For the developed and resourced country that we are, we are potentially going to be overtaking Italy and Spain by the looks of things.
Australia and other nations have death rates in double figures. They were smart to close borders and even close regions. Canada the same. Denmark, etc. The list goes on. South Korea have the situation under control.
We were warned about this. I feel like majority of those deaths could have been avoided.

Can’t wait to see how this weekend pans out with the lovely weather that has been forecast. I’m expecting stricter guidelines from Monday once people show how moronic and selfish they are by screwing up and going out.

Clavinova · 03/04/2020 20:35

Cygnus showed quite clearly the UK was unprepared for any pandemic.

Have the conclusions been published yet?

From the Telegraph link above;

"There was also cynicism across Whitehall about the epidemiological modelling. The previous chief medical officer, Sir Liam Donaldson, ended his term under something of a cloud when the 2009 H1N1 (Swine Flu) pandemic proved a damp squib relative to the initial modelling."

"The same view was taken of forecasting of the 2013–2016 West African Ebola outbreak."

I think the Level 1 threat was just the scenario of the exercise, not necessarily what they were expecting to happen in real life;

"The exercise was set seven weeks into a severe pandemic outbreak and challenged the NHS to review its response to an overwhelmed service with reduced staff availability,”

MadameF · 03/04/2020 20:35

The UK is in fact following a trajectory similar to the US and worse than even Italy and Spain. Stricter confinement is necessary.

@GivenchyD

I agree with your post 100%

BolloxtoGender · 03/04/2020 20:36

It seems not only CV, but hysteria is infectious...Twitter, media, much of MN. I'm not sure the combination of news 24/6, SM and being in lockdown at home with the TV on is great for coping in these unprecedented difficult times.

Anyway, I'm going to be watching Vanity Fairs with a glass of wine.

Wehttam · 03/04/2020 20:37

Yep madame and this is only the first wave 😞

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 03/04/2020 20:42

I think all governments shall look back and think how could we have done this differently

No country has been or will be prepared for the pandemic never has this happened before at such a rate. We in Europe are very different societies to China and South Korea or even Singapore countries in Europe our governments do not have the freedom to control their population in the same way and that can’t change over night

I think we should have been testing before and we desperately need more PPE (we are lacking at work at that is very concerning) but this I am reading about again and again and not just in the uk

I have been amazed at how quickly we have implemented changes at work (mh unit nhs)

I think many are not thinking about what is going on behind the scenes and get caught up in the political debate

GivenchyD · 03/04/2020 20:43

Madame, I think the FT graphs have been widely derided previously. They had us forecast at 500 deaths when we had approx 80. Sorry, no link it was on twitter (so it must be true)

'also see nobody has been able to tell me what are death rate would be if we classified deaths in the same way as the Germans'

Yes this interests me. They classify differently but how and why?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 03/04/2020 20:46

I am worried people have become more relaxed and people will be out this weekend

There was certainly more traffic these last two days and more people out and about especially today

Humans very quickly adapt to new situations which is a plus but we also relax in our new situation and to some extent we need to feel a manageable level of worry/anxiety to keep ourselves safe

Quartz2208 · 03/04/2020 20:47

potentially the first wave

Look there is still an awful lot we dont know - we need to get proper testing in throughout Europe and the US so the numbers are known. China has already admitted there are asymptomatic cases which could number a whole lot

www.bmj.com/content/369/bmj.m1375
www.france24.com/en/20200401-china-says-new-coronavirus-cases-drop-starts-posting-asymptomatic-tally-too

Which potentially means by the end of this first wave a high number of people would have been infected and potentially have immunity so there is a chance that this first wave could be the last. IF we properly get behind decent testing

That is where we should be angry at the lack of testing going on to really know where we are in all of this.

news.sky.com/story/coronavirus-first-uk-death-was-a-week-earlier-than-thought-nhs-data-reveals-11967999

Indicates as well that we may not be tracking so far behind other European countries which has never really made sense to me given that London was at the heart of spreading it around. Why would we be so far behind the others?

MadameF · 03/04/2020 20:49

@GivenchyD it isn't a forecast it is a graph of what has happened from the first day of 3 deaths.
The UK seems to be following the US trend of deaths at the moment.
No forecasts, just facts.

MH1111 · 03/04/2020 20:49

Madame F.

Stricter confinement is a lever the government should use if the NHS can’t cope.
It, like the lock down we are currently in are only short term measures, as behavioural scientists have pointed out.

The vast majority will get covid 19 and herd immunity will eventually eliminate it, but in the meantime we need to ensure the nhs has the capacity to help those whose who need hospital treatment

BolloxtoGender · 03/04/2020 20:50

I don’t think Humans can sustain this level of hysteria for very long, Surely they’d run out of emotional energy? And they adapt to keep their sanity?

www.spiegel.de/international/germany/corona-challenge-germany-reaching-the-upper-limit-of-testing-capacity-a-4d75e7bd-dd0e-41e3-9f09-eb4364c43f2e

This piece about testing in Germany I thought is interesting. Only time will tell I think.

Blossomad · 03/04/2020 20:52

Mocha joe

I’m sorry what about this extensive article can you not comprehend?
Are you being deliberately blind to the words in Black and white?

It says
A SHORTAGE OF VENTILATORS

There was not enough personal protective equipment (PPE) for the nation's doctors and nurses. The NHS was about to “fall over” due to a shortage of
⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️⬇️
ventilators
⬆️⬆️⬆️⬆️
and critical care beds. Morgues were set to overflow, and it had become terrifyingly evident that the government’s emergency messaging was not getting traction with the public.

This is from the Telegraph article you just said doesn’t mention ventilators.
Lord help us. 👀👀👀🙄🙄🙄🙄

Geminijes · 03/04/2020 20:57

The number of arm chair experts amaze me.

Blossomad · 03/04/2020 20:57

mochajoes

@blossomad from that article you linked it states the dangers about the lack of PPE but I can't see any that states every future pandemic would attack the lungs & require ventilators?

I’m replying to this. Some people just DO NOT GET IT.
Level up 👀👀👀

GivenchyD · 03/04/2020 20:58

'No forecasts, just facts.'

Ok Madame, as I can't find the link I'll leave it. I'm not a graph expert but there were comments from a few others who were experts that suggested it was not done in a correct way therefore wasn't an accurate graph.

Blossom, stop being so rude.

McCanne · 03/04/2020 21:00

Angry yes, but couldn’t be less surprised.

Blossomad · 03/04/2020 21:01

Yes @geminiges
Because quoting a pandemic simulation exercise run by Expert epidemiologists means that I am an armchair expert. because God Forbid govts listened to scientists advice when Dominic Cummings can spout about Euthanasia and employing unqualified “forecasters” who believe the same instead.

mochajoes · 03/04/2020 21:01

@Blossomad I don't think you understand

Show me where the article that states every future pandemic would attack the lungs & require ventilators?

Wehttam · 03/04/2020 21:01

Blossom don’t let the Mocha character rile you up, I think they’re on a payroll or have an agenda. Best not to rise to it, it’s not worth the energy.

GivenchyD · 03/04/2020 21:03

'because God Forbid govts listened to scientists advice when Dominic Cummings can spout about Euthanasia'

But they do, CMO, CSO, PHE, SAGE. It has all been led by scientific evidence.

MangoFeverDream · 03/04/2020 21:06

Easy to say ‘we should have shut down hundreds of thousands of businesses, all schools, forced millions into unemployment, stopped people moving around or seeing their relatives, trapped Brits abroad, force people to stay at home, wreck the economy and incur debts it will take decades to pay off etc’ with hindsight

Well said

m0therofdragons · 03/04/2020 21:06

Huh? The curve is being flattened and they are re calculating predictions. Op is your info actually informed by real knowledge or just Facebook bollocks?

goldpartyhat · 03/04/2020 21:08

The only time you can start making comparisons and working out what could have been done better is when the pandemic is completely over.

Who knows what will happen in Australia or New Zealand this early on. Both those countries are much larger and more sparsely populated to the U.K. so comparisons are meaningless.
