How great is she?

I know we like Chris Whitty too (does anyone know how he is?) But I think she may be even clearer and calmer. A lovely manner of authority without talking down to us.

Wouldn't it be great if something that came out of all this was that young girls have a new role model in the mix with their Instagram folk?

I agree she is a good female role model. Straight to the point, clear, calm and speaks with authority.

DowntonCrabby · 30/03/2020 16:34

I really like her too.

I’m in Scotland and love the fact Nicola Sturgeon is flanked daily by a female cabinet secretary for health Jeane Freeman and a female Scottish CMO Dr Catherine Calderwood.

ssd · 30/03/2020 16:35

I like her too. And she must have been following the social distancing rules, unlike Boris and Co. A woman who practices what she preaches.

Tonyaster · 30/03/2020 16:37

I like her even more since she made the point that most businesses are being very socially reaponsible.

Wallabyone · 30/03/2020 16:42

She's brilliant.

Ragnarok · 30/03/2020 16:43

I disagree. She was the one who convinced the government to allow Cheltenham to go ahead!
This taken from an article on the Canary...
On 11 March, prime minister Boris Johnson interviewed Harries. They discussed attendance at large sporting events. Johnsonsaidother countries have:
"banned big sporting events and they’ve stopped mass gatherings of one kind or other."
He asked her to explain why the medical advice was not to do the same in this country. Dr Harriesreplied:
"in general, those sorts of events and big gatherings are not seen to be something which is going to have a big effect"

People have such short memories. Her advice got loads of people infected. She's awful, like the rest of them.

Makeitgoaway · 30/03/2020 16:54

Is there any evidence that Cheltenham caused a spike? People who caught it then would be coming out (or dying) now. I don't know what the answer is but the reasoning made sense to me at the time. It would be interesting to know if people who attended or worked the event were badly affected.

anotherlittlechicken · 30/03/2020 16:55

I do like her too. She seems warm and friendly and approachable.

Sunnyhopefulness · 30/03/2020 16:58

She is brilliant - JH for PM ?!

Inkpaperstars · 30/03/2020 17:00

I am not in a position to assess how good she is at her job, but she certainly doesn't always answer the questions. She is like a politician at avoiding the true thrust of the question, and also often isn't that clear in what she does say.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 30/03/2020 17:00

We do, but how scary is he in that advert? Dead behind the eyes, like a robot.

I think early on he was absolutely scared stiff - he didn't sign up for a pandemic! But I think he has grown more confident in his role as time has gone on.

But yes, yes, yes to Jenny Harries.

loobyloo1234 · 30/03/2020 17:01

She’s so clear and concise. I like her the most. And trust what she is telling us. Makes me wish we had a strong female PM though

winterinmadeira · 30/03/2020 17:01

She’s amazing. It’s really difficult for any woman to get to the position she has or CMO.

Freshairimportanttoo · 30/03/2020 17:03

I with ragnorack.

And if it doesn't have any impact re huge gatherings going ahead, esp Liverpool, Madrid... Why the hell are families and people being persecuted for sunbathing in parks or going for two solitary walks a day instead of one.

I find her very cold and not warm at all. My favourite health person is trumps little man.

He's the one I've been listening too.

Inkpaperstars · 30/03/2020 17:03

It was also annoying when she said several days ago that there had been distribution issues with PPE to frontline staff but that was now all solved. It clearly wasn't solved as they have now had to admit. Maybe she thought it was, but that would be a strange mistake to make without further checking. Must have been very worrying and dispiriting to staff to hear her say that.

millymae · 30/03/2020 17:05

I can't imagine her referring to the PM as "Boris ........
I agree - I’m the world’s worst for doing it so I can’t criticise others, but we really shouldn’t call him that. He’s the Prime Minister for goodness sake.

foxychox · 30/03/2020 17:05

I like her but love Patrick Vallance, he's walked the walk when it comes to healthcare...

Freshairimportanttoo · 30/03/2020 17:06

Oh I see she was also in favour of keeping schools open. 😕

WobblyAllOver · 30/03/2020 17:06

The thing is you can disagree with most politicians or experts about something.

However, I am still pleased to see a strong female presence at the top.

Freshairimportanttoo · 30/03/2020 17:08

I think between them they have led this country down the wrong path.

Where is sir Patrick BTW?

When all this is discussed we will see how badly wrong our response has been, mixed message's, loss of public trust, u turns etc.

And we will probably see what these models are and how flawed they are.

FFSFFSFFS · 30/03/2020 17:08

She's great. Also - she's 62. So she would have battled some extraordinary sexism in her day (obviously sexism still here - but would have been much more blatant as she moved through her career).

I imagine her in meetings where there's lots of blah blah blah posturing and then she comes in with a quiet calm voice saying and this is what needs to be done and this is the reason why - and that is what happens....

Ragnarok · 30/03/2020 17:08

I cant find any evidence that proves dangling my nuts in the deep fat fryer is a bad idea. Must be fine. Silly me, carry on then.

Freshairimportanttoo · 30/03/2020 17:08

Wobbly it's quite a large u turn however in this case which wasted time and cost lives.

lyralalala · 30/03/2020 17:09

I like her

I also think she showed that she's one of the few grown ups involved when the question about non co-habiting couples "cuddling" was asked and the journalist, Boris and the other chap all giggled like schoolkids.

coconuttelegraph · 30/03/2020 17:09

She was the one who convinced the government to allow Cheltenham to go ahead

It would be interesting to know if Cheltenham caused a measureable increase in numbers, it's well over 14 days ago now. If some of the cases can be definitely linked to Cheltenham it would mean that the underlying rate of transmission is actually lower than we think wouldn't it? If we take those cases and their subsequent infections out the general risk would be lowered.

If there is a Cheltenham effect obviously we can't reverse it but from an analysis and information improving point of view it would be helpful to be able to quantify it.
