I've been watching the Press conference and I always find Chris Witty the voice of reason. He is saying that we are at the limit of what we can open without the virus spreading further and we may even have to take a step back. So where does this leave the opening of schools in a few weeks time?

I predict we will have schools shutting around the UK within 8 weeks of return.

absolutelyknackeredcow · 31/07/2020 12:32

I think they will keep schools open but close other businesses.

Itisasecret · 31/07/2020 12:33

They will open schools even if they close everything else. Gav said that a while ago.

confusedandold · 31/07/2020 12:34

@absolutelyknackeredcow
That was the impression that I got too - that school openings will mean they will have to close certain other businesses. I hope another journalist asks about schools.

The schools need to go back. Children cannot be out of education for a whole school year. That’s madness unless they plan to redo the year for all.

JamieLeeCurtains · 31/07/2020 12:37

I can't see universities functioning normally at all this coming academic year, no matter what the university vice-chancellors are saying to get students to sign up and part with their not insignificant amounts of borrowed money, for what will effectively be correspondence courses they could get much cheaper from English-speaking European universities.

covetingthepreciousthings · 31/07/2020 12:38

And this is why I'm putting off buying any new school uniform for the time being....

I don't see how schools can reopen when they are now saying they can't even open bowling alleys etc.

MotheringShites · 31/07/2020 12:39

I was watching this thinking the same.

If we have reached the limits of what we can safely do, what does that mean for the long term? Is this it? Are we stuck like this until there is a vaccine?

DocusDiplo · 31/07/2020 12:40

I NEED schools to open :'(

sleepyhead · 31/07/2020 12:40

Scottish schools go back a week on Tuesday so they'll be beginning to have some idea of how it's gone.

Uhoh2020 · 31/07/2020 12:41

Its better to keep schools open and close leisure activities. If there's nothing else open school is the only place they can mix and within the same "bubble". Not great for the economy though I can't imagine they want to re start the furlough scheme again

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 31/07/2020 12:42

Given they are saying household transmissions are high, what do people expect when thirty plus go back into a classroom all day with no PPE or social distancing? With no idea if others having being following the rules/guidelines, have travelled and adhered to quarantine etc.

That’s my understanding of his comments, yes.
MiniCoffee · 31/07/2020 12:44

I am not buying uniform yet either.

AgeLikeWine · 31/07/2020 12:44

We also appear to have reached the limit of the extent to which people can be trusted to behave responsibly and stick to social distancing.

GreyGardens88 · 31/07/2020 12:45

Chris Witty = Arch Dementor

People have been mixing at work, in their own homes etc. Shutting down leisure places will just mean more people going into other households and sharing that way.

Between the line
"You have all been very naughty again, so you are all grounded for another 2 weeks"
Except mps they are untouchable and above the law especially when they need an eye test.

iVampire · 31/07/2020 12:47

I took it to mean the plan to re-open schools was included in the limit

But it’s usefully ambiguous, isn’t it?

deathswiftlyfollows · 31/07/2020 12:51

@drinkingwineoutofamug this was the ad below your reply 😂😂😂😂

Very ambiguous..

Oh my god, if we’re stuck like this until there’s a vaccine I will break. My mum and dad aren’t letting us in the house to visit now, which I understand and accept, but I was hoping they would change their mind as more and more restrictions eased.
If schools shut I will actually probably have a breakdown. I’m a teacher and need to work to feel sane at the moment.

DameFanny · 31/07/2020 12:52

This Dementor trope is so fucking childish. If people kept their distance and wore a mask lives would have been saved and we'd be closer to a safe reopening of everything but no, more important that you hug your friend and don't wear a mask for 10 minutes because YOU'RE not worried than someone else's gran gets to leave their house with confidence.

Fucking ubermenschy shite.

Illusionordelusion · 31/07/2020 12:53

What businesses would remain closed?
