How do you sanitise your shopping?

Do you wash your tins with soap for 20 seconds? What do you do about bread in paper or meat or plastic cartons? And what about fresh fruit and vegetables?

I take bags to the shed where I have a grocery cleaning station. I put face mask and gloves on and start with the tins. I wash the tins in soapy water. Everything that is water proof goes to soapy water. Fruit and vegetables are washed thoroughly in slightly soapy water.
After finishing washing I remove mask and gloves and put them in our fire place. All the material I can burn I put there too.

Finally I put my clothes in the washing machine and take a shower.

Grobagsforever · 09/04/2020 19:35

I just burn it as soon as it comes into the house

Mascotte · 09/04/2020 19:44

@kingis this thread is so mad I don’t know if you’re joking

Quarantina · 09/04/2020 19:44

Do you then quarantine the contents of said post and parcels for a further 24 hours after they've been opened?

Why would this be necessary?

raviolidreaming · 09/04/2020 19:46

@kingisthis thread is so mad I don’t know if you’re joking

I can't tell either 🥴

JassyRadlett · 09/04/2020 19:48

I don’t. I’m not in a vulnerable group and the reality is that when lockdown ends the virus will not be gone. Lockdown is to reduce spread to keep hospitals from being overwhelmed, not to eliminate the virus.

It will still be circulating when the restrictions start to lift, so trying to avoid all chance of getting it unless you are in a vulnerable group is a little bit futile.

catsandlavender · 09/04/2020 19:49

If I’m using something immediately (e.g. bottle of wine...) I will give it a scrub with an antibac wipe. Otherwise I just stick it in the cupboard/fridge overnight and assume that’s enough.

CheesyHousePlant · 09/04/2020 19:53

I just put it away and wash my hands.

I leave my post unopened for days, been practising for that for years so I am glad it has come in handy Grin

Flaxmeadow · 09/04/2020 20:14

Because even though the virus is detectable on surfaces after a certain amount of time, it degrades further and further hour by hour. The risk of there actually being enough virus to infect you is negligible.

Then there's the fact that if you wash your hands as often as you should be, even if there was enough virus on a package to cause infection, you'd kill it with a hand-wash anyway.

But do we know just how contagious this viris is yet for sure? It's brand new, it was only named in January and scientists are obviiusky still studying it and finding more about it every day

For example the measles virus is now known to be highly contagious. It can be caught by being in a room hours after an person infected has left. Even if that infected person didn't touched anything in the room, or even sneeze or cough. I believe the common cold, a coronavirus, can be caught this way too

Yes it might be over the top to clean shopping, or to change outdoor shoes and clothes in the hallway. But surely isn't a few minutes of time worth it to reduce possible risk. Lets face it, a lot of us have a few minutes time to spare anyway and the less risk taken the better, for everyone

Frompcat · 09/04/2020 20:29

Not for me, as it means I risk a relapse of my OCD. I would rather take the small risk of contracting covid from food packaging.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 09/04/2020 20:32

I open them with gloves and then chuck contents into quarantine.

MaryShelley1818 · 09/04/2020 20:39

I don't, I wash my hands with soap and water as advised.
No wonder I haven't been able to get a single pack of cleaning wipes for over a month now.

I'm gobsmacked people are still using gloves despite being told not to, and gobsmacked again that people don't know the difference between a bacteria and a virus.

ArtisanBreadBin · 09/04/2020 20:41

@maryshelley1818 I've started a thread about this and, holy moly. You're not allowed to point out the difference.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 09/04/2020 20:46

What’s wrong with gloves??

dementedpixie · 09/04/2020 20:48

Gloves are no use unless you change them after everything you touch

Quarantina · 09/04/2020 20:50

and gobsmacked again that people don't know the difference between a bacteria and a virus.

I'm even more gobsmacked that so many people don't realise that choosing to market a product as 'antibacterial' does not necessarily mean it useless against viruses. Many (not all) 'antibacterial' products will also be effective give against viruses.

SpeedofaSloth · 09/04/2020 20:51

I don't, I wash my hands.

JassyRadlett · 09/04/2020 20:54

Given that viral load appears to play a role in the severity of illness, at least for some, I’m happy to take my chances with packages that may or may not have been touched by someone. My shopping mostly comes from Ocado so it’s packed mostly by robots, transported in a refrigerated van and dropped off by a delivery man who has only touched the handles of the bags.

If there’s a trace of the virus on the tin of tomatoes then that’s that. None of my household are in the vulnerable group and unless we don’t leave the house for the next 18 months we are going to find ourselves in much higher risk contact.

ArtisanBreadBin · 09/04/2020 20:58

@Quarantina you've said it "not all". That leads people into a false sense of security.

Delatron · 09/04/2020 20:58

😂 I’ve been loving ignoring my post. I now have justification to do so.

HighlandYak · 09/04/2020 20:58

I put everything in boxes in the garage for a couple of days.

SMJYellow · 09/04/2020 21:03

I don't sanitise my shopping. I do t have time for that.

Would it be better if the government was to make rude, selfish, mannerless behaviour illegal. A 20 pound fine for anyone caught sneezing or coughing without a tissue or into their elbow and force people to keep their body fluids to themselves.

timetest · 09/04/2020 21:09

I unload onto the drive then bring out a bowl of hot soapy water and wash packages before taking them into the house. Tinned and non perishable goods get left in the car boot for 3days before they’re put in the larder.
DH is vulnerable.

snowegg · 09/04/2020 21:09

So happy for this thread. I did once. Now i don't.

PipGirl404 · 09/04/2020 21:14

Yeah, I don't.

I'd honestly be lying out my arse if I said I washed my hands before/after as well.
