For the developed and resourced country that we are, we are potentially going to be overtaking Italy and Spain by the looks of things.
Australia and other nations have death rates in double figures. They were smart to close borders and even close regions. Canada the same. Denmark, etc. The list goes on. South Korea have the situation under control.
We were warned about this. I feel like majority of those deaths could have been avoided.

'am interested in that too. Is there an understanding in China of where this virus came from and that the wet markets have opened again? Are people forming resistance to that move or are they too scared?'

Its like we're all too polite to ask about it and demand China do something (and prove they have) for fear of being labelled racist. They know sars/mers and now Covid had an animal genome that crossed over so why aren't the media screaming at China to prove they are addressing and shutting them down wide scale. All we have heard is one province has now stopped the sale of cats and dogs for consumption.

Oliversmumsarmy · 04/04/2020 09:47

WHO have also said the China numbers are accurate

Is the WHO to be trusted when it comes to China?

“The WHO decided against declaring a global health emergency at a Jan. 23 meeting, when Tedros said there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission outside China”

Yet an Austrian ski resort was apparently the source of what atm looks like our patient zero who apparently contracted it some time in early January.

This China everyone is praising for being so good at containing the virus, let us not forget, was the actual source of this virus and gagged the reporting of this virus when it was brought to their attention.

When it was reported that China was rushing around building a brand new hospital to house victims of this virus when there were very few deaths reported.

Did no one look at the news and not believe what China was reporting?

Quartz2208 · 04/04/2020 09:47

And the only strategy really we have ever had as a pandemic is yes let people get it and see who is alive at the end

And that is the scary awful truth of this. No matter how much we have come on our technological advances in many ways we are as equipped to deal with this as they were previous ones. Measures and resources and anti virals can be checked to try and minimise that and no doubt the death rate in the 21st Century will be less than before
But ultimately yes no shutting down earlier/closing borders would have prevented this. Lessened the death toll yes prevented no we can’t beat a virus. We can merely firefight and try and limit

@alloutoffucks stop being so dramatic. It is not want ANYONE wants. Of course I don’t WANT that!!! For goodness sake. What I want is that China didn’t have wet markets where animals are treated so badly that viruses like this spread. What I want is that China were honest about what was happening so we could have contained this virus.

That didn’t happen. So now we need to find our way out of this mess. Nobody wants this. Nobody.

ShanghaiDiva · 04/04/2020 09:51

givenchy
There is a difference between wet markets (found throughout Asia) and those that trade in wild meat. Restrictions prohibiting the latter have been introduced, but wet markets continue.

alloutoffucks · 04/04/2020 09:53

Yes WHO are to be trusted.
I am not being dramatic. That is the consequence of letting everyone get the virus and see who is alive at the end. Half a million dead and unknown numbers left with lung damage. And this is a conservative estimate.

mochajoes · 04/04/2020 09:53

@alloutoffucks so you believe an earlier lockdown would lessen the economic impact?

The thread has been full of comparisons with NZ & OZ & their low death rates.

GirlYouHaveNoFaithInMedicine · 04/04/2020 09:54

Y'all do know that there is a way to debate different opinions without slinging insults at each other?

alloutoffucks · 04/04/2020 09:55

I believe that allowing most people to get the virus in the UK which will kill a conservative estimate of half a million and leave unknown numbers with lung damage is immoral. WHO also called that UK initial plan immoral.

Bluntness100 · 04/04/2020 09:55

A wet market is just the name for a market that sells food and produce.

A wet market (also called a public market)[1][2][2] is a marketplace selling fresh meat, fish, produce, and other perishable goods as distinguished from "dry markets" that sell durable goods such as fabric and electronics.[3][4] Wet markets are common throughout the world.[5][6][7]

The issue is not markets selling food, the issue is the trade in wild animals and food hygiene practices.

alloutoffucks · 04/04/2020 09:56

Yes I have been to a wet market in Leicester.

mochajoes · 04/04/2020 09:57

Okay thank you at least I know what you now want. Most people to get the virus and see who is left alive at the end. That would mean an estimated half a million dead and unknown numbers left with lung damage. But in your eyes a worthwhile sacrifice.

Do you understand the difference between acknowledging that a virus is incredibly difficult to contain & deaths are inevitable & wanting it to happen?

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 04/04/2020 09:58

I think you cannot compare countries in the way that you are all doing. Unless you have had personal converstaions with the experts who are advising the government there is no strenth to your argument. There are so many armchair experts who have no expertise

GivenchyD · 04/04/2020 09:59

Shanghai thankyou for that explanation. Ok, so wild animal restrictions, not wet markets, have been introduced and adhered to?

'stop being so dramatic. It is not want ANYONE wants. Of course I don’t WANT that!!! '

It's awful isn't it. The Covid conspiracy warriors deciding we all want everyone dead if we point out the facts. People will get it, older and vulnerable are being shielded and being supported with food parcels etc, the NHS has had unprecedented amounts of money and resources chucked at it and is coping. We have only had 2 weeks lockdown and already people are getting restless so there is not a chance doing it earlier would have worked.

France had earlier, more stricter lockdowns and their sad death toll was 1120 in one day.

It's the Chinese governments fault for keeping this quiet for too long. We should be grateful we have expert, world renowned scientists advising Government on how best we can manage the coming few weeks.

Tonyaster · 04/04/2020 09:59

Most people to get the virus and see who is left alive at the end

That is what is going to happen however we react, yes.

alloutoffucks · 04/04/2020 10:00

WHO are the experts. They have said clearly what they think the UK should be doing. The UK government has continually ignored them with its ridiculous herd immunity which really means let most people get the virus and see who is alive at the end.

alloutoffucks · 04/04/2020 10:02

Those saying we should ignore what WHO says are also those who do not understand what a wet market is.
Do some reading. Look at what WHO are saying. Yes there is another way from just let most people get the virus and see who is alive at the end. The experts at WHO are saying what needs to be done.

Oliversmumsarmy · 04/04/2020 10:03

What I want is that China didn’t have wet markets where animals are treated so badly that viruses like this spread

I have been on threads discussing this sort of thing pre Corona and been told that it was against Chinese culture to shut these type of markets down.
This is China’s way and to say it is wrong is racist

Why are people laying the blame at the door of the government
You could have watched the news and drawn your own conclusion on what would keep you and your family safe.
This virus didn’t originate here.

We are just dealing with the effects of mistakes made by others.

Maybe it is just me but I get the rage when it is reported how well China are doing containing this virus.

Bool · 04/04/2020 10:03

@ShanghaiDiva thank you. Do you think the restrictions will be adhered to - are they so strict that people will be scared into not trading in wild animals anymore - or is it a question of let’s see?

alloutoffucks · 04/04/2020 10:04

@Oliversmumsarmy Do you know what a wet market is. Do you know the UK has them?

Oliversmumsarmy · 04/04/2020 10:05

I was talking about what is eaten.

Oliversmumsarmy · 04/04/2020 10:06

I have said before eating things that really shouldn’t be eaten would lead to bad illnesses

CendrillonSings · 04/04/2020 10:07

alloutoffucks

I suspect we will be the worst in Europe though.

And when we aren’t, will you apologize for your frenzied nonsense?

Yes WHO are to be trusted.

Oh dear. China’s official figures indicate that their deaths per capita were at least 6 times lower than Germany’s - and Germany’s are still continuing to rise. Does that sound remotely plausible to you? Will you apologize when China’s real death toll is shown to be much, much higher than officially claimed (perhaps 15-30 times as high)?

Bool · 04/04/2020 10:07

Ok let’s not derail this thread. We are all aware that it is the wild animals such as bats being sold in these wet markets that is the issue. Sorry I abbreviated.

mochajoes · 04/04/2020 10:08

Why have China only issued a temporary ban on wildlife trade?
