How many miles away from your home would you class as local?

As there are debates about what classes as local.

I would say maybe 7-10 miles away

Where you can walk within half an hour or so. For example, you run out of milk. You need to get some. Do you walk/drive to the local shop (Tesco Express, corner shop, larger supermarket even) which is say a couple of miles if that, or do you drive 10 miles (because you feel like getting a Costa and meeting your Pal for a chat). Disclaimer: I’m not including the millions of people who seem to live rurally on MN).

PusheenLove · 11/01/2021 21:15
@PusheenLove why do you feel the need to point out a loophole rather than just trying to get out of this shitty situation and sticking to guidance
It's not a loophole. That implies it's there by error.

cjpark · 11/01/2021 21:18

Anywhere that I can walk or cycle to from home.

Sexnotgender · 11/01/2021 21:19

A mile or two. Walking distance.

Apparently our council have decided that their newly recruited "covid marshals" are going to go round asking people in the local green spaces if they are "local" ad if not, tell them to bugger off.

Problems - they aren't police so what right do they even have to ask who you are and where you're from? We don't have to carry ID. What does local mean? There's no legal requirement to stay local, it's just guidance. And where we live isn't a hotspot for visitors, people from my town are more likely to be heading for the coast and beaches so it's more likely to be the other way round!

puffinkoala · 11/01/2021 21:23

@heLacksnotluster

As far as you, as an individual, can walk or cycle, return.
Well for some people that will be 500m and for others it will be 40 miles.
RedRiverShore1 · 11/01/2021 21:23

5-10 miles, so walkable

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 11/01/2021 21:25

Local = 3 miles walking distance from my house + the nearest decent-sized supermarket.

RedRiverShore1 · 11/01/2021 21:25

If it was DH's walkable it would be about 40 miles but that is a bit extreme

ScribblingPixie · 11/01/2021 21:28

Anywhere in the city plus into the countryside a little bit.

cyclingmad · 11/01/2021 21:33

In March Post lockdown I was easily doing 30 miles on my bike and as weather improves I'll be doing it again

MrsVogon · 11/01/2021 21:34

Within a few miles.

PurpleDaisies · 11/01/2021 21:37

Round here, 10-15 minutes drive. Rural village.

MotherExtraordinaire · 11/01/2021 21:37

I think that it depends on how rurally you live.

Within cities and towns, I think that it's fair to assume that local is within 3 to 5 miles max.

Rurally it's more difficult. I'd still say 5 miles, however, it's harder as for example for us, the nearest supermarket is over 20 miles away. And if I was still visiting a supermarket I'd probably think that it wouldn't be unreasonable to take exercise in that area before the shop.

JaninaDuszejko · 11/01/2021 21:42

I live 3 miles from a beach. We don’t go often but it would be ridiculous to say I couldn’t drive there surely?

That's exactly what the situation was in Scotland during the first lockdown. People on islands with no cases weren't allowed to drive to a beach that is considered 'crowded' if there's another family in sight. It's daft, being outside with your immediate family for a cycle or a run or a walk or even a picnic is not going to cause the virus to spread. Mixing with other households indoors does. Maybe they should stop us all going to the supermarket?

Thislittlefinger123 · 11/01/2021 21:50

10 miles? I'm planning to take DC in the car to other places for fresh air than the handful of walks nearby. So anywhere easy driving distance I guess. This could go on for weeks, they've already sacrificed enough to the collective effort over the last year, so I'll be taking them wherever suits us for a change of scene (all outdoors, never within 2 metres of anyone is we can help it).

amicissimma · 11/01/2021 22:07

The government seem to be aiming to have a vaccinating facility within 10 miles of everyone, so presumably they think 10 miles is within one's local area.

LickEmbysmiling · 11/01/2021 22:09

Not rural, 5 to 6 ish miles.

JM10 · 11/01/2021 22:26

So many people on this thread have said for exercise it must start and end at your door, but that is not what the guidance says. It specifically says you can travel to get somewhere for exercise. As several people have said, a 10-20 minute drive can often mean a walk where you don't see another person, let alone come into contact with them. A walk from your door can bring you into contact with loads more people. Walking in pavements there is less space to distance from people too.

It does in Wales

Yes absolutely, or exercise more safely. There are a lot of country lanes around here that you wouldn’t want to run along. A quick drive earlier took me to a bridleway where I saw nobody and didn’t risk getting run over.

DdraigGoch · 11/01/2021 22:35

The "stay local" rule is aimed at the piss-takers driving 50+ miles to a national park. I'd say that 15 miles radius was reasonable, starting and ending one's journey at home.

Honeyroar · 11/01/2021 22:35

Depends what you’re referring to. For local area I’d say within walking distance, really within three or four miles. I’m fairly rural, so my local supermarket is slightly out of my local area, as is my local petrol station and hospital etc.

Yes and for us that will be 22 miles!
