Refused entry to a chain pub as can't download app on my phone

Legoandloldolls · 15/10/2020 16:40

Just that really. Went into a non chain cafe who wanted me to scan a QR code but I pointed out that I have a new(!) Andriod and only have 36gb to run the phone and apps. Photos etc go onto a SD card. So I can only have a handful of apps. That was fine and they took my phone number.

But later on in a pub chain they wont allow you in without the app. So, what happens if you dont have a smart phone? I rarely go to the pub, cafes now but i think i might have to download the app to my iPad, pair it and take the bloody iPad out in future.

Or delete three apps i use all the time to get enough space off my phone. My DHS phone is a iPhone 6 so his only option is too upgrade.

We are going out for dinner this week. I might just put my sim in my iPad as the solution. Not sure what is realistically easier, taking a iPad out, buying a iPhone or avoiding places that insist on track and trace.

I’ve got an iPhone and if I open my camera and hold it over the QR code it takes me to the webpage to log my details with T&T, I don’t have the app.

EvilPea · 15/10/2020 16:44

They should write your details down if you don’t have a smart phone / the app or qr code reader.

HowFastIsTooFast · 15/10/2020 16:46

@MonkeyPuddle

I’ve got an iPhone and if I open my camera and hold it over the QR code it takes me to the webpage to log my details with T&T, I don’t have the app.
This. I've done loads of QR code check-ins (and a good number of QR menus where they've done away with physical ones) and never needed any kind of app.
TheOneWhoWalksInTheSun · 15/10/2020 16:49

They obviously don't want your business!

Support the independents.

pointyshoes · 15/10/2020 17:02

Legally, they’re supposed to offer an alternative if you don’t have the app (eg write details down). But as they obviously don’t want your business, I’d go elsewhere!

BamboozledandBefuddled · 15/10/2020 17:02

@EvilPea

They should write your details down if you don’t have a smart phone / the app or qr code reader.
This but obviously they would rather lose custom, so let them. I've only seen this attitude being reported about big chains so hopefully it will mean more customers for smaller, independent businesses.
TeachesOfPeaches · 15/10/2020 17:03

You can just use the camera on the iPhone, no app

Cbatothinkofausername · 15/10/2020 17:08

Another one for don’t go back there, support the independents.

But TBH it sounds like your phone isn’t fit for purpose. What would you do if it was an app you really wanted?

Sophiesdog2020 · 15/10/2020 17:15

Op

Maybe email head office with the following links and sections of them:

ico.org.uk/about-the-ico/news-and-events/news-and-blogs/2020/09/data-protection-guidance-for-collecting-customer-information/

Organisations should not make the use of contact tracing apps mandatory, and should give people options to give their details for contact tracing purposes.

www.gov.uk/guidance/maintaining-records-of-staff-customers-and-visitors-to-support-nhs-test-and-trace

Venues must not make the specific use of the NHS QR code a precondition of entry (as the individual has the right to choose to provide their contact details if they prefer).

EasternDailyStress · 15/10/2020 17:18

Sorry, ONLY 36gb?? I've got 32gb and it's more than enough to run at least 50 or so apps. What an earth kind of phone have you got?

Beeeees · 15/10/2020 17:24

I don’t believe there are any 36gb phones. 32gb with an sd card on top is more than a lot of people have though. Should be ample room on a new phone without clutter.

shamalidacdak · 15/10/2020 17:25

Why can't you have more apps? You've got tons of space. Also I think majority of people have smartphones now

SaskiaRembrandt · 15/10/2020 17:30

36gb seems an odd amount - unless it's changed, storage comes in multiples of 8, so 8, 16, 32, 64, etc. But even if you do have 36gb, that is plenty of space for more than 3 apps.

ifonly4 · 15/10/2020 17:31

I thought the new NHS app which had the QR code was meant to have minimal requirements. Either way, elderly people are really going to struggle with socialising in a different environment/treating themselves on their own. Guess they're not going to get your trade in the future, but frustrating.

TheWindOnTheMoon · 15/10/2020 17:33

My phone is more than 2 years old and has 16GB with an SD card. I have the app and loads of other apps too, without any storage problems.

Sorry wrong thread.

historyrocks · 15/10/2020 17:40

Which app are you referring to? I have an iPhone 6. The camera scans the QR code without any problems and then takes you to a webpage to enter details. No app needed.

Legoandloldolls · 15/10/2020 17:41

Maybe my phone is a 32gb. I guess it must be. It's just one of the latest Samsung Galaxy phones. They do a cheap one, mid range and expensive but they all have the same internal storage.

I have about ten apps on the phone currently and unless I delete one, I can't download anything. To get the NHS app it wanted me to delete three of them. Today, I though ok bugger it, I will down load it, it's just gets stuck on a install cycle.

If my phone gets clogged up with photos, it needs cleaning even if I move the photos to SD.

It's all the data with messenger and what's app to. A fair amount of crap and cookies too I would guess. It really isnt a lot of memory as a good chunk is used by the operating system.

SausageCrush · 15/10/2020 17:41

I've got an iPhone 5 and it won't let me download the NHS app.
My phone is too old! Hmm

MonkeyPuddle · 15/10/2020 17:44

You don’t need to take a photo. You just open the camera and it reads the code.

Ginfordinner · 15/10/2020 17:48

Which model is it? It sounds like either your phone or your Wi-Fi is faulty if it won't download the app.

D00MGL00M · 15/10/2020 17:48

What ten apps are you using that take 32GB?

Im not asking to catch you out but for someone to help figure out why all your space is taken on just ten apps. It could be that you've got copies of media posted on messenger and WhatsApp and sometimes photo editing apps store a second copy in a separate folder so someone can help you move them to your as card.

My husbands shitty 16gb ancient android can hold more than 10 apps.

ImSleepingBeauty · 15/10/2020 17:57

I went in Costa the other day and they had someone on the door writing your name and number if you didn’t have the app.

If they hadn’t done this I would have just gone somewhere else. No big deal.

D00MGL00M · 15/10/2020 18:00

Also, I thought the ram/memory that runs the operating system is different to the physical long term storage for like apps and files?
