How do you sanitise your shopping?

Do you wash your tins with soap for 20 seconds? What do you do about bread in paper or meat or plastic cartons? And what about fresh fruit and vegetables?

OP posts:

It's been shown that surfaces aren't a risk. People in enclosed spaces are. I bet people are washing their shopping & then having family over for Easter. That's when they'll catch it.

BlowDryRat · 03/04/2021 12:19

I don't. I am not the slightest bit worried about catching covid from my shopping.

BlowDryRat · 03/04/2021 12:21

I'm CEV. Still not worried about it.

WilsonMilson · 03/04/2021 12:32

I give some things a quick wipe with a hot soapy cloth, but it’s becoming less and less as honestly I cannot be bloody arsed any more.

theDudesmummy · 03/04/2021 12:37

We spray packaging, bottles etc with antiviral spray. I also quarantine parcels and post in the garage for 24 hours.

Higgeldypiggeldy35 · 03/04/2021 12:41

Havent they just released new research that wiping surfaces is not going to make a difference as almost all transmission is airborne?

draughtycatflap · 03/04/2021 13:17

I photograph all my food then throw it away and eat the prints. Maybe a bit OTT but best to be safe.

daisychain01 · 03/04/2021 13:21

That made me laugh more than it should have 😂 @draughtycatflap

UsedUpUsername · 03/04/2021 13:22

@simonisnotme

you do realize that it is a 'virus' not bacteria therefore antibaccing stuff will do FA
I know !!!

How can they stop when flu season comes again? It’s actually scary to read some of these rituals!

OliveTree75 · 03/04/2021 13:24

@HarkAVagrant

I cover everything with salt and ashes and bury it for a year. I'm eating food now that I bought when the OP made the first post.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

No, no, no and once again, no. You live in a world surrounded with bacteria and germs, you cannot avoid it, it is partly the reason we are all alive and don't go down with every single thing going. Fraid that way lies only psychosis, phobia and OCD type behaviours.

poppycat10 · 03/04/2021 16:42

Are people seriously still doing this? The idea that you could catch covid from surfaces was debunked last year.

It is sensible to wash your hands when you get home from the shops (or being out anywhere) and not because of covid, but doing anything else is a complete waste of time.

I don't wash tins, that would be daft, the paper labels would go all mushy! Grin I leave them in 'quarantine' for a few days.

Bread gets taken out of its wrapper and put into new bags (and into the freezer as I freeze all my bread - health reasons).

Fresh fruit gets dunked in soapy water and dried.

Veg packed in plastic is taken out of that an put into fresh bags.

Meat in plastic trays is taken out and then wrapped for the freezer unless being used within 2 days.

Basically it's the outer wrapping that I want to either remove or allow to quarantine (e.g. biscuit packs).

Cardboard/paper/plastic is recycled, other stuff thrown.

vdbfamily · 03/04/2021 16:50

Have never done this at all.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 03/04/2021 16:51

@HildaSnibbs

I don't - just unpack it and wash hands and door handles afterwards.

dementedma · 03/04/2021 16:56

Blimey! People are doing this? We don’t sanitise any of it and a year into lockdown are all perfectly well

Sunshinegirl82 · 03/04/2021 16:57

I put hand sanitiser on my hands when I leave the shop (if I remember) and wash my hands when it's been put away. Have done the same since everything started last year, have shopped in person every week, no online deliveries. Never had covid as far as I'm aware.

I genuinely don't know how people find the time for all the sanitising! I barely manage to get to the supermarket in the first place!

You are so wise 😂
toolatetooearly · 03/04/2021 17:20

Jeez, I thought this washing shopping nonsense had been abandoned by most people last summer. Never occurred to me people still did it!

toolatetooearly · 03/04/2021 17:22

aaah wait, this is an inexplicably resurrected year-old thread! I presume no one still does this??

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 03/04/2021 17:49

I use self service tills, own carrier bag, and sanitiser upon entering the shop and leaving.

dividedwefall · 03/04/2021 18:21

I bought a laser gun. Everything that we buy gets lasered in the garden. If it survives, we eat it. If it goes up in flames we bin it. No virus is getting through my door.

dividedwefall · 03/04/2021 18:23

I once watched someone spray everything in their trolley before putting it in the car. All I could think of was the chemically fumes she had breathed in whilst doing it.
Dodie66 · 03/04/2021 18:28

I put water and bleach in the sink and dunk things like milk bottles snd fridge stuff that’s in sealed packets or tub. Other stuff gets wiped over with a cloth soaked in the bleach water. Leave to drain then wipe and put away. I wipe bread packets and anything in cardboard boxes. I also wash packets of frozen food like peas, chips etc. Any tins or packets that can be stored are put on a shelf and left for 4 days before being out in the kitchen cupboard. There is a vulnerable adult in the house so we need to protect him

theDudesmummy · 03/04/2021 18:55

I didnt realise this was originally an old thread! Still, I do still use antiviral spray. It is easy enough and may just help...and keeping the parcels in the garage for a while is no hardship eiether, so why not...
