Has Boris got the balls to cancel Xmas for London?

Gobacktothe90s · 11/12/2020 19:55

Obviously the answer is no, but the huge increase in cases in London should tell anyone it's not a good idea for Xmas mixing. How high will the rates go before he has to step in?

I think rather than cancel Xmas for the worst hit areas the only thing he would do is cancel Xmas mixing for everyone and do a complete u turn rather than single London out.
If however the North west still had high rates he would have no hesitation In stopping the north west mixing at Xmas but allowed other areas to mix.

He should do but I don’t think he will. I also agree about the north.

Lockdown will be back in January.

No! No more lockdowns.
MarshaBradyo · 11/12/2020 19:57

No
But I don’t think he would anywhere

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 11/12/2020 19:59

He has shat on the north throughout. When the first lockdown started the North east had a nominal amount of cases. Yet we all duly locked down bevaise London.

OverTheRainbow88 · 11/12/2020 20:14

No he shouldn’t, he should cancel household mixing for all for Christmas.

America is fucked because of thanksgiving, why don’t we ever learn from others?

cardibach · 11/12/2020 20:16

So what’s your answer @kittensarecute ?
You can’t dismiss lockdowns without explaining why, never mind how you would control infections without one.

Delatron · 11/12/2020 20:16

I just don’t get why they made a call on it so early. Why didn’t he just wait to see what happened to the figures after lockdown?

What about the other religions festivals that’s were cancelled the night before?

kittensarecute · 11/12/2020 20:21

We can't keep locking down again and again and again, the economy will be decimated and people's mental health will suffer. Its cruel and unfair.
Luckyrabbitfoot · 11/12/2020 20:22

@kittensarecute but what’s the alternative?

kittensarecute · 11/12/2020 20:24

I don't know, I'm not a scientist or a medical person but we can't just keep locking down, I do know that.

timeforanewstart · 11/12/2020 20:30

What for people to take no notice
People barely follow the looser restrictions now
It will most likely go tier 3 in the review of tiers but they aren't going to backtrack on the xmas plans now , people have made plans and most prob wouldn't change them anyway
Most people i know are all cutting back on xmas visits etc even if not strictly following rules at all times

ginswinger · 11/12/2020 20:32

I really hope Christmas mixing is cancelled, it is a recipe for disaster. I know that's not popular and will cause pain for many but if we want to curb a third wave in late January, we must do this. It's not fair on the NHS staff who are doing far more than they signed up for. Some decent leadership would be very much appreciated too.

timeforanewstart · 11/12/2020 20:33

@Delatron xmas is not just a religious festival its also a public bank holiday
Easter was cancelled as a religious festival , eid only certain parts of the country were on restrictions I believe , divali all in lockdown but none of the are also a public holiday and or celebrated by more than 90% of the country

timeforanewstart · 11/12/2020 20:34

@ginswinger do you not think any nhs staff will use the time to mix at xmas aa well

user1936863452 · 11/12/2020 20:35

You're talking about a man who's happy to fuck the entire country up for his own ego. Why would he do anything that doesn't serve his own self-interest?

Rosehip10 · 11/12/2020 20:37

The Government will not cancel the Christmas plans - they would not want the optics of mass non compliance - better to have the 5 days, then say after, sadly we need a four week lockdown in Jan.

timeforanewstart · 11/12/2020 20:39

He is not going to cancel and neither will wales , nI or Scotland
People are mixing everyday at work and school , round here people are barely following all the rules anyway
No one is back to normal but the rules are being followed loosely
By having a few days allowed they probably hope this will stop too many going over the top a blanket ban could not be enforced

kittensarecute · 11/12/2020 20:40

I'll be done if there's another lockdown. Physically and mentally done. I can't do it again.
ragged · 11/12/2020 20:41

It's not workable.
DD is a student in London.
Like 100k others.
She could come home today but booked her tickets back for next week.

"Cancelling Christmas in London" means...
Students should not be allowed home?
Students should only be allowed home if they leave by X date?
Students from London should stick to Tier 3 rules even if rest of country gets to relax for 23rd-27th?
Cancel Christmas for everyone -- I guess govt can refund all the travel tickets arranged & turkeys ordered, then.

You Lot can tell the oldies in Care Homes who expected to see their loved ones at Christmas break.

It's not workable.

^^

This!
Instead we're 'fun sponges'

pollylocketpickedapocket · 11/12/2020 20:43

Trust me, in the north west we’re having Xmas as normally as we possibly can!

tinselfest · 11/12/2020 20:45

You can't cancel Christmas. It will be on December 25th no matter what.

Londonmummy66 · 11/12/2020 20:54

The looser rules for Christmas should be pulled - the idea that we can create a big surge in infections for a family party is just ridiculous.

Beyond that the problem is that the parts of London where rates are rising are not the ones that would be affected by tier 3 restrictions/lockdown - the affected areas are the NW and NE and the areas that would suffer the most economically are the centre. It is also almost certainly the case that the areas where there are rapidly rising infections in London are areas where people have to go out to work regardless. ALso imposing tier 3 will mean people just meet up in private homes if hospitality etc is closed.
I think in London, tier 3 is counter productive - close hospitality and everyone will either meet up to go shopping (Boxing Day sales in Oxford St anyone?) or go into private houses where they will mix in much closer quarters than in hospitality.

gongy · 11/12/2020 20:57

What for people to take no notice

This!

I mean what 60k have died & some still don't bother with masks or even believe in it. Christmas allows for some "get it out of your system" action & then we will probably be under stricter rules in Jan.

Brunt0n · 11/12/2020 20:57

The only people who are going to be stupid enough to mix in ‘Christmas bubbles’ are those who would have done it anyway, regardless of the rules. They’ve only made the exceptions so they don’t look fucking stupid when people realise they don’t have the man power to enforce any of it
