I wore a facemask doing my shopping today...

Yes, I initially felt self conscious, slightly embarrassed and generally a bit of an arse. However, the sky didn't fall in, nobody pointed and laughed at me and after a few minutes I'd gotten over the initial discomfort.
I know it's not a rule to wear one, but on the list of embarrassing things I've done in my lifetime, it's very near the bottom. 😷

I don’t wear one as I’m scared of people reaction.
In the beginning I heard people got photographed, laughed at, insulted and even attacked!
I’m vulnerable and I shalukd really wear one.
About 2 weeks ago I ventured out to my local Budgens and when I walked in the manager ( who is btw well know proper bitch among the staff) raised her eyebrows on me.
I half expected her to tell me to leave, really...

BeetrootRocks · 30/04/2020 13:45

DH and I have separately noticed that more and more people wearing masks are coming much closer.

It's probably psychological as they feel safer, but, that's a genuine side effect from our observation and not a good one.

timetest · 30/04/2020 13:46

I’ve worn one whilst at the supermarket. Many people do including the cashiers. It’s best to act as though you have the virus and by wearing a mask you are protecting others.

PurpleDaisies · 30/04/2020 13:48

I agree beetroot.

@Asvan
Yes you are absolutely spot on. Muslim women everywhere must be laughing when seeing covered faces, One virus and all is forgotten. I had the very same thought when all the mask/scarf debate started

amazedmummy · 30/04/2020 13:48

The first minister advised everyone up here to wear them so I ordered a couple yesterday.

Wonderbag · 30/04/2020 13:49

I don’t have any proper masks, but do wear a scarf or bikers tube thingie doubled over.
It makes sense to me and I think the shop staff appreciate the effort to protect them.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 30/04/2020 13:49

@timetest
If that were the case you should be at home isolating

Coffeecak3 · 30/04/2020 13:49

A forum on social media was asking how to wash the masks to kill the virus. Frankly if the virus is on your mask it will be in your nose and mouth too.
As previously stated masks are to protect others from you.

Astrid84 · 30/04/2020 13:50

Wearing a mask gives a minimum amount of protection to catching anything...

It does a better job of preventing you giving an illness to someone.

Masks outwith a care/hospital setting are pretty useless because people do not know how to wear them correctly and tend to use the wrong type (a dust mask will not protect you or prevent you giving a microscopic virus to someone)

I'm worried about those who feel wearing a mask or gloves etc think they are protected or preventing the spread however in actual fact these are the same people who then touch their mask, face, phone, door handle light switch etc. etc. and then take their gloves mask off the incorrect way and spread a virus anyway!

Please if you insist on wearing a mask, don't needlessly waste it by not following the correct procedures in wearing the thing!

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 30/04/2020 13:51

@Rathersexyfortysomethingblonde
If you are vulnerable a mask will not protect you, only the undiagnosed carrier from passing it

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 30/04/2020 13:52

OK, what's your point?

DroppedBoxxedRuth · 30/04/2020 13:52

Surely @PurpleDaisies limiting the droplets you send out through a sneeze/cough etc can be contained through a use of any old mask?

PurpleDaisies · 30/04/2020 13:53

I’m not coughing and sneezing when I go out.

june2007 · 30/04/2020 13:53

Was it flush to your face, was it covering your nose, did you make sure you were,t touching as you went round the shop, did you change it after 20 mins,? A lot of popel the answer to thease questions is no, hence why they are not all effective.

WorraLiberty · 30/04/2020 13:53

Yes you are absolutely spot on. Muslim women everywhere must be laughing when seeing covered faces, One virus and all is forgotten. I had the very same thought when all the mask/scarf debate started

Personally I'd credit them with more intelligence as trying to curb the spread of a deadly virus and religious modesty are two completely different things.

formerbabe · 30/04/2020 13:56

What makes me laugh and feel rage at the same time is people who shop in couples wearing masks...surely if you're so worried, then one of you could do the shopping and one stay at home and no, I don't believe all these couples have hidden disabilities which prevent them ever being left alone.

Topseyt · 30/04/2020 13:56

I've very much got used to seeing people in face masks when I go to the supermarket. I can't say I really even notice anymore, although I haven't worn one myself.

I think if I decide to wear one I will experiment with one of my lightweight winter scarves.

People sometimes seem to improvise, which is fine but the effects can be a little comical. My DD works in a small local supermarket in our town. One day a guy came in wearing a snorkel mask and proceeded to do his shopping like that, resembling the Man from Atlantis (for those of us old enough to remember that on the TV Blush ).

Now, I don't particularly care how I look or what other people think, but I think I would have drawn the line at that! Grin I'll stick with my scarf if I decide to go that route.

SoupDragon · 30/04/2020 13:57

I'll probably get slated for saying this but as a Muslim woman I find it quite funny to see how everyone else is now covering their faces too!

I am so glad you said this! I'm not Muslim but it crossed my mind as being amusing too :) however, not being Muslim I could never say it!

DroppedBoxxedRuth · 30/04/2020 13:58

@PurpleDaisies really? I usually don't know when a sneeze is going to happen. Well done you!

Bakedbrie · 30/04/2020 13:58

Bravo OP?! 🙄

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 30/04/2020 13:59

People wearing masks is about as useful as people walking around with a scarf over their faces i.e fucking pointless.

YgritteSnow · 30/04/2020 14:00

I bought us double layered cotton masks, with a pocket to fit a PM2.5 filters in. I have been wearing them whenever I am out in public - shops, post office etc, since end of May. I don't bother when out jogging or walking as I go somewhere secluded for that. No one looks twice where I am. It is only on MN that I see so much resistance to them.

Whataloadofshite · 30/04/2020 14:00

I wear a mask when I go into shops or another populated area. I take several pairs of nitrile gloves with me, and I change them when I go in or out of a shop, so as not to cross contaminate if I touch something. I don't give one single fuck what the reaction is.

YgritteSnow · 30/04/2020 14:01

People wearing masks is about as useful as people walking around with a scarf over their faces i.e fucking pointless

Why? Because the research and advice coming out now is very different to this.
