I wore a facemask doing my shopping today...

Yes, I initially felt self conscious, slightly embarrassed and generally a bit of an arse. However, the sky didn't fall in, nobody pointed and laughed at me and after a few minutes I'd gotten over the initial discomfort.
I know it's not a rule to wear one, but on the list of embarrassing things I've done in my lifetime, it's very near the bottom. 😷

If we have to wear one, will the government provide them or will we be told what type of mask we have to buy?

changemind · 01/05/2020 03:46

Pretty normal here too (city). Although I seemed to be the only one at first and people did stare at that point. Some still seem to feel the mask wearers are OTT paranoid. I suppose just well who cares what crowds of strangers think really. I forgot to do mine for a delivery, guy right in front of me and freaked out all day over it lol

changemind · 01/05/2020 03:51

Nat699 the government will tell us to stick a bit of paper over our face. No way will they provide them.If u want good protection buy a reusable nanofibre.

Hercwasonaroll · 01/05/2020 06:51

I'm concerned about them becoming compulsory. Currently I get by with a lot of lip reading and also knowing the voices of those I'm close to. Compulsory masks would make it very difficult to communicate for me.

I'm a teacher too and I really don't think I'd cope in a room of masked students. I wouldn't be able to hear them well at all.

ptumbi · 01/05/2020 07:40

Nat6999 - the government don't even buy enough for the NHS frontline workers; do you think they will buy and distribute masks to the general public? Or don't you think it's more likely that we'll be required by new laws to wear them when outside, told to buy our own, then find we can't get any, then we'll be fined for going out with out one... Hmm?

Hippywannabe · 01/05/2020 08:19

Cloth masks are available cheaply now on ebay, there are a gazillion tutorials online on how to make one from bandanas, scarves or an old teeshirt, tie a scarf around your face, you can find a covering at home fairly easily.
I doubt that the government will be insisting on a particular brand or design with a penalty fine in place if you aren't wearing that one.
Boris has pretty much said we will need them so people do have time to think about how they can do this.

KundaliniRising · 01/05/2020 09:15

Having anything over my mouth triggers a panic attack, thanks to exh. So i just had to get over it in order to wear my cambridge mask. Dd is has asthma and she also had to wear her mask in to get used to it. So there are ways of getting used to wearing them.

Peoples ability to talk themselves out of a simple step is astounding.

As for keeping them clean of viruses, just put the fucking thing in the freezer ffs.

Really it is not rocket science.

KundaliniRising · 01/05/2020 09:20

However HelenaDove i am with you on this.... Try directing your ire at the people who kept going on flights to fucking ski trips in Northern Italy AFTER the virus was already a well known fact.
The people who kept boarding cruise ships AFTER the virus was already a well known fact.

The people who drove to second homes.

Oh and heres another group you can direct your ire at instead. The stupid twonks gathering on Westminster Bridge on a Thursday night.

hippywannabe

Bought 10 on Wowcher for family, very cheaply so was dubious.
Arrived just 4 days later, very pleasantly surprised. Robust, good quality, excellent fit. They’re all black and I wish I’d waited a couple of days for the “fun” (seriously 😁) colours option to be released, but you can’t have everything.
(Suppose “fun” might be more appealing to kids though, so fair enough)

Xenia · 01/05/2020 09:41

My son made a large black one yesterday from material scraps. His twin bought a pack of them back in February actually so I have had one in my pocket and worn it a few times for ages but I feel less safe not more so in it so tend not to wear it and I do not support the state making them compulsory (which I hope they won't). I also bought a plastic mask which completely covers the face - scuba diving thing but it is very hot and uncomfortable.

It may be when flights are more common we might all prefer those B&Q builders' masks some doctors have been buying at B&Q as they filter more out.

VenusTiger · 01/05/2020 10:09

@BigChocFrenzy @PestymcPestFace the GOVERNMENT is only 4 months old I said - not how long have the Tories been in power.

Northernsoullover · 01/05/2020 10:17

I don't think the state will need to make them compulsory. You don't need to wear one if you aren't in close proximity to another person. Businesses such as supermarkets, shops and transport providers are quite within their rights to refuse custom or entry to people who don't want to wear one.
I just don't get the resistance. Its the only defence we have if we want to resume any semblance of a normal life.

Hippywannabe · 01/05/2020 11:06

@Chillipeanuts my Mum(almost 80 and bored!) is currently making me some cartoon character ones. I work in a Primary school and think, if we are wearing them, at least they will be less frightening.

changemind · 01/05/2020 11:10

Oh @KundaliniRising had to say that freezing will only preserve the virus. So I have read, probably don't just take my word for it. I haven't really been over careful in that respect but washing with soap or leaving it alone for several days to a week depending on whether it has polyester or similar on it, that should let the virus degrade.

changemind · 01/05/2020 11:13

Also re ur dds asthma. You can buy super thin and breathable nanofibre cloth N99 type, no respirator valve thingys

Kokeshi123 · 01/05/2020 13:53

I think we should all have become a bit suspicious of the advice not to wear masks bearing in mind that we were told "The general public should not wear masks because they don't know how to handle them properly" AND at the same time "But you should wear a mask if someone in your family is sick".

What are we supposed to believe---that people suddenly miraculously develop mask-handling skills the moment that their hubby/wifey gets sick?

Also, if even the powers that be have admitted that people will have to wear masks if they have a sick family member, would it not be more sensible to educate people about correct mask wearing and get them to practice on a day-to-day basis when the stakes are lower, rather than telling them to avoid masks?

HeIenaDove · 01/05/2020 14:11

Cant wait to see mask wearing during football. Especially when they tackle.

HeIenaDove · 01/05/2020 14:43

Food bank usage in houses with children has increased 120% among people who dont go on ski trips or cruises!!

But im sure they will be online as soon as they can buying masks.

changemind · 01/05/2020 15:38

I am seriously in the red from all this coronavirus

Raaaa · 01/05/2020 15:41

I wouldn't wear one but I'm not gunna laugh at others that chose to. Just wanna get the shopping and go

PestymcPestFace · 01/05/2020 17:48

Oh HeIenaDove maybe some places have already arranged to pop free masks into food boxes. When a community works together it is amazing what can be done.

Jack80 · 01/05/2020 17:52

I will when and if the government says we have to, each to their own I won't judge anyone

dementedma · 01/05/2020 17:52

Wore one for the first time today. I lasted 15 minutes before had to take it off as breathing was getting very ragged. As an asthmatic, its going to be a challenge!

Michellelovesizzy · 01/05/2020 17:58

Its just a normal site round here... no 1 gives a shit
