Did China lie?

I was vaguely suspicious of the Chinese governments figures at the start of the outbreak although towards the end began to have more faith that the government were being honest.

Michael Gove’s comments along with the alarming stats from ours and other countries (numbers, ages, health conditions etc) are making wonder whether the Chinese government covered up a fair bit and I’m worried about where this leaves countries around the world... Talk me down...

Do bears shit in woods ? Hmm

Postspecific · 29/03/2020 22:58

Ah okay @PicsInRed I was gleaning from the article about the lead scientist that she was close but realised I’d made that up.

PeepeeDarling · 30/03/2020 08:16

They knew and didn’t tell when they should have they delayed and delayed alerting WHO for as long as possible then have repeatedly lied about numbers since. Lots more stories coming out now about how the deaths are much much higher in China than reported (no shit) hopefully more people will realise how much has been covered up.

Genevieva · 30/03/2020 08:28

China is at fault for ignoring the problem, then covering up its severity and the rest of the world is at fault for prioritising big businesses that rely on Chinese factories. Beijing cynically locked down Hubei and told the rest of the world it was OK to continue trading with and travelling to and from the rest of China even though they knew there were already cases outside Hubei. The international community chose to ignore the evidence to the contrary because it suited their economies to believe the problem had been contained. It was entirely predictable that this would happen when China was not quarantined in its entirety two months ago. Now the entire global economy is in free fall and people the world over are living in lock-down.

There need to be consequences. Large companies must be required to diversify their supply chains so that if they lose a manufacturer in one region they can continue operating. It would reduce the pressure to keep borders open when a new disease emerges next time. I am not buying anything made in China again unless they introduce stringent new measures on animal rights and companies that use Chinese factories have back-up elsewhere.

Mumsnet zapped the animals in
Cages thread this one probably next to go 😞

MarshaBradyo · 30/03/2020 11:16

The animals one had good discussion
Annoyed they zapped it so quickly

PeepeeDarling · 30/03/2020 11:17

Me too, so frustrating we can’t be allowed to have a balanced discussion about it?
Zap the specific posts you have concerns about that didn’t not warrant the whole thread to be removed imo.

MarshaBradyo · 30/03/2020 11:19

So part of the solution to global pandemics is to never talk about what has caused two Confused
Censorship for no reason

ShanghaiDiva · 30/03/2020 11:22

Talking about the causes and ensuring that measures are taken to prevent this happening again are important.
Posts that call all Chinese disgusting are racist and there were several of them on that thread.

MarshaBradyo · 30/03/2020 11:26

Shanghai I agree but there were many good ones, I had just read your last one which was interesting. Shame they didn’t just target the unacceptable ones.

PeepeeDarling · 30/03/2020 11:30

Exactly take out the racist posts of course but leave the rest of the discussion

PieceOfMaria · 30/03/2020 11:38

I am annoyed that MNHQ have totally deleted BOTH of the the posts about cats and dogs being slaughtered in the wet markets now.

Surely it's possible to remove offensive posts without removing the entire thread - twice?

Censorship is getting out of hand on here.

MeganTheVegan · 30/03/2020 11:53

Given that ALL recent pandemics ( HIV, Mad Cow Disease, SARS, H1N1, etc) have come from eating animals, you could argue that it is racist to single out the Chinese. It is about time we ALL stop eating animals.

Of course, they lied. I don't understand how anyone could even try to believe their figures. The Chines Communist Party have told lie after lie just to cover themself and people have died because of it.

Hagbeth · 30/03/2020 12:07

And they have yet again opened their wet markets. Soon there will be another epidemic. www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/rearvision/china-wet-markets-and-the-wild-animal-trade/12028484

ShanghaiDiva · 30/03/2020 12:12

Wet markets are not the same as wild animal markets.

Hagbeth · 30/03/2020 12:16

But they are both to blame for this pandemic. Read the article. "How China's wet markets and wild animal trade created an epidemic"

ADreamOfGood · 30/03/2020 12:22

Humans have evolved to eat animals alongside plants.

Hagbeth · 30/03/2020 12:27

Good try! 1/10

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 30/03/2020 12:28

There need to be consequences for China for the whole wet/wild market fiasco.

I thought they shut them a couple of weeks ago?

Queenscake · 30/03/2020 12:43

That’s exactly how the Europe got into this state now. They never believe anything from China. You all had seen what China went through over 2 months ago... the whole county shut down... one billion people went on self isolating... 41 thousand doctors and nurses from other provinces went to support Wuhan, 3000 people died... the western media believed the death number is much higher... BUT when the virus hit Europe, the government telling its people “ it’s just like a flu, nothing to worry about “ how could people believed it? Carried on their life like nothing will happen... who is lying??? Life in China is slowly coming back to normal now... people started working, children started schools... maybe it’s time for you all to stop questioning others and focus on your own business.

MarshaBradyo · 30/03/2020 12:46

Queenscake yes the West went through their own curve which started with disbelief.

MarshaBradyo · 30/03/2020 12:47

Although I disagree with your last line.

A spotlight needs to be on China and making markets safer so we don’t see the third iteration.
