How do you sanitise your shopping?

Do you wash your tins with soap for 20 seconds? What do you do about bread in paper or meat or plastic cartons? And what about fresh fruit and vegetables?

...and where I live (Ireland) we are not getting much in the way of avvcvaccnes yet and the rates are remaining stubbornly high...

theDudesmummy · 03/04/2021 18:56

*vaccines obv!

beela · 03/04/2021 19:03

I solve this problem by not licking any of the outer packaging of the food.

FlyingBurrito · 03/04/2021 19:07

@toolatetooearly

aaah wait, this is an inexplicably resurrected year-old thread! I presume no one still does this??
Apparently they do despite no evidence that there has ever been any transmission directly from surfaces

I do worry that some people aren't going to cope when things are back to normal

Sparklingbrook · 03/04/2021 19:46

I don't think bleach should be around food. And it makes me heave, all those bleach fumes can't be good.

I still believe a year on that if this was something we genuinely needed to do (like mask wearing/social distancing/handwashing) then they would have added it to the list.

dividedwefall · 03/04/2021 19:49

Yes chlorine/bleach fumes damage your lungs. That's the last thing you want if you are worried a respiratory disease that attacks your lungs.

theDudesmummy · 03/04/2021 19:56

I don't use bleach, just specfic antiviral surface spray

Remmy123 · 03/04/2021 20:15

Totally stupid, unnecessary and completely bonkers doing this!!

RaspberryCoulis · 03/04/2021 23:23

I cannot believe people are still doing this after A WHOLE YEAR.

Batshittery just about covers it.

AcornAutumn · 03/04/2021 23:24

@draughtycatflap

I photograph all my food then throw it away and eat the prints. Maybe a bit OTT but best to be safe.
😂😂
AcornAutumn · 03/04/2021 23:25

"Fresh fruit gets dunked in soapy water and dried."

Okay, that's new to me.

XenoBitch · 03/04/2021 23:27

I did at the start. I was terrified... didn't leave the house for ages and then when I did, stripped and showered afterwards. Wiped my dog down with wipes too, and didn't open post for days.
It was making me mentally ill... so I stopped... and I also stopped watching the news. Was also aware that I would probably kill my budgie with all the chemicals I was using too. Now I am back to my filthy self. Only thing I am concerned about now is the lack of colds. I am worried about my immune system.

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 03/04/2021 23:28

I've followed 99% of the government's rules. We are not told or advised to sanitise our shopping. I don't and never have.

espressoontap · 03/04/2021 23:30

We don't. Just wash our hands after putting it away.

Washing eggs and using anti-bac wipes. Jesus Christ.

Ferrylights · 03/04/2021 23:30

The world has gone fucking mad if people are washing their shopping ...ffs get some bloody perspective ! Do you bleach your post when it pops through the letterbox ?

Quit4me · 03/04/2021 23:35

Just don’t lick the packaging and you’ll be grand

I sent a parcel to a friend that took a week to get to her.. and then she put it in "quarantine" for 3 days. Made no sense to me at all. FFS open the parcel and wash your hands. The contents are fine! Like a muppet, I sent it First Class too.
OliveTree75 · 04/04/2021 05:55

I don't know how people find the time or the will to do this tbh. Just wash your hands

CoffeeWithCheese · 04/04/2021 11:41

I have a priest and choir of nuns chained up in the cupboard under the stairs who do a full nice long 5 hour Mass over any groceries I buy. Then I marinate the food in holy water and drive a stake through its heart before praying to Dettol, the blessed saint of Anti Bacterial Wipes before I eat it.

MNOverinvestor · 04/04/2021 11:46

I don’t, and have just done hand washing and worn masks. (I’ve taken this approach since last March. I live in a city, have visited supermarkets regularly, occasionally had to use public transport for work/medical appointments and been fine.) Apart from people with low immunity has isolating shopping ever been part of official advice?

joysexreno · 04/04/2021 11:49

So you are breaking the law on having people in your home? Someone needs to get the police round to your place ASAP
RaspberryCoulis · 04/04/2021 11:54

Never.

I think there were a couple of "medical experts" like Dr Hillary Jones who said that it was a way of reducing risk. But what he didn't say was that it was taking the teeny tiniest risk in the world and making it an even teeny tinier risk.

And of course if you ask an expert in virus and bacteria whether bleaching your shopping is going to remove bacteria or viruses, they're going to say yes. Because it does.

But whether it's worthwhile precaution is an other question which they weren't asked. The anxious latched onto it though, and cleared the shelves of those horrendous single-use wipes and bottles of Milton.
