How many miles away from your home would you class as local?

As there are debates about what classes as local.

I would say maybe 7-10 miles away

Ten miles for us as it's the distance to our local town for all necessities.

If in regards to exercise than out of my front door is fine for me personally as we back onto fields and walks.

Redglitter · 11/01/2021 23:02

2/3 miles

@SnowFields

If you are in England, local is determined by staying in your village, town or part of city. It’s not to do with distance in miles.
Except that makes NO sense. I can walk around my village and see lots of people, or I can go the other way, out of my village and walk fir miles without seeing anyone.

I can drive to the lake to walk around it and not see hardly anyone (and be able to SD with anyone there) or o can walk to the Lake down narrow roads with lots of people.

Fortunately I'm able to use my common sense to stay as safe as I possibly can. At the moment I'm staying at home. Not going out at all. Biggest adventure this week...putting the kitchen bin bag into the outside bin. Rock'n Roll.

Walking distance for average person, so 5 miles either way (10 mile round trip)

Buzzinwithbez · 11/01/2021 23:10

14 takes me to my nearest river that I've been using since August for the sport that I took up when my mental health was really suffering and has stopped me from thinking about crashing my car.

Local for the purpose of exercise is the minimum distance it takes to get to somewhere where you can do exercise. So for me, it's the park that is 10 minutes walk from my front door via a leafy Avenue of posh houses I will never afford to live in. If I lived in a rough area and all the places within an easy walk were unsuitable/dangerous then it might be the case that a 10 minute drive to somewhere more appropriate then that would be fine. Or if I lived half way up a mountain and there was only steep terrain near the house and I had to drive down to a valley to get to flat land I could run on maybe? But it should be the shortest reasonable distance to a place where one can get exercise. Driving for 10 minutes when one could get a similar level of exercise closer to home us an unnecessary journey and fancying a change of scene isn't a good reason.

At least 10 miles, work is 11 miles. Have to travel 5 miles to supermarket.
5 miles to park! Once leave tiny village their are no paths, just national speed limit roads. I’m not walking in local woods on my own, it’s not safe.

Watchingbehindmyhands · 11/01/2021 23:29

Depends where you live, I think. Nearest working cash point? Post Office? Supermarket? Petrol station? Green space? Will be different for those living rurally compared with those in city centres.

MajesticWhine · 11/01/2021 23:31

For me it's 1 or 2 miles, because I live in a city, but rurally it makes sense that it is a much wider area. I think of it as the area I can buy food, go to the park, cafe, chemist, doctor; hairdresser and vet. All within about a mile for me.

LilyPond2 · 11/01/2021 23:31

As others have said, I think "local" very much depends on context, eg I wouldn't consider a supermarket 5 miles away to be my local supermarket because there are plenty nearer. But if my son went on a bike ride and only rode 5 miles from home, I certainly wouldn't consider that he had breached guidance on staying local.

MiddleClassMother · 11/01/2021 23:41

It depends, for me local could be a 20 mile drive, whereas in London a few miles and you're in a different area completely. Saying that, you're much more likely to catch it in an urban area so you should stay local.
