Has anyone seen theories about why China aren't letting the WHO in by the way? They've had a whole year, so surely there's been enough time by now to hide anything that needed hiding. I'm scratching my head as to what the motivations even could be at this point. New outbreak? Protest groups? Found the cause during clean-up?

TheSunIsStillShining · 06/01/2021 15:46

@Wakeupin2022

  • Exactly Feb 8 is the official HU government date as of today, from ppl going into the country from UK, including HU citizens.
  • Non citizens are not allowed in the country from other countries either.
  • HU citizens from other countries have to quarantine for 10 days, and the police is enforcing it at a location of residence (as a HU citizen you have to have a residency address)

We were thinking (briefly) of going to HU in early dec for a month or so, but our residency address is our old flat which is now rented. And nothing else is allowed.

Pinch of salt needed on reading, because Taiwan news obviously never reports well about China. But concerning info about Sinopharm.
Not suitable for over 60s: www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/4093764
Lots of side effects: www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/4095622.

The WHO group been infiltrated with spies, protestors, agents keen to "blame china" rather than a proper no fault root cause etc.

Perihelion · 06/01/2021 15:59

How much genomic testing does France do? Because they were at over 50,000 positive tests in late October/early November. Am wondering if the new variant came in via the ports, multiple times, explaining why Kent was hit so hard and early.

TheSunIsStillShining · 06/01/2021 16:03

I don't see the point of this guessing game.
It would be really valuable to know where and how it came from to prevent it from happening again, but that would be WHO territory.

Does anyone have a good grasp of the info put out by nextstrain? From this my takeaway is that the new variant is getting lots of separate introductions to other places. But can we tell anything else given that sequencing is done preferentially and not randomly? What other takeaways do you get from this?

Thanks I’m advance to those with superior knowledge and understanding!

Wakeupin2022 · 06/01/2021 16:04

I'm sure Sinopharm was being positively compared to Oxford by a certain poster last year (despite no data to back up the claims)

TheSunIsStillShining · 06/01/2021 16:06

Daily: 62,322
Deaths: 1,041
hospital admissions: 3,179Daily number of patients admitted reported on 29 December 2020

ceeveebee · 06/01/2021 16:08

Over 1,000 deaths
Hopefully these are including an element of backlog from the last week or two. But it will cause some massive headlines

I had wondered that, are there age profiles for France?

However their numbers dropped away pretty sharply, so whatever they did obviously worked.

But not for very long, and it came back under control pretty quickly with much less restrictive measures and all kids in school full time. Transmission rates amongst children didn’t increase the way they have in the UK. So I don’t think it supports the same variant being here. Also they’ve been genome testing looking for the UK variant and haven’t found many yet.
FingonTheValiant · 06/01/2021 16:17

Sorry, that’s inaccurate, some lycée are offering alternative provision. The vast majority of pupils are in though.

ATieLikeRichardGere · 06/01/2021 16:24

I think B117 started here personally, just from the POV that it seems to have taken off here first, much like the whole thing took off in China.

But in terms of whether other places are picking it up or was pointed out a couple of weeks ago that “Public Health Wales sequenced about 4,000 genomes in the past week, more than the whole of France since the beginning of the pandemic.”

So not sure we are getting great data from France.

MRex · 06/01/2021 16:26

@sirfredfredgeorge - ah yes, quite possibly.

littleowl1 · 06/01/2021 16:28

Table of daily cases in each council in England is updated with todays data now on www.covidmessenger.com

ATieLikeRichardGere · 06/01/2021 16:33

Rising in all but 5 council areas - which I think is unchanged?

JanuaryChill · 06/01/2021 16:34

@sirfredfredgeorge you mean that's what the Chinese are claiming?

JanuaryChill · 06/01/2021 16:36

Thanks for the discussion of the "Anonymous" article. Like you (altho am much less knowledgeable), I thought parts of it sounded credible, parts not, and I was dubious about the overall tone.

I saw it posted on the Parents United Against Unsafe Schools Fb Page, where it was getting lots of Likes....

Thanks so much littleowl1 - it looks, depressingly, like that little bit of hope that it was starting to fall in the worst-affected bits of Kent and Essex was misguided? Universal rises in both counties today, and some terrifying rates in the worst of them, especially Essex.
Hardbackwriter · 06/01/2021 16:43

Universal rise in London, too

Rosehip10 · 06/01/2021 16:43

@littleowl1 Are you able to include, welsh and Scottish counties?... Thanks!

QueenStromba · 06/01/2021 16:47

35 boroughs with more than 1 case per 100! The median case rate is 493 per 100,000.

MRex · 06/01/2021 16:50

@JanuaryChill - I assumed @sirfredfredgeorge was making a funny joke.
People don't always think in depth before hitting "like".

Firefliess · 06/01/2021 16:59

Case rates high again today, and we should be starting to see a fall in numbers now we're away from the post-Christmas mixing. If we can bring rates down with schools closed and full lockdown, we are going to see most people catch it rather than get vaccinated
