Could this be the end of the Royal family?

I don't mean if they die of the virus...

But there's nothing like a lockdown to really highlight inequality. I saw an article yesterday about Kate + William "isolating" at Anmer Hall, having done a photoshoot where they pretend to be on the telephone and writing ("working").

I think if people are going to have to spend months at home, in small flats with kids, still going out to work or trying to WFH, queueing for supermarkets with empty shelves......that could definitely breed some discontent. Or if people catch it and have to be treated in makeshift hospitals, not getting an ambulance until they're struggling to breathe, while the RF can be whisked away to a private hospital for treatment. I've already seen a lot of comments along the lines of "why don't they offer up their many palaces to be used as hospitals, rather than doing newspaper articles".

Opinions?

The Queen has made a statement.

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 30/03/2020 13:50

The piece could not BE more tone-deaf. The arrogance that they think THIS is what the country needs right now is breathtaking.

Of course the royal family should go. There is not ONE persuasive argument to the contrary.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/03/2020 13:50

Sadly no, I don't think this will be the end of them

I'm not remotely bothered about them "addressing the nation" since I place no value on what they have to say anyway, but when the current crisis is over I believe there'll be a PR offensive to make the mind spin

Their constant drive for self preservation will guarantee it

Lumene · 30/03/2020 13:50

They should be donating some of their vast wealth or property. They should not be going to their second homes FFS.

RoseLalique · 30/03/2020 13:51

I hope that this thing makes people wake up not only to the pointlessness of the royals, but 99% of celebrities too.

Wolfgirrl · 30/03/2020 13:52

I certainly hope so. If this doesnt open royalists eyes, then literally nothing will.

To be fair to the Royals, they can't win really, because if they go out and about, they are flouting the rules and putting others at risk, and if they stay at home, they are surrounded in servants and luxury.

The old damned if they do, damned if they dont... funny how they always choose the 'dont' though isnt it? I would rather br critiqued for trying than not bother at all.

Nobody is suggesting they should be throwing a garden party, but rolling up their sleeves and mucking in with the NHS volunteers (not just one afternoon for PR and photos) can hardly be criticised can it?

And before anyone says anything about it being a security risk, etc - there is PLENTY they can do without security problems. Such as batch cook meals at home for NHS workers, work in a food bank warehouse, or sign up as a phone volunteer - think how many pensioners would be delighted to get a phone call from them.

However they are pathetically lazy and will stick with 'raising awareness' by tweeting links and making the odd 30 second speech online.

BeijingBikini · 30/03/2020 13:54

Yes I suspect (am hoping) something similar might happen with pointless celebs - now they can't pose in front of pools in Dubai, they're all falling over themselves to take bathroom mirror selfies with #lockdown.

I do think times like this make people realise what is truly important.

They don’t live in the luxury of billionaire foreigners in London, many of whom are far richer than the Royal Family. This was one of the things I don’t think Megan could understand compared to the brash, tasteless examples of wealth in Hollywood.

Personally I like most of the Royal Family

Snowflakes1122 · 30/03/2020 13:54

Maybe. Nothing like a big catastrophic event to shake things up and make people stand up and take notice of the huge inequalities in society.

Wolfgirrl · 30/03/2020 13:55

Why?

I'm less bothered by celebrities because I'm not expected to fawn over them or fund their million pound home improvements.

floffel · 30/03/2020 13:55

I hope so! Complete anachronism

Supersimkin2 · 30/03/2020 13:58

The pix embarrassed me.

They come across as half-witted trust fund babies auto-repeating 'sharing' while knowing FA about that - except that they won't be doing it.

The garden and the M&S suit were a mistake.

herecomesthsun · 30/03/2020 13:58

Have you seen the news that PC is out of isolation?

Wolfgirrl · 30/03/2020 13:58

I'm by no stretch a fan of celebrities but they 'earn' their money - if they just sat in their house refusing to engage they wouldn't get paid. They dont get 60 million a year from the taxpayer, no questions asked, along with paid for security and home refurbishments.

Fieldofgreycorn · 30/03/2020 13:59

GSTQ

goldfinchfan · 30/03/2020 13:59

If everytime they see the public.....people are smiling and grinning at them perhaps they don't know how shit most people's lives are?

RishiSunakFanClub · 30/03/2020 14:00

No.

lentenwonder · 30/03/2020 14:01

if we abolished them, we'd end up with celebrity presidents and we'd never get all their private wealth back accumulated over the last 150 years because it's too fundamental a change to land registry.

So I can choose to ignore pictures of them vs pictures of other random C list celebs we'd have to pay more for, for security.

Ejmorgan · 30/03/2020 14:01

Why don't instead of worrying about people who have more than us we concentrate on people with less

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 30/03/2020 14:03

I have far more important things to worry about

Wolfgirrl · 30/03/2020 14:03

People have less BECAUSE they have more.

Lynda07 · 30/03/2020 14:03

BeijingBikini, it makes me cringe when I see photos of people and their homes being made public but I'm a very private person. It's just the way things are nowadays - a relative of mine today posted a photo on facebook of what he'd done to his sitting room, basically reorganised it. No harm done and a lot of people who know him seem quite impressed but - why do it?

I know I'm an old fogey. My home is my sanctuary and I'm not nosey about other people's. However it is different for those in the public eye, a lot of people are really interested in them and it's harmless enough. It just doesn't interest me much.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 30/03/2020 14:03

@Ejmorgan
Well said
