International travel to the US

Trump is looking at international travel. The US is considering testing for coronavirus on the plane.
He’s acknowledged much of Florida’s business comes from international travel, particularly from South America.
Theme parks and attractions looking to open in phases, with some restrictions initially.
America are clearly keen to get their economy up and running at whatever cost.

@Rottnest

What a shame. But all my best to you too! Hope next year makes for a wonderful holiday!!!

This is a thread about hope, not for people to try to piss someone’s parade

Thats it completely.
It's pointless thinking about a lot of things in life, but it's human nature to do it. And if mentally planning a trip is helpful then absolutely do it. I don't think any of us who have trips booked are under any illusions, but it is something to look forward to, a light at the end of the tunnel if you will.

DBML · 30/04/2020 17:02

@Fuss

Thank you, that’s exactly it. Xx

Me too. There are some who seemingly dont want anyone to go anywhere or do anything. A holiday in the UK is just not the same. Sorry - it just isnt and the rain....

I will be ready to book something (refundable of course) as soon as airlines start flying. Thinking of Italy as its one of my favourite places. But literally will look at almost anything that has a bit of glamour.

RedToothBrush · 30/04/2020 17:04

I'm sorry you don't understand insurance.

I'm trying to make you (and everyone else) get the right information rather than 'piss on people's parade'. So I will I'll 'piss on anyone's parade' who spouts shite about insurance because other people might think they are covered when they are not and that might have serious consequences.

If you want me to piss on your parade, I'll point out you are off your rocker to want to travel when the FCO is still trying to repatriate people stranded after governments brought in lockdowns and commercial flights ceased. And I'll point out even if you have insurance the risk of Trump suddenly doing something irratic like shutting borders and trapping you or the higher risk of getting covid in the states due to laxer lockdowns (and then not being permitted to fly or being stuck in quarratine for weeks on your return).

A fools hope isn't keeping hope alive. Its a denial of reality which at some point you'll have to face up to.

HTH.

RedToothBrush · 30/04/2020 17:05

Oh and I can mentality plan a trip in the future too. Remembering reality does not stop you doing that.

Just not on ridicilous timescales just so i can keep up some bullshit fantasy.

DBML · 30/04/2020 17:06

@RedToothBrush

Booooooooooooooo!!!

Of course it would be lovely if everyone’s holidays could go ahead. I think it’s helpful to be hopeful but also realistic. It’s not kind to get hopes up when we really do not know!

I love Florida and especially Orlando. I know they rely on tourism but I suspect they are hoping for national tourists first. Many surrounding states holiday there.

bananaskinsnomnom · 30/04/2020 17:12

Let me join the Club of Positivity! I’m another one with an America trip booked, though not till late October with bestie - a couple of big cities (thank god we decided against New York!) and a week down in Orlando!

We have decided to focus on the positive and assume we are going because we can’t assume otherwise right now. The Disney hotel and tickets were booked through Disney itself, and right now they are considering themselves open and moving people who were much closer. Lovely on the phone but they need to sort out people travelling in the next month which is completely understandable. Flights and other 2 hotels with BA (oh god!) but try getting through on the phones to them - they’re only interested in those meant to fly in the next couple of weeks, if that long. It’s too soon to call our holiday basically

So for now, we are staying positive! It’s nice to have it to focus on. This was a big deal - certainly for me, so many friends around me with weddings to organise or starting their own families, announcing surprise trips on Facebook - this was my big thing to look forward to. The situation sucks.

We have kept planning, we are realistic though. We booked a couple of Disney restaurants this week as the app allowed us to. The Disney tickets have extended till September next year which is good. The next opportunity to go though (that currently we can both do) would be right in the midst of American spring break, or the dead heat of summer. We will rebook if needs be and make the most of it, but I’m keeping the Faith!

bananaskinsnomnom · 30/04/2020 17:13

Just to add, I obviously will not go if the travel warnings are in place, or if it is declared far to dangerous. I’m not an idiot I promise - just thinking hope.

DBML · 30/04/2020 17:14

I don’t get why some people get so angry. If I hope to go away, it doesn’t make a difference to them. I mad I get stuck in Florida that’s my problem. If I’m bankrupt with medical bills on my return, again my problem.

But mention that you’re looking forward to something on Mumsnet and by God, there are some people who get their arse in their hand and can’t wait to drag you down to where they are at.

Do you know what this calls for? Chocolate!

(And yes, I know it can lead to obesity, heart disease, diabetes, limb amputation through poor healing, low self esteem and even migraines).

@bananaskinsnomnom

You have a long while yet! I hope you get to go and it all sounds like a wonderful trip!

Interesting figures in that flgov.com link:

Projected hospitalisations with 3 months of social distancing 185,184
Actual hospitalisations so far 2,111 (or 9.8 per 100,000)

Given that cases and admissions also appear to be dropping substantially, maybe late summer holidays to Florida aren't such a pipedream after all (which would upset the doom-mongers no end)

Schuyler · 30/04/2020 17:38

I’m not angry. No offence but I care much more about my plans this summer than yours. Grin

I do think it’s naive to think many tourists (maybe not every single one) won’t expect the British government to bail them out if they get stuck abroad.

DBML · 30/04/2020 17:42

@Schuyler

None taken!

I hope you can rearrange and that eventually you have a wonderful time xx

AstiPooMante · 30/04/2020 17:47

Can someone clarify this for me please - if the fco advice is not to travel but the flight is still on, can we claim the cost back on our travel insurance?

We have flights booked and accommodation for Miami area. None of us want to go now, because we understand we wouldn’t be covered on insurance should one of us contract COVID. But if the flight is still on we won’t get our money back.

Schuyler · 30/04/2020 17:48

Whatever happens, obviously it’d be great if we could travel because the airline and travel industry is in tatters and it’s hugely affecting people and economy. Realistically, do I think it’ll happen? Honestly, I’m not sure but nobody really is. Hopefully we can all make the best out of it.

I’m sure you’ll have a great holiday, even if it’s not the exact date you expected. Sounds fab! Florida rain is insane but it’s not like the rain here.

HelloToMyKitty · 30/04/2020 17:58

It's not safe here for my family yet, much less yours. A holiday simply isn't worth it

Username checks out.

Florida coronavirus numbers are actually comparatively good, and I expect they will actually be reopening in short order, DeSantis was saying a matter of weeks not months so it could really be happening!!

Weston14 · 30/04/2020 17:58

Due to head to New Orleans in September. Trip of a lifetime and because of a couple of different life factors if it gets cancelled I don't think I'll be getting there anytime soon Sad Got my fingers crossed but unconvinced. What does everyone think? I've not been following the news in the states.

HelloToMyKitty · 30/04/2020 17:59

To add that restaurants and retail outlets are opening in Florida within the week in most counties, so if that goes well (Sweden shows it can) then expect further openings.

hopeishere · 30/04/2020 18:06

Testing on the plane?? How does that work. It takes 24 hours to get the results at the minute. And if one person tests positive does everyone get quarantined??

DBML · 30/04/2020 18:09

@Schuyler

Tell me about it!
We were at Epcot and decided to make a run for the car as we were parked relatively close to the front of the car park. It was just starting to spot...so we ran...then it suddenly hammered down, each raindrop stung! It hit so hard and by the time I got to the car I was soaked through. It was as if I’d jumped into a pool. I had to wring out my hair and sit on our ponchos (which had been conveniently left in the car). We then had to sit and wait it out as you couldn’t see more than a couple of meters ahead, so it just wasn’t safe to drive. Lasted about 15 minutes in total, but wow...and the lightening!!!

DD was in Florida last September. She's been to Disney LA with us many times so kind of got used to sunny weather. She face timed me hiding in a shop on main street in a monsoon heh. The park itself was reasonable, but the pay off from that is the weather can be tricky.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/04/2020 18:14

I do think it’s naive to think many tourists (maybe not every single one) won’t expect the British government to bail them out if they get stuck abroad

I agree, but then there were people in France during the ash cloud expecting help, and with the best will in the world, if you can't get yourself back from much of France you probably shouldn't be leaving the house

If the fco advice is not to travel but the flight is still on, can we claim the cost back on our travel insurance?

TBH I wouldn't expect the flight to go ahead at all if the FCO say no, but whether they're likely to say that probably depends on the date of travel

MotheringShites · 30/04/2020 18:17

Oh I love a dramatic Florida summer storm. We’ve been caught out on a bike ride in the most amazing downpour! I am so happy sitting on a balcony and watching a thunder storm come in.
