How great is she?

I know we like Chris Whitty too (does anyone know how he is?) But I think she may be even clearer and calmer. A lovely manner of authority without talking down to us.

Wouldn't it be great if something that came out of all this was that young girls have a new role model in the mix with their Instagram folk?

There really are some inspirational women around today, for our daughters to emulate.

Nicola Sturgeon, Catherine Calderwood, Jenny Harries, to name a few.

Lastminutenoworries · 30/03/2020 18:26

A agree with Foobydoo, Que Sera and others.
Although she has a lovely calm manner I don’t think she is necessarily telling the truth when answering questions.
When asked about why we don’t test more people she waffled on about how all countries medical establishments/ resources were different and said that actually the NHS trained other countries on best practice, inferring that we knew better. If the real reason is that we aren’t testing as much is because we haven’t got the kit and staff I think that she should be honest and tell us.
Don’t keep us in the dark. Tell us the truth

Zilla1 · 30/03/2020 18:31

TheMustress and others - There really will be fewer inspirational women at the end of this due to early government decisions about testing and contact tracing and misinformation and incompetence about PPE.

This will directly lead to the deaths of HCPs working in dangerous environments and circumstances as well some who will face ongoing impairment judging by early indicators of HCP fatality, the numbers already being ventilated and outcomes for some of the ones who come off support successfully.

Shame those role models that DCs have in their own homes won't be around. Still, let's all laud and say how much we luffs someone who is as responsible as the others.

defthand · 30/03/2020 18:38

I find her evasive.

RU562341 · 30/03/2020 18:39

I think Dr. Harries said she has a son/daughter (can't remember) who is frontline doctor. She has skin in this game too.
I have no real opinion on her, mind you. I'm sure she is competent and capable.

Rosehip10 · 30/03/2020 18:45

I find her quite waffley

definitelygc · 30/03/2020 18:55

I'll tell you what confused me today. They showed a chart of deaths per day among all the most affected countries and said we are "tracking in line with France and behind Italy and Spain"

But a few days ago Jenny Harries said we shouldn't make comparisons between countries as there are too many differences (e.g. in how things are recorded, in health care systems, in demographics etc.). So what's the truth? Can we compare country-level figures or not? We seem to be getting very conflicting information here.

Egghead68 · 31/03/2020 06:45

I think she’s powerful enough that no one is going to “reprimand” her.

I think we are going to see a lot less of her since she let slip the timeline. They are frantically trying to do damage-limitation on that. In yesterday’s press conference they were keen to stress that “it’s premature to set a time for how long this goes on”.

Egghead68 · 31/03/2020 06:49

I was unimpressed to her response when the ENT surgeon died. She just said how sad it was without offering any apology or taking any responsibility for the risks healthcare workers have been exposed to without adequate PPE.

Freshairimportanttoo · 31/03/2020 07:50

Zila I agree with the article that this is a national scandal.

Probing investigation after this.
Something in the culture of the NHS is badly amiss. I get the feeling people like jenny don't 'get it' and lie.

Like the lies told to front line staff, you don't need masks.

Actually they do but no masks are available. Scary.

Freshairimportanttoo · 31/03/2020 07:57

Make, re mass gatherings, countries who have dealt well with this like South Korea, Taiwan etc tracked, traced and shut down.

It was gross negligence to allow this mixing and to lie about it!?

pocketem · 31/03/2020 08:22

Her blatant racist attitude came out when she mocked the WHO's advice and said it was only for poor countries. She and her Oxbridge chums were the advisors that pursued the disastrous herd immunity strategy, insisting they were right and all the 'foreign' experts were wrong, for days until it was proven that they had completely got it wrong

Makeitgoaway · 31/03/2020 08:24

Jennie Harries isn't Oxbridge

OP posts:
midgebabe · 31/03/2020 08:29

To track and trace like South Korea would require major changes to surveillance laws...the ability to track your phone and face recognition, trancing of all financial transactions etc , in some ways worse freedoms for us to give up because the abuse of such techniques can be hidden

Freshairimportanttoo · 31/03/2020 08:33

Midge it's on the table right now.
Jeremy hunt is looking at it.
It's far more effective way of combating this than punitive measures agaisnt shops selling Easter eggs.
Our whole response has been woeful.

midgebabe · 31/03/2020 08:45

The policy is not to avoid selling Easter eggs!

Egghead68 · 31/03/2020 10:12

Like the lies told to front line staff, you don't need masks.

Like the lies told to all of us that masks are “ineffective”.

Zilla1 · 31/03/2020 14:29

Depends on the mask, Egghead. Most of the masks I've seen people wear around the shops I think have broadly nil effect in preventing infection by the wearer though may have some effecting in reducing their infection of non-wearers (not what I think the wearer intends).

Some PPE masks are effective in preventing infection of the wearer though these have not been available in the healthcare setting to the extent government have said in their briefings in previous weeks. Odd that. It's those shortages that will lead to the early death of HCPs and the lies said previously that HCPs have the PPE they need that are particularly infuriating to HCPs.

Foobydoo · 31/03/2020 19:42

People are finally starting to see through Jenny Harries and her blatent lies!
She is disgraceful and has blood on her hands.

I suggest any mumsnetter who 'luffs her' or who is unaware of what she is up to, closely watches all the press conferences to see the lies, dishonesty and arrogance for themselves.
