I too was checking my news feed at 7 hoping for news about the Oxford vaccine. Not today, it seems.

Does anyone remember who released the news about the Pfizer approval? Was it Pfizer themselves, or the MHRA?

mrshonda · 29/12/2020 10:30

Come on Oxford!

Bathroom12345 · 29/12/2020 10:35

Where is the announcement?? I wonder whether they don’t want to have a large gap between approval and when they actually start vaccination.

I hope they don’t mess this up but having seen the army clear the backlog of lorries at Dover... that is your answer. Please don’t leave it to PH England or the NHS. They cannot move quickly on something like this.

Bathroom12345 · 29/12/2020 10:36

Sorry, that was a bit negative... lots of newspapers were quoting 28 or 29th December and wonder where that came from. Someone has had a rethink methinks about how to announce this.

It came from a "Whitehall source". Recently the papers have been saying Weds or Thursday though.
FourTeaFallOut · 29/12/2020 11:45

I don't think we have any good reason to besmirch the integrity of the MHRA, do we? Based on what? Too quick and the people start claiming it wasn't done properly, too slow and what...somehow they're in cahoots and making the whole world wait for a PR stunt? Please.

IcedPurple · 29/12/2020 12:28

The EU medicines agency has said they haven't received all the data for Oxford and don't think they'll be able to approve it by the end of January. I really hope there's not some major issue with the data.

This is different to the UK approving it though isn’t it?

The EU was behind on approving and starting to distributed Pfizer too

FuzzyPuffling · 29/12/2020 12:42

The MHRA said they had all the data before Christmas...around the 21st, I think.

This is one thing we're ahead of the EU on.

( I don't want to mention all my previous comments on "three weeks from receipt of data to rollout" but it's looking likely! 😁

Yes, but it's not simply that they haven't got round to approving it yet. It's that Oxford haven't even supplied the full data. The post is on the Guardian live blog if you want to take a look.

There have been a lot of questions raised about the reliability and completeness of the Oxford data, so I hope that doesn't mean that the vaccine approval may be delayed or - please no! - not granted at all.

Brunt0n · 29/12/2020 12:57

Given that this is the good news thread... i’m not going to go seek out that bad news!

TheChineseChicken · 29/12/2020 12:59

“They have not even filed an application with us yet”, he said in an interview with the Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad on Tuesday.

Seems like it’s not an issue with the data, rather a lack of engagement on AZ’s part

Why would they not want to get their vaccine approved in the EU as soon as possible though?
TheChineseChicken · 29/12/2020 13:02

I don’t have an answer for that but perhaps they are concentrating efforts on engaging with the MHRA to get over that hurdle first. Possibly once that is done it’s easier to get past other agencies as all their ducks will be in a row?

chri55ie · 29/12/2020 13:03

Maybe politics is playing a part in all this, maybe EU Medicines agency is focusing on Moderna next and not ready for data yet, maybe Oxford Az have focused on the MHRA as we are ready? Who knows?

TheChineseChicken · 29/12/2020 13:05

Yes to all of this

Plibber · 29/12/2020 13:16

This is supposed to be a good news thread to cheer us all up!

Please can we stick to posting good news, rather than talking things down?

There are plenty of other doom&gloom threads around: this is one of only about 2 threads on the whole of MN that I dare to venture onto these days.

Yes! Thank you! If I wanted to be more depressed, god knows there’s enough out there to help that along
Bathroom12345 · 29/12/2020 13:34

Hear hear. There are plenty revelling in bad news, doom and gloom, end of normal life as we know it. How they manage to get through their day is beyond me. What a barrel of laughs they must be to live with!

Even if there is an issue (and the Guardian is a shocking newspaper with their woke agenda - Owen Jones anyone??) other vaccines will come around soon. The scientists around the world are working on this. Money is no object.

(Come on Oxford though....)

TheChineseChicken · 29/12/2020 13:40

I don’t see this as something to worry about

FuzzyPuffling · 29/12/2020 13:52

I see it as the MHRA doing their job properly and well...and who wouldn't want them to do that?

There's been so much media leakage, it really has got to be very soon indeed.

OP posts:
chri55ie · 29/12/2020 13:54

That’s what I think I too....too many people saying similar things. This week hopefully.

OrangeBananaFish · 29/12/2020 14:47

Here's some good news. Just had notification on my phone to say that Margaret has had her booster jab. So the second round now. In a week (I think it was) people will be as protected from the virus as they can be

tobee · 29/12/2020 14:57

Margaret Keenan's name just flashed up on my breaking news and I thought "oh no! What?" Pretty pleased that it was 2nd dose news and not something else!
