Did China lie?

User1775564212 · 29/03/2020 20:16

I was vaguely suspicious of the Chinese governments figures at the start of the outbreak although towards the end began to have more faith that the government were being honest.

Michael Gove’s comments along with the alarming stats from ours and other countries (numbers, ages, health conditions etc) are making wonder whether the Chinese government covered up a fair bit and I’m worried about where this leaves countries around the world... Talk me down...

OP posts:

They silenced anyone who spoke out about this early on

NemophilistRebel · 29/03/2020 20:39

Can they be held financially accountable for the mass lockdowns everywhere?

What about this....

Apparently paper predicted the outbreak one year before it happened.

Of course they lied.

Comenext · 29/03/2020 20:42

@User1775564212
Surely they’d have made something more potent?
How do you know they haven't? It could be pure chance this one leaked. They may have other viruses tucked away in the lab just waiting.

Youcunnyfunt · 29/03/2020 20:44

They did downplay the seriousness, well according to some journalists they did. They really didn’t like the doctor who tried to warn the media about the virus, they called him a whistleblower, which says it all really.

PicsInRed · 29/03/2020 20:45

It could be a bioweapon OP, but it could be good old fashioned idiocy and carelessness.

There was considerable concern around the level 4 lab in Wuhan as it was thought that their safety procedures (and ability to withstand criticism) weren't advanced enough to make it safe.

They were working with similar, bat borne pathogens and were reportedly advertising for university students to help on these projects, in the lab. What could go wrong, eh?

Or it could be a bio weapon. 🤷‍♀️ Either way, it's their virus and the Chinese government's fish market story is as bullshit as their subsequent claims that US operatives planted the virus in Wuhan. 😂🤨

larrygrylls · 29/03/2020 20:45

Why would they lie (after initially trying to cover it up)?

I think they have been remarkably honest with many Chinese academics publishing research on open source platforms and releasing the DNA profile incredibly quickly.

The pandemic has remarkably well paralleled the Wuhan epidemic.

peppersneezes000 · 29/03/2020 20:48

This definitely did not originate from a bat....

In another twist the Russians are blaming the US for planting it in Wuhan....

larrygrylls · 29/03/2020 20:49

Pepper,

And you know it did not originate from a bat exactly how??

chickedeee · 29/03/2020 20:50

We are lying about figures too- not enough testing 😩

PotsofChoc · 29/03/2020 20:51

I don’t think that this was a bio weapon. I can’t see any benefits to anyone from it.

homealone1986 · 29/03/2020 20:51

I still struggle to get my head around the fact that all of this originated from one person...

Genderwitched · 29/03/2020 20:51

But wouldn’t it be a bit shit for a bio weapon, killing mainly the elderly and people with health problems? Surely they’d have made something more potent?

But it could be a bio weapon designed to completely destroy the economies of the rest of the world, with the knowledge that the rest of the world, as democratic countries, would probably not be able to contain the virus as effectively as China.

larrygrylls · 29/03/2020 20:51

This thread is like listening to young children who love using ‘lie’ instead of ‘were unsure’ or ‘made a mistake’!

No one is claiming that the tests represent the total number of cases, merely a proxy to see a trend, not an absolute number.

Genderwitched · 29/03/2020 20:52

Leaving China top of the heap after this is over.

MarshaBradyo · 29/03/2020 20:53

There are a lot of tin foil theories on here!

Agree with SonEt

Although the warning Dr did they try to stop him? Not sure

PicsInRed · 29/03/2020 20:53

Why would they lie (after initially trying to cover it up)?

It's cultural. Look up "losing face".

I think they have been remarkably honest

Their government, and the governments of Russia and, iirc Iran, are claiming that the USA did this deliberately, seeding the virus Wuhan. That neither truthful, nor constructive nor even sensible.

with many Chinese academics publishing research on open source platforms

Some whistle blowing Chinese doctors and scientists have done the right thing, at great risk to themselves, but that's nothing to do with the Chinese govt.

and releasing the DNA profile incredibly quickly.

Yes, they DID sequence that awfully quickly, didn't they. Almost as if they already had the data available.

Teacher12345 · 29/03/2020 20:54

They lied. They new about this in November I think. A friend was on a coach trip around China in November ans was refused entry into Wuhan. Many on the coach later came down with a cough and sore throat.
It was reported to Who at the new year so maybe 6/8 weeks after they new about it.
DH thinks it was a bio-weapon and tbh - you ask why kill the old and sick ...because they are expensive and contribute the least to society would be the rationale I guess. China has an aging population that they cannot afford. I personally don't think they would put their economy under so much pressure on purpose.

larrygrylls · 29/03/2020 20:54

It would be a very cool bio weapon to paralyse the western economies. There is one flaw in this fiendish plan, however. Who is going to buy all the Chinese goods when they recover quickly while we are on our knees?!

PeepeeDarling · 29/03/2020 20:54

Of course they did. They did not alert WHO or national public health when they should have done this information was not only withheld anyone who tried to raise the alarm was silenced. The numbers they did (eventually) provide massively underreported both infection rate and the true mortality rate. Repeatedly lying and withholding crucial information that if had have been provided when it should have been would have meant the global response could have actually slowed the spread and saved thousands and thousands of lives. There needs to be consequences.

PicsInRed · 29/03/2020 20:56

It's most likely a lab accident and the Chinese told the world because they needed all the scientists in the world to help formulate a vaccine. Basically, they've fucked up and are like a 4 year old trying to blame their brother, the USA, instead of taking responsibility for their own mistake.

MarshaBradyo · 29/03/2020 20:56

Teacher If China wanted to take out its elderly population why did it pull out all the stops to clamp on it so quickly?
