For the developed and resourced country that we are, we are potentially going to be overtaking Italy and Spain by the looks of things.
Australia and other nations have death rates in double figures. They were smart to close borders and even close regions. Canada the same. Denmark, etc. The list goes on. South Korea have the situation under control.
We were warned about this. I feel like majority of those deaths could have been avoided.

I think there is a sense of us alone as an island and having nowhere to look for hope or reassurance. And just the sheer numbers now. I knew we would reach peak virus and exceed capacity but now we are here it is terrifying and sad seeing the numbers and the economy tank. The only things giving me comfort are really mundane things.

China, Korea, Singapore, Japan believed that the "right time" for restrictions was right at the beginning, to, er, stop people dying. And who'd have guess it actually worked pretty well

Errr Japan does not belong here they did not close stores and restaurants and they don’t test anyone. They did close schools but people here obviously do not know that March is the end of the school year in Japan. Schools were literally holding public graduation ceremonies....

Pretty racist to assume all Asian countries are doing the exact same things ...

Bflatmajorsharp · 03/04/2020 21:10

One of the problems is that without extensive testing it's impossible to calculate predictions. The research from Oxford suggests that 50% of the UK may have had the virus, Imperial says between 1.8-11.4%.

Without know which - if any - of these figures is correct, it's impossible to know which interventions (other than the very obvious PPE) need to be tightened.

The lack of PPE and testing is enraging. The dithering about shutting pubs and restricting large gatherings created huge anxiety, panic buying and the busiest visitor day ever on Snowdon etc.

Feel free to go and do a phd and help out rather than being a keyboard warrier

@Blossomad I don't think you understand .

WHOOSH

If you can’t see it. You can’t comprehend it. I think some people are just too terrified to comprehend that they would be led into this situation or lied to.
Imo I would rather know the truth so that I can prepare. Lots of people were preparing and working from home, buying sanitiser, masks and respirators on Amazon before the govt officially locked down. If you wait to be told what to do or what to think about this and refuse to acknowledge that Boris is a bare faced liar ( which he was sacked for from his journalism job) then you are at the end of the line to gain access to information and equipment that could save your families life. That’s on you.

Cherrysoup · 03/04/2020 21:22

As some bright news presenter asked today ‘What’s the point in testing when the negative test might be positive tomorrow because the person has since been exposed?’

MangoFeverDream · 03/04/2020 21:23

China quarantined the entire city of Wuhan on 23rd January approx 2 weeks after the discovery of the outbreak

You are a ridiculous person. Oh the police were just visiting some shit-talking doctors for no reason at all 🙄 but they were totally on top of things despite not listening to and even punishing medical staff (who were already diagnosing a SARS like condition in December from the wet market) and letting millions from Wuhan blithely infect others across China and abroad in the run-up to Chinese New Year.

Also, Chinese methods are not replicated in a day. They had strong antiterrorism policies for years that worked very well in preventing intercity movement and tracking groups of ahem ethnic minorities—methods that could prove useful once they could no longer ignore the problem, that is (this is quite typical of Chinese officialdom fyi)

helpfulperson · 03/04/2020 21:23

The other question not being answered at the moment (because until this is over noone has time to stop and think) is how many of the people who died would have died anyway or at least within 6 months. In Italy I've seen figures of 80% quoted,

GivenchyD · 03/04/2020 21:25

'and refuse to acknowledge that Boris is a bare faced liar ( which he was sacked for from his journalism job'

You are sounding more and more like Terry Christian, constantly making it purely a political issue. It isn't. Boris doesn't work independently he has a team of medical and scientific experts advising him.

If you want to see how to really cock up the health care response, look at America

Who knows what will happen in Australia or New Zealand this early on. Both those countries are much larger and more sparsely populated to the U.K. so comparisons are meaningless.

I beg to differ - NZ is not "much larger" than the UK.

We closed our borders to all passengers, other than residents and permanent citizens, a couple of weeks ago, and anyone coming in has to isolate. We have a stricter lockdown (also stricter than Australia). Who knows what the end result will be for all countries at this stage, but letting all and sundry into a country while this is going on just seems foolish to me.

goldpartyhat · 03/04/2020 21:27

And who the hell is naive enough to believe the Chinese figures?

Winter2019 · 03/04/2020 21:28

I actually can't believe how late was UK to take any action when other countries had closed borders, gone in lockdown with way less cases than UK had. I mean, it was inevitable that covid19 will spread everywhere, everyone was warned, why not take the action earlier and try to limit the cases

mochajoes · 03/04/2020 21:30

@Greenpop21 thanks! 😉

goldpartyhat · 03/04/2020 21:30

@eaglejulesk

Population of U.K. 44 million

Population of NZ under 5 million.

Don't be so bloody stupid. Go look up 'Sparsely populated

goldpartyhat · 03/04/2020 21:31

Correction

U.K. population 66 million!

England has more than double the amount of deaths than Ireland.

Boris is advised primarily by Cummings who employed a completely unqualified “forecaster” that he found online who believes in Euthanasia. Forgive me if I find that distasteful.

AnyName1 · 03/04/2020 21:34

Sorry! The UK has more than double the deaths compared to Ireland.

GivenchyD · 03/04/2020 21:35

'Boris is advised primarily by Cummings '

About politics. There is no way the CMO, CSO, PHE etc etc etc would standby and let Cummings call the shots on this epidemic.

Bflatmajorsharp · 03/04/2020 21:35

Cherrysoup the purpose of testing is so that people who test positive can self-isolate as much as possible. Most of us won't be able to completely self-isolate inside our households if we live with other people, but if one person in a household tests positive the rest of the household would know not to go out for 14 days.

That doesn't solve the problem of people testing negative one day and not the next, but it does reduce the viral load across the whole population.

mochajoes · 03/04/2020 21:36

don’t let the Mocha character rile you up, I think they’re on a payroll or have an agenda. Best not to rise to it, it’s not worth the energy.

Yeah anyone who rationally disagrees with your opinion must be Bojo in disguise 🤦🏼‍♀️

Random18 · 03/04/2020 21:36

anyname population of UK compared to ROI?

Random18 · 03/04/2020 21:39

So many people have commented in so many places that the UK don't follow WHO advice and it's a fair comment.

WhO advice is not to close borders.

Is Dominic Cummings advising Sweden as well?
