For the developed and resourced country that we are, we are potentially going to be overtaking Italy and Spain by the looks of things.
Australia and other nations have death rates in double figures. They were smart to close borders and even close regions. Canada the same. Denmark, etc. The list goes on. South Korea have the situation under control.
We were warned about this. I feel like majority of those deaths could have been avoided.

Farming makes animals less likely to spread disease but its not infallible (BSE). Otherwise there's no moral difference between eating cows or pangolins.

ShanghaiDiva · 04/04/2020 10:09

I hope restrictions are being adhered to. China certainly has the ability to quickly implement and enforce restrictions.
I have never seen a market that trades in wild animals (not saying they do not exist) so cannot comment on what is happening. My local wet market continues to operate.

alloutoffucks · 04/04/2020 10:10

Yes I trust WHO the experts over a bunch of randoms who do not know what a wet market is. Do some reading on this issue, Don't just watch what Boris says and take that as gospel truth.
WHO have said that the UKs initial strategy of letting everyone getting the virus and seeing who is still alive at the end was immoral ad that there are other ways to tackle this without killing lots of people.

alloutoffucks · 04/04/2020 10:12

Farming where we encroach more and more on habitats of exotic wild animals makes the transfer of a virus very likely. We don't have to eat bats, just have cows grazing on the edge of land where exotic animals live.
This will happen again.

GivenchyD · 04/04/2020 10:12

'Those saying we should ignore what WHO says are also those who do not understand what a wet market is.'

Oh for goodness sake we've had weeks of 'it originated in Wuhan wet markets' in the media but no that is incorrect, not wet markets rather 'markets selling animals that should not be for human consumption and that have been treated appallingly with no health and safety or food hygiene standards observed'. Ok. Bit long winded isn't it when we all know we are talking about bats and poor mistreated pangolins sold in (wet) markets.

Bool · 04/04/2020 10:12

I believe every European country will end up at about the same death rate. If there are any differences it will be because of things such as demographics such as more elderly people, less efficient shielding of the health vulnerable and the whether the health system being overwhelmed.

So far the UK doesn’t stand out on any of the above. Other countries have more elderly populations. Other countries live more inter-generationally. From what I am reading our NHS is not overwhelmed yet (and I pray it stays that way).

So I think a lot of people will be very disappointed they wont be able to blame the UK government at the end of this.

As already said I do think we should have better testing to ensure health workers can come out of isolation and so we know who has had the virus so we can get working again. Seems the government is finally getting its act together on that.

ShanghaiDiva · 04/04/2020 10:12

@Bool
I think restrictions will be adhered to. China has suffered a massive loss of face and can not afford not to take action imo.

Tonyaster · 04/04/2020 10:13

I agree with you bool

mochajoes · 04/04/2020 10:14

And I was accused of having an agenda!

Bool · 04/04/2020 10:15

@ShanghaiDiva that is good to know indeed. Are you allowed back yet. Wishing you all well.

alloutoffucks · 04/04/2020 10:17

No people on this thread saying why are wet markets still open. Sorry but you don't know what you are talking about.
Read on this subject. Read on the WHO website. Read the many articles published abroad in decent magazines about this.
If all you do is listen to out TV news and Boris you will be woefully misinformed.
I took my kids out of school when we were all being told to just wash our hands. Some of you on this thread told me I was being hysterical to do that. I did that because I knew what was coming. You also told me I was being hysterical to say that this number of daily deaths were going to happen in the UK with the lack of government inaction.

I am under no illusion that the UK government gives a flying fuck for me or our family. We are dispensable. As one of the shielded group I am dispensable.

ShanghaiDiva · 04/04/2020 10:18

Bool
Agree, better testing and more testing is vital.
China took the opposite approach to the uk: if you had symptoms you had to go to the hospital to be tested, hence the pictures of overcrowded hospitals and massive queues.
My dh is currently in quarantine in China and will be tested several times over 14 days (in addition to twice daily temp checks) before he is ‘released’.

GivenchyD · 04/04/2020 10:18

'believe every European country will end up at about the same death rate. If there are any differences it will be because of things such as demographics such as more elderly people, less efficient shielding of the health vulnerable and the whether the health system being overwhelmed.'

Yes bool, sadly what happens when we have a virus currently without a vaccine. It is a tragic, distressing situation for us all. But whether crufts went ahead is a drop in the ocean. Lockdown would not have lasted if implemented earlier.

ShanghaiDiva · 04/04/2020 10:19

@Bool
Not allowed back yet.
Dh is there, but still has one more week of quarantine.

CendrillonSings · 04/04/2020 10:19

So I think a lot of people will be very disappointed they wont be able to blame the UK government at the end of this.

That will indeed be the hardest thing for the diehard moaners to accept in this entire crisis...

MangoFeverDream · 04/04/2020 10:20

Farming where we encroach more and more on habitats of exotic wild animals makes the transfer of a virus very likely. We don't have to eat bats, just have cows grazing on the edge of land where exotic animals live

This is not how it happened. Have you not seen footage of wild animals, procured from god knows where, stacked one atop another?

I have never seen a market that trades in wild animals (not saying they do not exist) so cannot comment on what is happening. My local wet market continues to operate

So my local wet market where I was living offered already butchered livestock. Did yours offer live animals? I’m sure many of the largest cities were dropping that practice.

Tonyaster · 04/04/2020 10:20

That will indeed be the hardest thing for the diehard moaners to accept in this entire crisis...

They won't accept it. Just a lot of Corbyn like twisting and turning to make the facts fit their agenda.

Cecesea · 04/04/2020 10:21

Most people to get the virus and see who is left alive at the end

I actually dont mind this after 3 weeks stuck at home. Survival of the fittest. instead of propping up a non existent economy and making everyone miserable.

GivenchyD · 04/04/2020 10:22

'We are dispensable. As one of the shielded group I am dispensable.'

We aren't dispensable. The shielded group certainly isn't that is why they are being supported to stay at home for 3 months.

alloutoffucks · 04/04/2020 10:22

No every European country is not going to have 1% of its population die. The UK will have a lot more. And I am sure in a years time some of you will be posting here with "good reasons" why it was inevitable that many more people died in the UK than other European countries. Either that or you will say every other European country is lying about their figures except the UK.
The UK who until a few days ago was not even counting people who died in care homes in our figures.

I am angry at some of you on this thread. Your continues posting of lies and ignorance will have encouraged some people not to take suitable precautions when the government was doing nothing. People with vulnerable kids who should have taken them out of school for example, encouraged to keep them in school by some of you lot.

excitedmumtobe87 · 04/04/2020 10:22

Once we have a vaccine and anti viral meds that treat this, then we can go for herd immunity. To do so beforehand is inhumane. First we need to suppress it.

It is possible to simultaneously blame China and those who were too slow to act here.

Tonyaster · 04/04/2020 10:23

We are dispensable. As one of the shielded group I am dispensable

No you aren't, you are being shielded.

MangoFeverDream · 04/04/2020 10:23

Otherwise there's no moral difference between eating cows or pangolins

Except that pangolins are likely to go extinct in our lifetime by their use in Chinese medicine? Huge difference.

Bool · 04/04/2020 10:24

@tonyaster ah yes Jeremy using this entire economic disaster we find ourselves in to justify his economic policies. That really was the most telling example of his narcissism.

excitedmumtobe87 · 04/04/2020 10:25
