 17 miles was considered local enough for my son to go to school, and some of my daughter’s school friends travelled over 50 miles to sixth form, so our ideas may be skewed.

We aren’t planning to travel that far for exercise though.

HedgieHog · 11/01/2021 18:45

Under 5 and I’m in a village

SimonJT · 11/01/2021 18:45

It depends where people live.

I did a 25 mile cycle at the weekend, thinking about my route I think the furthest I was from home was about 11 miles.

Fun6665 · 11/01/2021 18:45

I would say as close as my nearest supermarket and gp so a mile.

KylieKoKo · 11/01/2021 18:45

It depends. I went on a short bike ride in my lunch break and was surprised it ended up being 15 miles. On a bike local can be quite far!

Enb76 · 11/01/2021 18:46

Walking distance. So around 10k.

Scarby9 · 11/01/2021 18:46

For me, about a 7 mile radius. That takes me to my nearest town where friends live and all local services are. Not to work which is about 40 miles away, however.

For my parents it's about a 15 mile radius. They are more rural.

EskSmith · 11/01/2021 18:46

My nearest big supermarket is 10 miles. As it is where I do my regular shop I class it as local. O stopped shopping there for the 2 weeks when we were in tier 2 and the supermarket was in tier 4 but that meant a 15mile journey in the other direction.

It is massively different depending on where you live, which is why we can't have blanket rules, if you locked me down to a 5 mile radius I wouldn't have a supermarket... Lots of people could easily manage with a 2 mile radius.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 11/01/2021 18:50

For exercise, walking distance. Exercise can be done in the home, doesn’t need a drive to get to it nor be close to shops.

For supermarket or hospital then much further to nearest one.

WorriedMillie · 11/01/2021 18:52

I’d say 5 miles off the top of my head, but our local supermarket is in the next town, 3 miles away, so that’s as far as I’m travelling
We live on the edge of a country park though, so no need to travel for exercise

HedgieHog · 11/01/2021 18:52

What @IceCreamAndCandyfloss says, no need to be driving anywhere to exercise/ have a drive out for a change of scenery

AliceLutherNeeMorgan · 11/01/2021 18:52

The government have made a big thing about “no one will have to travel more than 10 miles to get a vaccine” so I think that they think 10 miles is the extent of “local”.

But obviously it depends on rural or urban, because it’s to do with amenities, isn’t it?

FraterculaArctica · 11/01/2021 18:53

A mile.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 11/01/2021 18:53

@KylieKoKo

It depends. I went on a short bike ride in my lunch break and was surprised it ended up being 15 miles. On a bike local can be quite far!
This. People seem to think you can only walk for exercise. If I'm getting my bike out I'm going further than if I'm walking!
