On my local news on the radio this morning they were saying about a further number (sorry cant remember the number) of vaccine sites being opened by Christmas eve. That is great in itself, but have they got more vaccines? Did another shipment of Pfizer come in? I'm being too hopeful about Oxford aren't I?

chri55ie · 23/12/2020 07:42

@CornishYarg I was just coming on to say the same thing. He has been reliable in the past. Wonder who his source is?! It will indeed be a ‘ultimate momento’ when this is approved!

FuzzyPuffling · 23/12/2020 08:16

This sounds like very positive news on the near horizon. My fingers are firmly crossed for the Christmas news we all want!

I need to try and remember that hopefully positive news is coming soon.

LJC1234 · 23/12/2020 08:35

I'm feeling so positive about the Oxford vaccine . The suspicious part of me thinks they won't announce approval till after Xmas so people don't go crazy with Christmas mixing but I'm feeling so positive it's coming 😀

There are reports that they're being secretive about deliveries and distribution because of security.
Sunshinegirl82 · 23/12/2020 09:05

My strong suspicion (based on nothing other that gut feeling!) is that they will approve Oxford immediately after Christmas and combine that with stronger restrictions across the board whilst they vaccinate as many people as they can as quickly as possible.

I think the next 6-8 weeks will be a bit tough but I really think there is light at the end of the tunnel now.

TeaInTheGarden · 23/12/2020 09:12

If oxford wasn’t on the way I don’t know what I would do. The way I’m checking my phone is becoming slightly obsessive 😳

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 23/12/2020 09:14

I read in the Daily Mail that they are about to split Pfizer into 75s and get it into care homes. This week’s big push has been care homes apparently.

So great to read about the confidence re Oxford vaccine and new strains.

OrangeBananaFish · 23/12/2020 09:24

@cathyandclare I think I was just hoping for the oxford.

Next week 🤞

fierybeast · 23/12/2020 09:38

will the Oxford work against the mutant virus? Will they be checking this before it is approved?

IcedPurple · 23/12/2020 10:17

From The Guardian blog:

"The AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine could be approved by UK regulators “shortly after” Christmas, according to a medical scientist.

Professor Sir John Bell, Oxford University’s regius professor of medicine, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme that he expects approval by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) “pretty shortly”.

He said: “They got data quite a long time ago but that was the first set of data. They receive multiple sets of data. So we are getting to be about prime time now, I would expect some news pretty shortly.

“I doubt we’ll make Christmas now, but just after Christmas I would expect. I have no concerns whatsoever that the data looks better than ever.”

Approval of the Oxford vaccine would be a major boost to efforts to control Covid-19 because it is easier to distribute than the Pfizer/BioNTech jab currently being used in the UK.

The government has ordered 100 million doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, with around 40 million available by the end of March."

I’m listening to a conference on new variant.

My goodness still love the scientists. Saving our bacon and they are excellent here.

Yes it will but if it didn't they can tweak until it does
MarshaBradyo · 23/12/2020 11:19

Did I hear right we do over 45% of sequencing here? Bit noisy here

Bk21 · 23/12/2020 11:20

@Spiratedaway what is it saying regarding kids

SpnBaby1967 · 23/12/2020 11:20

I'm just hoping that once more of the at risk are vaccinated, that we can all start to get on with our lives a bit more freely.

MarshaBradyo · 23/12/2020 11:23

Too early to make any conclusions on age distribution

I am not listening to it but dh read out a similar figure this morning so I expect so.

Yep, I went to bed last night with Ultimo Momento ringing in my ears! Really hope the rumours are true.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 23/12/2020 13:35

They need to get on and release some more vaccine numbers because Israel has edged ahead of us in the doses per hundred people league! Smile

They’re on 0.83. Go Israel!
