Chris Witty "We're at the limits of the contact we can allow"

I've been watching the Press conference and I always find Chris Witty the voice of reason. He is saying that we are at the limit of what we can open without the virus spreading further and we may even have to take a step back. So where does this leave the opening of schools in a few weeks time?

They will open schools even if they close everything else. Gav said that a while ago.

Good. Although nothing every really sticks and no more furlough. Still at least it was said.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 31/07/2020 13:58

Hopefully they will open schools and close everything else. School is more important than the pub.

Livelovebehappy · 31/07/2020 14:02

I’m just totally pissed off with the whole thing. I really don’t think a lot of people follow the rules, and police are not given enough powers to enforce them. People just don’t seem to care that as things currently are, we are all going to be put back into total lockdown. I’m at the point of caring more about the economy and the certain recession we are facing, than whether or not I catch the virus. But as it seems we are not going to be able to get back to normal until zero infections, then stricter measures need to be put in place.

Sistery · 31/07/2020 14:02

Why I’m earth is Boris saying ‘back to offices’? Why not continue to work from home if you can? Surely that’s a really easy no brainer step?

MarshaBradyo · 31/07/2020 14:03

I’m feel like I’m reaching the limit with suppression

What are we aiming for? Still capacity of NHS or r under 1

Purely economic reasons. We travel to work we are buying fuel or train tickets , paying for car parking . We grab a coffee on the way in , grab a sandwich at lunch or mooch around the shops on a lunch hour. When we go out to work we spend money.
Etinox · 31/07/2020 14:06

@DameFanny

This Dementor trope is so fucking childish. If people kept their distance and wore a mask lives would have been saved and we'd be closer to a safe reopening of everything but no, more important that you hug your friend and don't wear a mask for 10 minutes because YOU'RE not worried than someone else's gran gets to leave their house with confidence.

Fucking ubermenschy shite.

it's 'billybigbollocks I'm such a critical thinker' thoughtlessness isn't it Angry
iVampire · 31/07/2020 14:06

What do you mean like children have been cooped in 1 room for the past few months?

?? Even shielded children have been allowed out for unlimited outdoor leisure and to meet (with distancing) a certain number

Same reason why the new "lockdowns" have stopped people socializing in homes but allowing them in venues that take credit cards like pubs and restaurants.

AnneOfQueenSables · 31/07/2020 14:14

Scottish schools go back a week on Tuesday so they'll be beginning to have some idea of how it's gone
Yy it's starting to feel like the poll tax all over again. I'm not overjoyed about our DCs being the guinea pigs for schools re-opening.
It doesn't actually make sense to open them and close everything else because they are the largest gathering points. Lots of our friends are working from home, not going to the pub/restaurants/leisure centres. If schools reopen, all the people who are currently limiting contact are going to be thrown into a mixing pot with the people who are being lax; with younger DCs who don't social distance; with high school teachers who are mixing with other classes.

It certainly sounded like Chris Whitty was saying that this level of circulating is the max and that schools returning is the highest priority therefore to allow that level of circulation needed in schools, other things will have to shut and reduce movement in order to facilitate it. I agree really, children have been a poor focus throughout. I imagine schools will go back with masks etc and only once that has happened relatively successfully, other things reopen again.

MotheringShites · 31/07/2020 14:20

I know I sound thick but how does the long term plan work if it’s not a case of severely limiting activities until a vaccine is available?

Every ease of lockdown will surely see a rise in cases. Are we looking at herd immunity but reaching that over a very long period of time?

Piixxiiee · 31/07/2020 14:21

Just had an email from my head teacher. More guidance week of 24th August but we will be open for all at the moment. Been told to submit all plans up until October half term then they will review ...

SillyUnMurphy · 31/07/2020 14:25

The mumsnet obsession with keeping schools closed is really getting on my last nerve. In real life I know not a soul that agrees that children should be out of education for one moment longer. In this instance Mumsnet is the ultimate smack of “I’m alright Jack and sod the rest of you!”

WearyandBleary · 31/07/2020 14:25

Fucksticks. This has made me feel so depressed. I feel as though Chris Whitty basically said “This is as good as it gets”. Fuck.

monkeytennis97 · 31/07/2020 14:26

@GreyGardens88

Chris Witty = Arch Dementor
HmmAngry

I’m happily wearing a mask.

However, late lockdown, discharge of elderly to care homes without testing for covid, and then no PPE in the care homes led to the high death rate in Britain. We couldn’t have worn masks at the time as there weren’t the supplies. Even now they are minimising risks to very vulnerable people and keeping r rate down.

Uhoh2020 · 31/07/2020 14:28

For a good while it was 1 hour outside and with only members of their household. In normal circumstances we would query why a child is kept away in the house for such a long time. If you seriously think children have not been affected then you are you are bonkers. So we keep them at home even longer so young adults can socialise because young adults socialising is far more important than a child's education? The home learning provided during kickdown does not in any equate to getting educated.
ineedaholidaynow · 31/07/2020 14:28

I don't think people want schools closed but they do want them to open safely and to be able to stay open, but it is very difficult to see how that can be done

SillyUnMurphy · 31/07/2020 14:28

Chris Whitty purely follows science. He does not mitigate risk the way that the government need to. Coupled with the fact that he is an advisor - they don’t need to follow everything he suggests

Itisasecret · 31/07/2020 14:30

I absolutely hope that they follow their original promise and prioritise school and close other stuff.

I work in a school and have school age children, everyone wants to go back. I literally only hear the doom from the same people on MN. The vocal minority, no one in real life feels like this.

There are some real hysterical posts here. Without realising how many children will really be struggling.

byvirtue · 31/07/2020 14:30

FFS let’s just issue everyone with a Hazmat suit and then we can all get back to normal.

Ps I’m only half joking.

justasking111 · 31/07/2020 14:31

Well found the Boris bit but not the whole statement certainly not Chris Witty. I give up.

jasjas1973 · 31/07/2020 14:31

@Uhoh2020 There never was a 1 hour rule for anything at all, be it exercise or taking the kids out for their exercise.

Anyone who stuck to that wasn't paying attention.
