International travel to the US

DBML · 30/04/2020 00:24

Trump is looking at international travel. The US is considering testing for coronavirus on the plane.
He’s acknowledged much of Florida’s business comes from international travel, particularly from South America.
Theme parks and attractions looking to open in phases, with some restrictions initially.
America are clearly keen to get their economy up and running at whatever cost.

We are due to go to Maine at the end of July to celebrate DT’s 21st birthdays and their graduation from Uni. We will probably cancel. I don’t think international non essential travel will start again this year and the US don’t have control on COVID. Trump doesn’t get it at all.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/04/2020 18:20

by the time I got to the car I was soaked through. It was as if I’d jumped into a pool

Amazing, isn't it? Grin I actually love the Florida rainstorms - and at least they blow over quickly - but they can certainly be more like a falling solid than a liquid

Then again I was on the gulf coast during Irma ... now that really was rain

Teaandbiscuits88 · 30/04/2020 18:21

We were supposed to be heading to Orlando tomorrow!

Oh well. We’ve rescheduled for next April and added an extra week on too 😉 I’m having fun replanting. If it doesnt happen then, I will just postpone again.

I will get there - and in the meantime I shall daydream about being there!

Teaandbiscuits88 · 30/04/2020 18:21

Replanning not replanting!

Bearbehind · 30/04/2020 18:22

I’m confused about the FCO point.

Surely this thread is about having a bit of hope that we might be able to travel again soon.

It’s not saying that people will try and go on holiday if and when the FCO advice is still to not travel

Which in turn makes the insurance point moot.

I’m certainly hoping that from around August / September things will be heading towards whatever the new ‘normal’ will be and holidays will be possible

Pomegranatepompom · 30/04/2020 18:25

@DBML we’ve Florida cooked for August too. I’ve not cancelled anything yet. I’m hoping to get mine and my DH/DC antibodies checked next week as part of a research study.

DBML · 30/04/2020 18:27

@MotheringShites

Incredible aren’t they! I’d rather that though than all day cold drizzle!

@Puzzledandpissedoff

Lol! Falling solid! Exactly. Omg! I can’t imagine what it would have been like to be in a hurricane...I think that might be a step too far for me! You can still see all the Irma damage over there. It wasn’t an insignificant storm!

@Teaandbiscuits88

That’s the way to do it! Add on time next year and make it really count.
Have fun replanning and replanting your holiday!! 😊

We booked to go to the West Coast USA in Late July, Early August. We found out last week it was cancelled and have rebooked for 2022

SeasonFinale · 30/04/2020 18:30

I think this is a prime example of I will do what I want and I don't care about others. You want your holiday and I can j errata d the hope in that. However as a second spike is suspected why would you put yourself amongst masses of people to potentially catch it and then bring a fresh wave back with you.

Unless you are prepared to have your holiday and then sit in a quarantine centre in the states before returning.

DBML · 30/04/2020 18:32

@Pomegranatepompom

How did you manage to get that done you lucky thing! Very interesting- you’ll have to let us know how you get on.

Well, if we get to go, then I hope you have a wonderful time xx

@Bearbehind

That’s what I don’t get. I wouldn’t travel with an advisory not to do so in place. It’s just focusing on a spec of hope rather than descending deep into a depression. This is a horrible time and anyway we can get through it is welcome.

Testing on the plane?? How does that work. It takes 24 hours to get the results at the minute. And if one person tests positive does everyone get quarantined??

You can get results in five minutes with certain tests approved by the FDA. Likely everyone would be checked before boarding and if you are positive you won’t be allowed on the flight? Seems to be the most efficient way.

Emirates does a test that gives results in 10
minutes: www.cntraveler.com/story/emirates-is-giving-rapid-coronavirus-tests-to-passengers-before-boarding/

Bearbehind · 30/04/2020 18:34

I don’t see it that way at all

Unless we are back to some semblance of normal in 3 or 4 months, the threat of Coronavirus will be nothing compared to a completely trashed economy

We have to find a way of living with it, and that includes a way of keeping the tourism and hospitality industry going

HoldMyLobster · 30/04/2020 18:35

I'm in Maine and I feel much safer here than I would in the UK. We have a very low rate of cases, hospitalisations and deaths here. 1,056 confirmed cases, 52 deaths (more than half in nursing homes). Our death rate per 1m population is just below 4, compared to the UK which is just below 400. We have over 400 ventilators available of which 8 are being used.

You can see the plan for reopening Maine here
www.maine.gov/governor/mills/news/governor-mills-presents-safe-gradual-plan-restart-maines-economy-2020-04-28

Hotels are projected to reopen to non-Maine residents on 1st July if the preceding stages of reopening do not push up virus infections.

Whether or not they really will open is not yet known, and whether or not international flights will be happening safely is another big question.

As a Maine resident whose family is dependent on tourism revenue I am very conflicted, as you can imagine...

Pomegranatepompom · 30/04/2020 18:35

I’m fully expecting to cancel - nice to dream
a bit longer

Bearbehind · 30/04/2020 18:36

The doom mongers just want to make this as bad as possible 🙁

DBML · 30/04/2020 18:36

@SeasonFinale

I see it more as...in 12 weeks we may be in a completely different position. We may be in a position to take a holiday. It may be deemed safe enough to do so.
No point cancelling and losing money at that point if the world says it’s ok to go.

I would understand your point entirely if I was taking my private jet tomorrow against advice.

I don’t have a private jet btw.

Flights aren’t just for holidays; I am looking forward to the start of flights so I can literally see my family again.

Pomegranatepompom · 30/04/2020 18:36

@DBML where I work. I’ll let you know. Quite a few people I work with had very bad symptoms, I had mild some mild as did DD.

Teaandbiscuits88 · 30/04/2020 18:36

@bearbehind excellent response there.

@DBML exactly! Got to look for the light at the end of the tunnel, even if you don’t know how long the tunnel is.

I’ve tried to explain Florida storms to my in laws who are coming with us for the first time...I don’t think anything will prepare them for the sudden deluge that appears from nowhere!

DBML · 30/04/2020 18:38

@Bearbehind

I get that feeling. It’s almost as if some people are enjoying it.

Oh I’m so sorry for you. That must be an awful position to be in. I hope you get to see them soon 🤞

Fingers crossed for positive news that you have immunity! Keep us posted x

@DBML I hope you have an amazing time whether you get there in August or have to postpone. We've booked to go in September 2021 and I can't wait - I need something to look forward to!

MadisonAvenue · 30/04/2020 18:43

@cjpark Can I ask who you booked with? Our California holiday with Virgin hasn’t been cancelled yet and it’s just 3 weeks away.

DBML · 30/04/2020 18:43

@Teaandbiscuits88

People tried to explain the Florida storm to me about 15 years ago. I bought a lovely Disney brolly to take with us.

Brolly lasted all of about ten seconds.

But does anyone find that you get awful hot and sweaty under those ponchos! Half the time I end up taking them off and giving up anyway.

Another thing about Florida I love...the anole lizards 🦎 They are so adorable.

Florida negatives - Floridian drivers are nuts. Just nuts.
