How many miles away from your home would you class as local?

As there are debates about what classes as local.

I would say maybe 7-10 miles away

Personally i think the idea is that you can walk/run/cycle as far as you like as long as you start from your house and end back at your house its the driving to anywhere that is the issue. If your lucky enough to live near beaches, woods, fields, mountains then you will obviously be able to enjoy them if you dont then you have to make do with walking around the streets.

notalwaysalondoner · 11/01/2021 18:57

I'd say 10-15 miles. I live semi-rurally so used to driving further for necessities. I think it's more about the journey time and risk though - 15 miles in central London at rush hour you'd be driving for hours, or if you're driving 15 miles in the snow the risk of an accident is high. Normal day-to-day safe driving activities I think people need to wind their neck in unless and until the government make an explicit statement.

cyclingmad · 11/01/2021 18:57

I just use what the government does for tiers. So if they say London is now tier 4 thats my local area then, because restrictions and moving tiers is classified that way.

MummaBear4321 · 11/01/2021 18:59

Urban, 5 miles. Rural, 10 miles.

IHateThisVirus · 11/01/2021 19:00

We'll clearly less than 5 for us plebs who want a walk with a coffee, and 7 for the PM and bike.

Always one rule for one, and another for the elite ...

ChalkDinosaur · 11/01/2021 19:04

Honestly, no idea... Walking distance? 2 miles? 5? 10? No more than that. But the government really need to make their interpretation of 'local' clear if the police are going to be issuing fines based on it.

kowari · 11/01/2021 19:05

I'd say 15 miles. My grandmother is 11 miles away and that's only a 20 to 25 minute drive.

DrunkenKoala · 11/01/2021 19:06

I live in a built up area with all amenities (supermarket, post office, chemist, large park with play area, children’s schools, swimming pool) within 5 miles of me. But in normal times would happily travel 10-15 miles to go to large shopping centre or a large country park but would expect to be there for a few hours.

Tazers · 11/01/2021 19:06

7 miles. Boris was spotted exercising at Olympic Park today. 7 miles away from no 10.

Can't get the link to work but it's the main story on MailOnline.

LegoAndLolDolls · 11/01/2021 19:08

If its walking distance only I'm going to live off the woods. My nearest shop is five away. My Tesco is ten for click and collect.

I can exercise guilt free but food? We all need to eat

MargeryMcLatchie · 11/01/2021 19:10

I live in London and there is everything I need within about three miles.

pourmeanotherglass · 11/01/2021 19:13

For exercise, i would start from home, but may walk 5 miles or so, or cycle up to 20 miles (10 each way).

Didyousaynutella · 11/01/2021 19:13

I would say it doesn’t matter as long as you don’t go out of county, or next county if you border it. If I go for walk in my village I bump into a million people I know, my kids bump into their friends and want to play with them. If I go further afield it’s easier to keep to ourselves. So I will just use a bit of common sense. If I want to go to a popular spot I will do it mid week or very early morning, when there are less people about.

MargeryMcLatchie · 11/01/2021 19:14

I am not a fan on the PM but a cycle ride 7 miles from home does not seem unreasonable to me. That would only be half an hour from home - so then half an hour back; cycling for an hour, what's the big deal? How would it improve matters if he had cycled round and round his immediate block for an hour? He no more or less likely to come to harm whether he's one mile from home or seven.

OrangeBananaFish · 11/01/2021 19:14

My local supermarkets are between 10-15 miles depending which one I go to. I do have a very small shop in my village that is a few yards away, but its more of a loaf of bread, pint of milk or pack of toilet rolls type of place. Certainly couldn't do a weekly shop there.

I live rurally and have many regular running routes that start and end at my front door. However, if I lived in a town or city I'd probably think up to a 30 min drive or so?????

I did see something on FB (so it must be true) about a couple from Rochdale walking up one of the Yorkshire peaks at the weekend. That I would say is not local.

I wouldn't necessarily use county lines as locality either. I live less than 1.5 miles from the next county and that is easily a nice walk or a short run away.

Megan2018 · 11/01/2021 19:15

We’re rural and it’s nearly 10 miles to a supermarket, cash point, petrol station etc. i class our area as far as our nearest town.

If it was a city I’d think 5 miles perhaps?

My work is 20 miles and I don’t class that as local.

40somethingJBJ · 11/01/2021 19:15

I’m in a village in Derbyshire and people have been fined for going to the country park in the next village, less than 2 miles away, so I’m not quite sure what classes as local anymore! All I do know is that, as a mobility scooter user, I’m really limited on accessible dog walking places at the minute, without driving somewhere, as most of the paths round me are either closed or you have to climb over a stile to get on them!

Absolutely bloody nuts. Everyone in Derbyshire has my sympathy. Their police force are not coming out of this well are they?
HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 11/01/2021 19:17

If veg said grown locally I'd expect it to be in my county, which could be a lot of miles. I don't think miles and local work well together as local is just too subjective. For the exercise guidance I think they mean closer, maybe up to about 10.

froggydoggy · 11/01/2021 19:18

I'm 6.5 miles from the nearest town, I'd call that local.

Ideasplease322 · 11/01/2021 19:20

I live in a city, so a mile?

Randomrebel · 11/01/2021 19:21

My interpretation is within walking distance if you have to drive it’s too far.

itsgettingweird · 11/01/2021 19:22

@KylieKoKo

It depends. I went on a short bike ride in my lunch break and was surprised it ended up being 15 miles. On a bike local can be quite far!
Cycling a distance is fine. You started from where you already were. What they don't want is people drinking 10-15 ,lies to then go cycling!
LIZS · 11/01/2021 19:23

I would say 5, possibly up to 10, especially given jabs are supposed to be available within a 10mile radius. Furthest we have driven since March is 8, for medical appointment and covid test.
