International travel to the US

DBML · 30/04/2020 00:24

Trump is looking at international travel. The US is considering testing for coronavirus on the plane.
He’s acknowledged much of Florida’s business comes from international travel, particularly from South America.
Theme parks and attractions looking to open in phases, with some restrictions initially.
America are clearly keen to get their economy up and running at whatever cost.

@LittleRen

Good question. I suspect testing would have to be done at the airport wouldn’t it. And the precautions taken on the flight. I suspect mask would be a requirement...which means no meals or drinks? The airlines are going to be working on how they will manage this, so it will be interesting to hear what they decide on doing.

@HoldMyLobster

Interesting. So it can be done.

LOL - that's the least detailed reopening plan for a state I've seen. They're clearly not committing to anything.

DBML · 30/04/2020 15:36

@HoldMyLobster

It’s a start 🙂

I’m not expecting to go next week. I’ve got three months to see what happens

Triglesoffy · 30/04/2020 15:42

Where did you get this information from OP? What’s your source?

MotheringShites · 30/04/2020 15:44

It’d be so nice to have just one thread that was full of positivity. We all know the reality of the situation but life is crap enough without being able to plan and hope and dream of good times lovely happy things in the future.

I am going to Florida in the summer, I’m going to sun myself and swim and drink pina coladas and take my kids to the water parks. Can’t wait!

BertieDrapper · 30/04/2020 15:44

We were due to fly next Friday to Orlando... so disappointed we can't go. Thankfully DD is too young to notice!

Even if trump started accepting travellers doesn't mean you would still be able to fly... the FCO would have to agree it was safe. Personally I don't see the point in us all sitting indoors for months on end just to then open the borders to international travel straight away. Your just asking for it to be spread around again surely!

DBML · 30/04/2020 15:50

@BertieDrapper

I’m sorry about your holiday.

To be honest, I hope a lot will be different in 12 weeks time. I live in hope 🤞

I cant imagine champing at the bit to come to the US. Our government at federal and state levels are failing us dreadfully, and based on the absolutely uneducated bullshit our president disseminates on a daily basis, a vast swath of the population does not take this virus seriously or take proper precautions.

It is not getting better here. Our numbers are rising every day, and the federal quarantine order expires today, giving individual state governments the leeway to extend or end quarantine on their own. Facebook is showing the majority of shops/businesses in my area ready to open tomorrow with scant precautions in place.

It's not safe here for my family yet, much less yours. A holiday simply isn't worth it.

Plus, florida at that time of year is a muggy, disgusting place.

Inniu · 30/04/2020 15:53

I think the requirement to quarantine for 14 days on arrival in most countries will make travelling internationally for holidays difficult for quite some time.

It would be 14 days quarantine on arrival in Florida, if you have a Villa with your own pool that could still be enjoyable but no parks, beaches, eating out or shopping malls. Then another 14 days quarantine when you get home. No going good shopping, work only possible if WFH etc

Realistically 5 weeks needed for a one week holiday.

DBML · 30/04/2020 15:53

@Triglesoffy
It was during the Trump/DeSantis meeting at the Oval Office.

@DoubleNegativePanda

I live in Florida for 5-8 weeks every summer. I’m familiar with the heat and humidity and I love it. I suffer with dry skin, so I am very comfortable when I visit.

A lot can happen in 12 weeks.

OP posts:
DBML · 30/04/2020 15:57

@Inniu

We could do that if it came to it as we stay for longer than your average holiday.
I’d rather not, but if that was the only option I would.

@MotheringShites

Yes! That’s all I want...a few shreds of hope and some positivity.
If my holiday doesn’t happen it doesn’t happen, but I’m sick of reading the doom and gloom.

This summer I will be canoeing through the mangroves in Tavernier. I’ll see a crocodile and poop my pants! But then when we get back to the apartment, we’ll laugh about it and have a cocktail. We’ll hire a boat and take it to Indian Key for a picnic and we’ll also pop along to Islamorada to snorkel at Alligator Reef.
It’ll be wonderful 😍

@DBML, thanks you for the link, I guess it is a start, but not much detail.

TBH I do not anticipate much improvement in US stats, until {res Trump is replaced.
My trip to the US in May, fully paid for last December has now been postponed to May 2021, for which I am grateful.
Insurance did not cover anything related to Corona virus, and I cannot get a refund.
I cannot really see International travel being established until the end of this year, from my area, to be frank, but I wish you well with your plans.
My plans include New York, the worst affected area, and with Trump in charge I do not anticipate much improvement begore the end of2020.
I am watching with interest to see the outcome, by early next year as I do not believe there be a vaccine available before March or so, next year.
Good luck with your plans.

Rottnest · 30/04/2020 16:21

@DoubleNegativePanda, following what I am seeing on the News on American TV channels I absolutely agree with you.

Trump has no idea what to do, DR Fauci for president in my book!

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/04/2020 16:24

A Cuomo/Fauci ticket gets my vote.

DBML · 30/04/2020 16:38

That’s awful news @Rottnest
Why didn’t you get a refund from the carrier do you mind me asking? That’s appalling.

Yes, New York really has been hit terribly hard hasn’t it. So very sad. Have you been before? It’s such a wonderful place. Hopefully they’ll get a handle on it soon...it appears to be starting to go in the right direction doesn’t it?

I think had I booked New York, I would have delayed too. I’m counting on the Keys being a lot less busy...where we go at least.
We’ll see, but for now I just really need to stay hopeful.

When you do eventually get to go on your vacation, I sincere hope the amazing time you have makes up for the disappointment of the cancellation. Book something extra special to really look forward to x

OP posts:
Fuss · 30/04/2020 16:41

I should be in California now. It's been rescheduled for September but I'm not getting excited again as I'm unconvinced of the possibility yet.

I suspect it will eventually be rescheduled to this time next year but I live in hope.

Goatymcgoaty · 30/04/2020 16:42

I see little point in thinking about going on holiday until coronavirus is insurable. Would people really book / go knowing that if something covid related happened they wouldn’t be insured? Particularly to the US...

Fuss · 30/04/2020 16:47

Sometimes people need something to focus on, and if that is the slim possibility that life will have returned to some sort of normal by that point keeps them going then why not?

RedToothBrush · 30/04/2020 16:52

If the UK travel advice remains to advise against all but essential travel, then EVEN IF YOU HAVE PANDEMIC COVERAGE on your policy, your travel insurance will not be valid for covid-19 (or anything else) due to the FCO advice.

You would need specialist cover which has explicitly says you can travel when the FCO advice against travel.

Rottnest · 30/04/2020 16:54

@MrsTerryPratchett, Yes Cuomo/Fauci, a much better team than what is available at present, for the next election!!

@DBL, Everything was booked with a private tour company and the monies distributed already to the venues in US. So here's to next year.

Best of luck with your plans!

DBML · 30/04/2020 16:56

@RedToothBrush

I’m not an idiot. I know the conditions for travel.

This is a thread about hope, not for people to try to piss someone’s parade.
