I wore a facemask doing my shopping today...

Yes, I initially felt self conscious, slightly embarrassed and generally a bit of an arse. However, the sky didn't fall in, nobody pointed and laughed at me and after a few minutes I'd gotten over the initial discomfort.
I know it's not a rule to wear one, but on the list of embarrassing things I've done in my lifetime, it's very near the bottom. 😷

Yip. The few times I've had to go shopping during lockdown, I've worn Mask and Gloves, and will continue for quite some time now.....

Oscarsdaddy · 01/05/2020 18:21

Unless forced to I’d never consider myself daft enough to fall for the crap that wearing a mask will help

Fair play to those that want to and feel safer but until it’s proven to have an effect I’ll pass

Mesoavocado · 01/05/2020 18:31

Can’t be arsed reading all of this but wearing a surgical mask is stupid and waste of supplies. By all means wear a fabric face mask IF if fits correctly and you wash after every use at 60 degrees min.

Gloves are exceptionally stupid in public. Likely idiotically stupid

YankeeinKingArthursCourt · 01/05/2020 18:55

"Proper" mask use by the public has been supported by the CDC , WHO and health authorities in other countries. The recommendation is for cloth / reusable masks and to save the single use for health professionals. PHE (& govt advisors) hesitant to advise public use primarily because of chronic shortage of PPE (& some concern about "improper" use). So PHE advice is based largely on lack of resources rather than strictly public health recommendations.

I wear one the minute I'm out of the house going anywhere an not risking it no way! Obvs dont wear a face mask in the garden though!!! Did feel embarrassed but dont now, I'm in london I have seen fully fledged gas mask from world wars gloves the lot! I dont think anyone gives a shit except the ones who aren't wearing anything, they always look at you like you have grown an extra head, stupid tossers! Grin

Patsyanna · 01/05/2020 19:10

I've been wearing a home made mask in the shops for a few weeks now. I am noticing more people are doing the same.

Hanywany · 01/05/2020 19:10

changemindI did that the other day, (forgot to wear mask as got distracted by daughter asking me too many bloody questions)going across to the shop for milk and bloody freaked right out all day over it especially when the woman stocking the shelves was coughing and spluttering all over the shop, disgusting cow!! I held my breath nearly all the way round the shop Confused

Tiggy321 · 01/05/2020 19:26

Pretty much everyone here (in Belgium) wears face masks for supermarket shopping and from Monday they become compulsory on public transport. I hate wearing one as it steaks up my glasses but looks like I’ll have to stick with it.

Devilinatwinset · 01/05/2020 19:50

OP, until I looked at the responses I thought you meant something like this

I wore a facemask doing my shopping today...
Devilinatwinset · 01/05/2020 19:52

Kind of in the spirit of 'I'm going out in my pjs & rollers & I don't give a flying fuck'

changemind · 01/05/2020 19:53

Some people Hanywany. I won't see a cough or sneeze in the same way ever again. I've always been germophobic though.

Aridane · 01/05/2020 19:53

I am so fucking frivolous - I thought you meant like a clay cleansing mask Blush

Vynalbob · 01/05/2020 19:58

I wear one when going into a shop (if no slots available). I'm in the minority in this area but it's not just protecting my family or protecting others so much as the question (jimedy cricket style) that keeps popping in my head....
If you get it the people that you've come into contact with may die because of you.

So I don't see it as selfish... In fact you could say I was indirectly.

I think @asvans quite correct until now even I would have said I prefer to see peoples faces (helmets Halloween masks anything) as a trusting thing...thats gone out of the window. Might become the new normal like in Chinese cities (was due to pollution).
Ah well what doesn't kill you... not in good taste scrap that thought.

chriskeene · 01/05/2020 20:02

I think it's a good idea

Runnerduck34 · 01/05/2020 20:16

I read the title and thought you'd forgotten to take a face pack off-duh!Blush

isthismylifenow · 01/05/2020 20:19

They are compulsory in my country now. The first few days of wearing I suppose most people felt a little uncomfortable and people weren't generally looking at other people, rather focusing on shelves etc Smile. We are only to wear cloth ones so that ppe is avail for medical uses.

Our schools are not back yet but it will be compulsory for the DC to wear them too. They are in the process of making up 46 million cloth masks to hand out two to each of the children at school.

There is such a variety of colours and patterns around. All of ours are in funky colours, just think as we have to wear th4yn, they may as well be bright and try to be as positive as possible.

itwaseverthus · 01/05/2020 20:36

I tried doing my supermarket shop with an N95 mask once. Felt faint from the lack of oxygen. Am sure it was on correctly but I can't breath properly in them. Nasty things.

isthismylifenow · 01/05/2020 20:38

The cloth masks are much more comfortable to wear than the ffp1 or n95 masks. I was using them before and I couldn't breathe, and as it kept moving up, couldn't see either.

Chillipeanuts · 01/05/2020 20:45

HelenaDove

“But im sure they will be online as soon as they can buying masks”

So the more people who can buy and wear them, the better for people who can’t, surely?

HeIenaDove · 01/05/2020 21:05

Im one of those who dont shop online.

keffie12 · 01/05/2020 21:29

Plenty of people around who do wear one, as I do too. Even if there is no scientific evidence they help it sure as hell reminds people of the 2 metre rule as you notice it.

Northernsoullover · 01/05/2020 21:53

If your glasses steam up try covering them in shaving foam and polish it off with a tissue. I don't know if it works but I'll be trying it tomorrow..

Hanywany · 01/05/2020 22:02

changemind I am exactly the same if anyone sniffles, sneezes, coughs, clears their throat! I'm the same with my kids though I constantly check temperatures, and if they sneeze or cough I ask why!! I think I might be losing my mind Grin

Gbtch · 01/05/2020 22:09

I wear one ( reuseable made at home) every time I shop to protect others from anything I might have. It would be nice if others did that for me.

NoobThebrave · 01/05/2020 22:24

By all means wear what ever makes you comfortable but remember it doesn’t give you superpowers. The number of people in sainsos wearing gloves and a mask but using their phone, feeding their child snacks, adjusting mask constantly, flicking hair etc. The gloves are no cleaner than your hands once you have touched something and constantly adjusting the mask or still touching your face makes it pointless. Also taking it all off by your car and slinging it on seat without washing hands makes it all a little pointless.....slinging it on the floor just makes a further hazard Angry.
