I wore a facemask doing my shopping today...

Yes, I initially felt self conscious, slightly embarrassed and generally a bit of an arse. However, the sky didn't fall in, nobody pointed and laughed at me and after a few minutes I'd gotten over the initial discomfort.
I know it's not a rule to wear one, but on the list of embarrassing things I've done in my lifetime, it's very near the bottom. 😷

Just had our first post-Covid one-on-one play date where the children biked and took a walk. Played with dolls on a picnic blanket. The other mom and myself sat in porch chairs six feet apart and had a glass of wine. No masks.

There are no words. Well there are, but I’d get banned for using them. No fucking wonder Covid is still spreading!

I've been wearing one right from the very start when I've been shopping, as well as gloves.
The people who still ignore the two metre rule give me good reason to think I'm doing the right thing, especially as my DM and my two dcs are shielding.

I assume this is in a different country, not the UK?

post-Covid

Did I miss the news where a vaccine or suitable treatment has been discovered? Confused

Comenext · 03/05/2020 07:45

Before lockdown I tried to buy a mask in Boots
The Pharmacy assistant was quite snappy with me.
She told me they didn't work and tried to sell me First Defence and told me to buy hand sanitizer when it eventually came in stock!
I'd like to go back and make her eat her words.
Anyway it was easy enough to make a few masks for the family. I used old pillow cases and some elastic I had in my workbox. I sewed by hand and it took 2 hours to make 4 masks.

To those who ridicule single people in cars wearing a mask.

They may be returning from shopping etc where they have touched surfaces/products. Wearing a mask helps prevent you touching your face until you reach home where you can wash your hands.

formerbabe · 03/05/2020 08:04

Yesterday we went on a walk...a family were walking towards us all wearing masks..dh, myself and our dc walked past them in single file as far to the left as we could be...whilst the mum bizarrely refused to move over and continued to walk right down the middle of the pavement..inches from me.

It's amazing how thick some people are

That it was the mum is unusual in my experience. I get out once a week to shop for family and neighbours and the worst offenders for getting into other people's space, from what I've seen, are other men. Seriously crap at keeping their distance (from me at least).
I don't wonder why more men are getting it as the statistics seem to imply. Distancing obviously works.

formerbabe · 03/05/2020 10:19

Interesting...I've actually found women are worse at social distancing whilst I've been out walking.

TheSandman · 03/05/2020 11:05

Maybe it's just in supermarkets? Would it be a stupidly broad sexist assumption that women are more familiar with navigating their local supermarket than men are?

Yesterday I saw a man in his late 20s early 30s wheeling a pushchair with a 9 month? old baby, and a four/five year old at his side, push between two people much closer than 2m apart. (They had their backs to each other and may well have been unaware of each other presence.) It wasn't as if he was in a great hurry to get anywhere; I saw him later in the same shop dawdling around talking to one of the counter staff. He just didn't think to wait for a few moments. Or find another route. Just blithely took himself (unmasked) and his kids (also unmasked) between two total strangers (neither of whom... you guessed... it were wearing masks.) That is just... I don't know. Stupid?

Gfplux · 03/05/2020 14:39

Social distancing might be linked to socially aware or socially UNAWARE.
In the past BC I have come across people who are completely unaware of their surroundings. Perhaps we are now more focused and this strange behaviour is more obvious.

HeIenaDove · 03/05/2020 19:59

@TheSandman Its been men in my experience too. I posted a thread about it a while ago and got jumped on.

The punchline? I posted said thread on the Feminism board
