I wore a facemask doing my shopping today...

Yes, I initially felt self conscious, slightly embarrassed and generally a bit of an arse. However, the sky didn't fall in, nobody pointed and laughed at me and after a few minutes I'd gotten over the initial discomfort.
I know it's not a rule to wear one, but on the list of embarrassing things I've done in my lifetime, it's very near the bottom. 😷

To stop them picking up and touching things that infected people may have touched?

To stop them picking up and touching things that infected people may have touched?

So just wash your hands when you get home? Or use sanitiser?

What do the gloves achieve that soap and water wouldn't achieve?

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 30/04/2020 14:44

To those saying they won’t wear it because it’s pointless, does that mean you don’t cover your mouth with a tissue, if you cough or sneeze? After all, if the mask that covers your mouth to protect others, when you cough/sneeze, then surely it’s pointless if you use a tissue or the crook of your elbow?

Brefugee · 30/04/2020 14:44

Its mandatory for us in Germany now and its horrible.Everyone looks so expressionless and anonymous .Its roasting hot behind the mask and I get claustrophopic wearing it.

how long are you spending in shops or are you on public transport? I think it's fine, and have had a fine old time spotting people who match them to their ties or outfit or whatever.

1forAll74 · 30/04/2020 14:45

I have been quite pleased when served by a person wearing a mask, I am hard of hearing in my right ear, and have to tell people, and they speak up more clearly for me in their masks. In normal times, I find that a lot of people mumble when speaking, like they have lost the ability to form words properly, and when you ask them to repeat anything, they get annoyed, and make a joke about some deafness.

loobyloo1234 · 30/04/2020 14:46

You are accusing people of using dirty gloves - I just wondered why you presumed they were dirty. Some people just want to wear gloves and dispose of instead of having to wait until they get home - or maybe dont have sanitiser

Its pretty simple really

Newdadtogirl · 30/04/2020 14:47

Good Job OP! No need to feel self conscious, all the cool kids are wearing them now!
My family and I have been wearing respirators since mid March to do the shopping. Wearing a respirator is the only responsible way to behave! There were funny looks at the start, now lots of people wear respirators, though most people wear the useless homemade or surgical masks (not respirators).
It wasn't ever going to take long before people realized the govt's guidance not to wear facemasks was utter nonsense! Respirators that are graded FFP2 (N95) and FFP3 (N99), fitted, removed and disposed of correctly WORK to reduce your chances of catching COVID19, obviously! The virus gets in to your lungs, stopping it entering your nose and mouth is an obvious good start!
The govt does not shop where I shop (or in early January), so my PPE stock, DOES NOT deprive the NHS of any PPE. Govt had Exercise Cygnet in 2016 and PPE was highlighted as an issue, Govt should have acquired adequate stocks.

Photos show me going to the corner shop and a few of the appropriate respirators to wear (haven't tried the bad boy on the top right in public yet).

The ones to feel embarrassed should be the ones not bothering. It slows transmission..... And its a minor inconvenience.

PurpleDaisies · 30/04/2020 14:47

Yes Brefugee I’ve read research. There is no such thing as “the research”.

All the scientific papers recognise the very limited nature of any evidence for the effectiveness of face mask wearing in the community.

vanillandhoney · 30/04/2020 14:48

I just don't see the point of wearing them really. It's just a waste of plastic when you can just wash your hands when you get home.

Wearing gloves and touching all the surfaces you'd have touched with bare hands isn't going to stop the virus spreading.

LemonadeAndDaisyChains · 30/04/2020 14:48

The funniest thing I’ve seen is people pulling the masks down to have a fag, then pulling them back up again.

Grin I was at the supermarket the other day and saw a bloke wearing a mask. Thing is though, he was wearing a mask and kept it pulled down to swig from his can of what looked like energy drink Confused Grin One point even dropped his can on the floor but picked up and had a drink again. I might have my judgy pants on but I couldn't help internally laughing and thinking "well you can't be that bothered about germs" lol Grin
LastTrainEast · 30/04/2020 14:49

Comparing wearing a mask to protect others around you to wearing one to hide your face is a bit ridiculous.

Meanwhile those objecting to them seem to only consider danger to the mask wearer so of course they don't get it.

EverythingChanges321 · 30/04/2020 14:50

I’ve been wearing my home made face masks when out shopping for several weeks now.

The first week back in March, I probably stood out to the other shoppers, especially as my outer fabric has a Mexican Day of the Dead skull print on it, but no-one seems to notice now as at least half the shoppers are wearing some kind of face covering.

Mind you, I’ve never been one to care about what I wear in public or what other people might think. I’ve always dressed to please myself.

I’m just making my latest batch of masks today for another friend and her family. If I’d have been selling them, I’d have made a small fortune by now from all the masks I’ve made. Grin

PurpleDaisies · 30/04/2020 14:50

To those saying they won’t wear it because it’s pointless, does that mean you don’t cover your mouth with a tissue, if you cough or sneeze?

What a bizarre point. It isn’t either use a mask or nothing at all. Confused

AmberBird · 30/04/2020 14:50

I will be wearing a face mask to go shopping or if I go on public transport. I don't see the problem as long as you're not taking valuable supplies from frontline workers - you should to protect yourself and importantly protect others around you by acting responsibly. @PurpleDaisies - "I won't be wearing one" why not? Sounds like Donald Trump!

leckford · 30/04/2020 14:54

I wear a mask when I go shopping anywhere apart from our local shop which is brilliant and only allows 3 people in at once

deydododatdodontdeydo · 30/04/2020 14:56

Were many other people wearing them, or were you in the minority?

For the last few weeks it's been all over the internet and social media about how useless (or even worse than useless!) masks are.
And now everyone's saying you're selfish and stupid not to?
Odd how the consensus changes so quickly.

TryingToBeBold · 30/04/2020 14:57

People will laugh if you become one of those people wearing a mask and gloves..

And then open your car boot.
Go get a trolley or basket without cleaning them.
Stand in the queue.
Play on your phone or make a phone call(removing the mask)
Pick up all your items round the shop.
Pick purse out of handbag and pick card to pay
And then return to car with same pair of gloves.. open boot, return trolley etc.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 30/04/2020 14:57

What a bizarre point. It isn’t either use a mask or nothing at all.

The only bizarre thing I’ve read on this, is the fact that some of you can’t seem to equate the two. In both cases, the mask wearer’s mouth is covered, so protects others, yet some of you don’t seem to understand that.

Miriel · 30/04/2020 14:57

I've been wearing one to the supermarket since mid-March. I did get stares and a few laughs at first. Now plenty of people are wearing them and nobody cares.

WanderingMilly · 30/04/2020 14:57

I have been wearing a mask (or scarf, depending upon where I am) and gloves for a while now when I go to the supermarket. No one bats an eyelid and others are doing the same, not a problem....

Astrabees · 30/04/2020 14:58

Masks - fine by me. Gloves can just make contamination worse, especially if you aren't taking them off in the correct way. Handwashing or using hand sanitiser is a much safer option.

PurpleDaisies · 30/04/2020 15:00

Amber I won’t be wearing one because it’s not compulsory to. I don’t think it’s right to call people selfish for not doing something we haven’t even been told we are supposed to do.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 30/04/2020 15:01

@T0tallyFuckedUpFamily I quite agree
I have long hair and put it in a ponytail . I put it in one whether I am shopping or not as its got long and straggly and just Ugh . Grin

HeresMe · 30/04/2020 15:03

Some people just want to wear gloves and dispose of instead of having to wait until they get home - or maybe dont have sanitiser

I hope they are being disposed off in a bin rather than on the floor, the thing is I don't trust the people who just throw used ones on floor to be using them correctly.
