Refused entry to a chain pub as can't download app on my phone

Just that really. Went into a non chain cafe who wanted me to scan a QR code but I pointed out that I have a new(!) Andriod and only have 36gb to run the phone and apps. Photos etc go onto a SD card. So I can only have a handful of apps. That was fine and they took my phone number.

But later on in a pub chain they wont allow you in without the app. So, what happens if you dont have a smart phone? I rarely go to the pub, cafes now but i think i might have to download the app to my iPad, pair it and take the bloody iPad out in future.

Or delete three apps i use all the time to get enough space off my phone. My DHS phone is a iPhone 6 so his only option is too upgrade.

We are going out for dinner this week. I might just put my sim in my iPad as the solution. Not sure what is realistically easier, taking a iPad out, buying a iPhone or avoiding places that insist on track and trace.

Apps can be stored on SD cards. Unlike Apple products you can increase the memory on Android phones by sticking in an SD card.

SaskiaRembrandt · 15/10/2020 18:04

@Legoandloldolls

Maybe my phone is a 32gb. I guess it must be. It's just one of the latest Samsung Galaxy phones. They do a cheap one, mid range and expensive but they all have the same internal storage.

I have about ten apps on the phone currently and unless I delete one, I can't download anything. To get the NHS app it wanted me to delete three of them. Today, I though ok bugger it, I will down load it, it's just gets stuck on a install cycle.

If my phone gets clogged up with photos, it needs cleaning even if I move the photos to SD.

It's all the data with messenger and what's app to. A fair amount of crap and cookies too I would guess. It really isnt a lot of memory as a good chunk is used by the operating system.

I used to have a Samsung Galaxy, I had dozens of apps on it. If you can't there maybe something wrong with your phone.
SaskiaRembrandt · 15/10/2020 18:04

@D00MGL00M

Also, I thought the ram/memory that runs the operating system is different to the physical long term storage for like apps and files?
It is.

If you can't meet the requirements for entry to a private business, you can't enter. Not having a smartphone isn't a protected characteristic so you have no real grounds to argue. They could try other things, like writing down contact details etc, but if they aren't losing enough custom by preventing people without the app from entering, they won't bother. Go somewhere else and spend your money there!

Comefromaway · 15/10/2020 18:10

You can’t just use the camera to scan the NHS code on an iPhone 6 although you can if it’s a normal QR code like the ones most places used before the NHS app came out.

You can use the app on a 6S.

Places are going to lose a lot of custom. My mum still has an iPhone 4.

Comefromaway · 15/10/2020 18:13

@MonkeyPuddle

I’ve got an iPhone and if I open my camera and hold it over the QR code it takes me to the webpage to log my details with T&T, I don’t have the app.
That only works if they offer that option of scanning a normal QR code where you enter your details rather than insisting on the NHS one.
MonkeyPuddle · 15/10/2020 18:15

Oh I didn’t realise there was more than one type of QR code available, I’ve clearly struck it lucky when we’ve been out. How unnecessarily complicated.

Something is massively wrong with your phone! The biggest storage app on most phones is whatsap at 2-4gb. Everything else usually hovers between 200mb-2gb.

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/10/2020 18:34

ONLY 36gb My phone is 2Gb in total. Currently I have 346Mb free space.

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/10/2020 18:35

Not having a smartphone isn't a protected characteristic so you have no real grounds to argue. Not relevant. It's the Covid legislation people are talking about not discrimination legislation.

Download Google Photos and it backs up all your photos to the cloud for free.

Legoandloldolls · 15/10/2020 18:44

I'm having a dig about but I can't see what killing my storage. Both caches on internet are under 400mb.

Any ideas welcome. These are my biggest apps in size order.

Where is the rest of my 32gb?

Boycott these businesses, I am

Legoandloldolls · 15/10/2020 18:46

@Honeybobbin

Just... pretend to scan it.
That wouldnt have worked as he checked the person I was with as she was doing it.

I wonder if we had booked if this would have got round the app, or lack of?

I think my phone is ok, it's me! I am a web developer ( programmer by trade) but that doesnt make me a expert in android.

User error? 😭

I don't know, but something is using up a lot space. I'm guessing you've deleted temp files and other crap?
SciFiScream · 15/10/2020 18:56

Ultimately it doesn't really matter about your phone, the memory available or whether you have the app or not.

The business should have another compliant means of recording your data allowing you entry.

Not everyone can afford a smartphone (in fact people on benefits are derided if they have such luxuries!)
Not everyone wants a smartphone
Not everyone can use a smartphone
Not everyone has a modern enough smartphone - especially those who are frugally or environmentally minded.

Pick a different business, one that is happier to have more options available for customers to use.

It does matter to the OP if something on her phone is eating up tons of storage space and she can't see what it is. Even if she doesn't want to use this app there will be other things she might like to have.
Legoandloldolls · 15/10/2020 18:59

Downloaded the app. Its tiny!

I still think it's a ball ache to insist on it for entry. They have zero idea when you leave surely if you have bluetooth off?

Like I said they shouldn't insist on the app for entry. There should be another way of them complying with the track and trace trace.

Plus there's evidence that those people who have been using the QR codes are having their data sold on! Caroline Criado-Perez has tweeted about this.

Glad you got the app (if that's really what you wanted) hope you solve your memory thing another way.

Legoandloldolls · 15/10/2020 19:04

@SaskiaRembrandt I deleted my browsing history and looked at the cache on chrome and Samsung internet but both caches was tiny < 400gb.

Maybe I should delete them.anyway as it's not something I have ever cleared out.

I suspect the deleted stuff sits about somewhere but therrs no trash can like on a iphone. I think I need to Google

On my andriod phone I look in the storage setting not the app list to see what's taking up space if I need to free some up. Do a screenshot of that from settings and we can see where the problem is.

Something

JustSaying101 · 15/10/2020 19:07

This happened to us at a very well known theme park recently. We had obviously paid entry to the theme park and they had all our contact details. Whilst waiting in the queue to enter the restaurant, we explained we didn't have the app and we were planning to takeaway, but we were refused entry by the restaurant security man on the door! We offered to supply our details but we were still refused entry. The whole thing made no sense. Anyway, later on that day, we walked back past the same restaurant and by then, there was no queue and people were walking straight in, with no questions asked 🤔 Nice and consistent!

I get a screen saying that I have another application that is using the required tech to run it - I need those to work so what can I do???
