I wore a facemask doing my shopping today...

Yes, I initially felt self conscious, slightly embarrassed and generally a bit of an arse. However, the sky didn't fall in, nobody pointed and laughed at me and after a few minutes I'd gotten over the initial discomfort.
I know it's not a rule to wear one, but on the list of embarrassing things I've done in my lifetime, it's very near the bottom. 😷

I’m not coughing and sneezing when I go out.

I'm guessing you don't have hay fever then!

ravenmum · 30/04/2020 14:03

My deaf friends and colleagues are terrified that mask wearing will be come compulsory for the foreseeable future.
I was thinking about this the other day. I don't even know any deaf people apart from my mother (abroad), but I still downloaded the Google Live Transcribe app just in case Grin. When you speak, your words come up on the screen of your mobile phone; you can even adjust the font size to make it readable from a 2m distance!

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 30/04/2020 14:03

@YgritteSnow. Because so many people don't know how to wear them properly, constantly pulling at them, taking them down to speak etc. I'm watching someone do it right now. Pointless!

Kingjarvis · 30/04/2020 14:03

I don’t care if you wear one but I won’t. Ever. It’s pointless.

Hairdowntohisknees · 30/04/2020 14:03

No one takes any notice here any more. Loads of people wear them.

Abetes · 30/04/2020 14:04

I would wear one but can’t get hold of one. They have sold out everywhere so I don’t.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 30/04/2020 14:04

Wear a mask if you wish, it's fine.

It's the people who keep touching their masks and then touching everything else in the supermarket that I would like to send to room 101.

and I'm sorry Northensoullover, but that's some drivel there. Why would anyone want to be a role model?

FizzyPink · 30/04/2020 14:05

Here in London you’re definitely the odd one out if you’re not wearing one in the big supermarkets.

RUSU92 · 30/04/2020 14:06

I'll probably get slated for saying this but as a Muslim woman I find it quite funny to see how everyone else is now covering their faces too!

But you do realise that people aren’t judging Muslim women for covering their faces “because they look a bit silly”? They object to it because of the reasons already alluded to, that communication is impeded, especially in a customer facing role or when working as a teaching assistant for example. And because the covering of ones face and hair for religious reasons puts the onus of avoiding men’s gaze/attentions/violence onto women not men.

There’s nothing misogynistic about wearing a face mask to try and prevent CV. If only women were being told to wear masks so that men didn’t catch it you might be close!

applespearsbears · 30/04/2020 14:06

Lots of people wearing them here unfortunately they are the same people who then don't follow social distancing for the rest of us under a misguided belief they are 'safe' from the virus.

turnaroundbrighteyes · 30/04/2020 14:07

Utterly fed up of people in masks ignoring social distancing. Their choice to wear a mask, but unless I've said I'm happy that your mask is risk free and fitted correctly please stay 2m away!!!

Justmuddlingalong · 30/04/2020 14:11

I'm not looking for congratulations, bravos or good for yous. I was posting to encourage people who want to and are able to wear them, that it feels weird at first, but to just bite the bullet, if that's what they want to do. Sheesh 🙄

I'm utterly fed up of seeing discarded face masks and gloves littering the streets around here.

It's been so bad, the council and police have had to appeal to people to dispose of them properly.

underthelights · 30/04/2020 14:13

I'll wear one when I eventually have to go shopping. Thus far DH does the shopping and wears a suit for painting over his clothes, gloves, mask and goggles.

Lordfrontpaw · 30/04/2020 14:15

Well, the good thing about a mask - noone knows it's you! I have seen people trotting around with massive masks like the type you see in sci fi films (like the one in the pic). There was a couple sauntering around the supermarket with these on the other day.

EmilyBishopmyconfession · 30/04/2020 14:16

I'm in a city centre (UK) and the majority of customers have been wearing them (or a homemade version) whenever I've been in a supermarket, and have been for the last few weeks. No-one bats an eyelid here.

Rhianna1980 · 30/04/2020 14:17

I went out for a small food shop fir the first time in 6 weeks and I wore a mask and gloves, no one looked at me and plenty of other people wore one too. I felt very sad for the employees there who wore no gloves or masks. They are so brave risking their lives.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 30/04/2020 14:17

How are corona masks comparable with Muslim attire, what a daft comment.

otterturk · 30/04/2020 14:18

That second post is sickeningly sanctimonious

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 30/04/2020 14:18

I thought "the science" was that masks only prevent spread in any useful kind of way if everyone wears them, they are the cultural norm?

chomalungma · 30/04/2020 14:20

Silly question - but how long can you keep using the same mask for?

FoolsLemonTree · 30/04/2020 14:21

Lordfrontpaw There was a couple sauntering around the supermarket with these on the other day.

I think you're proving formerbabe's point!

What makes me laugh and feel rage at the same time is people who shop in couples wearing masks...surely if you're so worried, then one of you could do the shopping and one stay at home

Yes!! I've noticed this too. It's infuriating.

But you know it's those couples who can't do anything without each other, so overly cautious they have to be together all the time and obvs would be the first ones wearing masks! Two sets of plastic gloves for landfill, too.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 30/04/2020 14:21

I am working in supermarkets each week day, please stay the fuck away from me, you might be protected with your mask and gloves but I am not and it is not fair to come and stand directly next to me while you touch everything I am touching with your possibly germ filled gloves. Two meters please.

loobyloo1234 · 30/04/2020 14:22

I wear gloves and a mask to do my food shops too OP. Safety net and all that

redbigbananafeet · 30/04/2020 14:22

I got worryingly far through this thread before realising everyone meant the surgical type masks. I though you meant a ' face mask' as in a beauty face pack
