Refused entry to a chain pub as can't download app on my phone

Just that really. Went into a non chain cafe who wanted me to scan a QR code but I pointed out that I have a new(!) Andriod and only have 36gb to run the phone and apps. Photos etc go onto a SD card. So I can only have a handful of apps. That was fine and they took my phone number.

But later on in a pub chain they wont allow you in without the app. So, what happens if you dont have a smart phone? I rarely go to the pub, cafes now but i think i might have to download the app to my iPad, pair it and take the bloody iPad out in future.

Or delete three apps i use all the time to get enough space off my phone. My DHS phone is a iPhone 6 so his only option is too upgrade.

We are going out for dinner this week. I might just put my sim in my iPad as the solution. Not sure what is realistically easier, taking a iPad out, buying a iPhone or avoiding places that insist on track and trace.

The “old phone/not enough memory” problem is specific to the NHS app. Proprietary QR codes which just take you to the pub’s logging in page or menu or whatever will work if you just wave your phone over the QR code, but the new official NHS QR codes won’t do that, so you need a phone that’s less than 5 years old and to download the app.

They legally do have to maintain another means of recording your identity though. If you can be arsed then you can email them to complain and enclose a link to the government webpage.
@SaskiaRembrandt I deleted my browsing history and looked at the cache on chrome and Samsung internet but both caches was tiny < 400gb.

Maybe I should delete them.anyway as it's not something I have ever cleared out.

I suspect the deleted stuff sits about somewhere but therrs no trash can like on a iphone. I think I need to Google
I assue you mean 400mb!

You might need to empty your bin in Google photos, have you tried that.

I have 32gb on my phone, 10 for the operating system, 10 for apps - nearly 100 apps and the rest is photos, if I need more space I delete some photos

Legoandloldolls · 15/10/2020 19:10

@SciFiScream

Like I said they shouldn't insist on the app for entry. There should be another way of them complying with the track and trace trace.

Plus there's evidence that those people who have been using the QR codes are having their data sold on! Caroline Criado-Perez has tweeted about this.

Glad you got the app (if that's really what you wanted) hope you solve your memory thing another way.

No I dont want the app because from what I hear it's a pile of poo anyway. Gov already has tried and tested and very effective disease control apps so why they couldn't go with one of those providers, must be backhanders.

I normally meet with one friend, or my sister, or a school run during covid times so I dont need T&T in reality as school, my sister and mate would tell me if anyone was getting a covid test.

I only need it for times like today.

Vote with your feet and don't go back.

cologne4711 · 15/10/2020 19:36

@unmarkedbythat

If you can't meet the requirements for entry to a private business, you can't enter. Not having a smartphone isn't a protected characteristic so you have no real grounds to argue. They could try other things, like writing down contact details etc, but if they aren't losing enough custom by preventing people without the app from entering, they won't bother. Go somewhere else and spend your money there!
They are legally required to offer a manual form of taking details. It has nothing to do with discrimination, and as a business you have to follow the law.

I had an old Samsung J5 a few years ago and had exactly the same problem - could only have a handful of apps, and the operating system appeared to use up around 75% of the available storage space. Spent half my time emptying the cache so I could take a single photo. There were loads of pre-installed apps which were undeletable and couldn't be moved to the SD card.

I solved the problem by getting a new phone and it's been fine ever since, so I don't think it was user error - just something peculiar happening with the phone.

Ginfordinner · 15/10/2020 21:16

Samsung phones contain a lot of apps I never use and can't delete. It is irritating,

lljkk · 15/10/2020 21:33

Which model Samsumg do you have, OP?

CoolYourBeansMySon · 16/10/2020 00:32

I have an iPhone 6 which hasn't updated the newer software to be able to install the app. I need to have it for work because they are relying on it and I don't know what they have in place for people that can't. I went to a pub at the weekend and they insisted on the app or photo ID, which I had left at home. They used to have a list for people without the app but people were just signing it [email protected] etc so had to ditch it. I can see that it was difficult but the others I was with had the app or ID so they eventually let me stay. It's not an easy balance to make!

Nat6999 · 16/10/2020 00:35

Name & shame on their social media pages, negative publicity normally gets a reaction.

40somethingJBJ · 16/10/2020 02:32

I have an iPhone with 138 apps, 1,563 photos and hundreds of WhatsApp messages etc clogging it up, yet I’ve only used just over 30gb! I think your phone needs looking at!

It is irritating that places require the app to go in, as lots of people have older phones/no smartphone etc. My elderly father wouldn’t know where to start.

lljkk · 16/10/2020 05:27

I just cleared 4 GB of videos from my Galaxy S8 (sheesh) a model launched spring 2018 so not as new as OP's Galaxy I presume.. tbf, My S8 has about 33 GB used of 64 GB. Only 12.9 GB of that is Apps, so 21 GB is ... not sure!! Now clearing a lot of images.

BameChange123 · 16/10/2020 06:47

Pray tell which Chain is this?

DeathMetalMum · 16/10/2020 06:53

Do you not set your photos to automatically store on the SD card? That would save a tonne of space.

DeathMetalMum · 16/10/2020 06:55

Plus every so often I have to clear out everything from WhatsApp as it saves absolutely everything you view (pictures videos etc) to your phone for some reason. My phone does it in it's own file though so can easily delete the whole lot.

FatimaMunchy · 16/10/2020 07:02

We had this issue at a Greene King pub. They said it was because the NHS don't inform them if there is a case.

SoVeryLost · 16/10/2020 07:11

@Legoandloldolls

I'm having a dig about but I can't see what killing my storage. Both caches on internet are under 400mb.

Any ideas welcome. These are my biggest apps in size order.

Where is the rest of my 32gb?

On your phone you have 9gb of photos and 5gb of video, that information is not on your SD card. That’s what is using up your phone data.
PhilCornwall1 · 16/10/2020 07:20

We are going out for dinner this week. I might just put my sim in my iPad as the solution.

Looking at the nhs site for the app, it says don't download onto an iPad, I've also looked at the code for the app when the new version was first released and it does check if it's attempting to run on an iPad and halts its execution.

PurBal · 16/10/2020 07:33

The law/guidance says that analogue test and trace should be available.

Ginfordinner · 16/10/2020 07:41

@CoolYourBeansMySon is right. All the idiots who boast on mumsnet about giving false information is the reason why more places are insisting on people using the app.

So people who don't have the right technology are losing out because of these selfish people.

eurochick · 16/10/2020 08:53

@DeathMetalMum it does that automatically but you can change the setting.

Legoandloldolls · 17/10/2020 22:10

I got the app to work today as it was the next time out in a cafe.

At first it didnt work but it did after I restarted my phone. It was a indi cafe so they took my number while I faffed about. Got home and turned bluetooth off again.

What a faff!

Same problem here. I don't and never plan to own a "smart" phone. I have a laptop but hate the new society where people feel the need to have everything at their fingertips glued to their phone. I'm only 30 so traders can't believe I don't own one. Ridiculous really

Frequentcarpetflyer · 17/10/2020 22:22

You shouldn't have to buy an expensive phone in order to go to restaurants.

HugeAckmansWife · 17/10/2020 22:32

I tried to use it but it didn't recognise my postcode, so I uninstalled it again. Pointless.
