The rise in the hero complex

There has been a certain rise in people claiming they are or thinking they are heroes. "We are saving lives".

That basically involves an avid desire to report anyone that dares to leave the house, police everyone else, dismiss the worries and concerns of others, ridiculing, attacking, bullying and emotionally blackmailing anyone who struggles, some kind of irrational fear/hate of children and gleeful virtue signaling about how much better they are at staying home. Abusing key workers that in their eyes are not doing their job,for doing their job, following guidelines(made up or official) ,not following guidelines,in the wrong clothes etc.

There are people who are seriously struggling right now, emotionally, financially, mentally, physically etc. People that are becoming more and more vulnerable as more restrictions and public policing come in. People that have killed themselves due to the situation we are in.

They are not heroes, they are not saving lives.

Some people have very little to excite them in lives and don’t have much of a voice. This has given them the platform they need. Sad.

ineedsun · 31/03/2020 10:00

I ordered my mum and dads shopping for them because they can't get a slot and their shopping list looked like my15 year old son had written it, all cakes and biscuits with occasional butter and bread. Now I'm conflicted, am I a hero for doing it or a villain for ordering non essentials....🤔

bringthegin · 31/03/2020 10:11

Just popped in for a pick me up - so my kinda people. Thank you, I am loving this thread. It's a welcome bit of sanity.

My essential sweet order arrived in the post - I've never ever been so pleased to see a parcel arrive. Well maybe when the Gin arrives.....

The children are quiet (bribed) and I can get some work done.

bringthegin · 31/03/2020 10:22

@ineedsun welcome to the club, my parents weekly shop is full of booze and chocolate, and wait it for ...hot cross buns..... unfortunately can't get a delivery slot for them...so have to go to the shops (once a week - I am a saint).

Imagine the looks I get 🤣🤣🤣

I'm also the local villain for delivering takeaway once a week to a couple of vulnerable village residents... apparently it's non essential travel, non essential food; it is really is quite dreadful of me. I am the definition of villain.

bringthegin · 31/03/2020 10:30

On a less pithy note; there are some wonderful people where I live; who with no fanfare are doing amazing things. They have organised prescription deliveries, care for those who need it and buddy systems for the isolated. No shouting look at me, they are no fuss, practical and helpful.

I’ve noted that the ones who are virtue signalling, telling people off l, even when they are doing the right things - they are the ones who do fuck all that actually helps or matters.
PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 31/03/2020 10:44

Sadly we have run out of soldiers. Apparently some people have been using them to entertain their kids.

Hopefully you'll still stick around for my wonderful wit and personality.Grin

Us villains need validation too.

Apparently some people have been using them to entertain their kids.

Bsstards using resources to entertain their kids.

I am sure the police said kids could do school work and then had to sit and stare at a wall for the rest of the day. AND they are coming round peoples houses to check!

DesdemonaRosa · 31/03/2020 11:00

Ssshhh. I order 3 soldiers at the start of March because I could see how things were going and didn't want to run out...

Blakes77 · 31/03/2020 11:04

We have a little park on our new build housing estate, you know the type. Those houses facing the park have taken to photographing anyone seen on it, or near it, and posting on fb to shame
FML. Anyone doing that to me would have a picture of my fat arse when I moon them.
Apparently the Spanish soldiers are from the Spanish Legion (not that I have been feverishly Googling) and are all deranged.
The uniforms though...!

Blakes77 · 31/03/2020 11:05

I'm off out now, for my march round the block. Just looking for my sequinned catsuit and stilettos.

bringthegin · 31/03/2020 11:08

Damn it I was too late for the Spanish Soldiers..

I'm going to have to order one of these for protection/amusement instead.

LEELULUMPKIN · 31/03/2020 11:09

As for the "non essential police" I had to go to boots yesterday to pick up a prescription and whilst there I bought some facial hair removing cream as I am currently rivalling Freddie Mercury circa 1984.

I don't want a tache bigger than my Spanish soldier's when he gets here!

MilesJuppIsMyBitch · 31/03/2020 11:10

I found a bag of out-of-date Spanish soldiers at the back of my cupboard - I was going to let the kids use them in a collage.

Is that so wrong??

LEELULUMPKIN · 31/03/2020 11:12

Bugger, Can't get a delivery slot for a Spanish soldier ANYWHERE! Pull your socks up Ocado.

SecondRatePony · 31/03/2020 11:18

Spanish soldiers should be saved for single people only. All you married/partnered people taking soldiers are just selfish twats. Bet you go out for two walks a day, as well.

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 31/03/2020 11:19

I actually plan to go out today to the ...GASP... woods!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 31/03/2020 11:21

Are you planning on breathing there? Angry

Leighhalfpennysthigh · 31/03/2020 11:22

There are a lot of people out there who are really enjoying this drama and that makes me feel very uncomfortable.

Other people are suddenly champions of key workers despite abusing them for years and whenever there's a person admitting they are struggling pull out the "at least you're not a nurse" blah blah blah when most nurses and other HCPs are just getting on with their job and not looking for devotion from the public.

I've been criticised by a couple members of my staff for sitting on my arse at home while they help out the NHS (we've shut down our main source of business and concentrating on a new one which involves working with the NHS). I'm working out now to keep paying them, looking after two vulnerable elderly people, keeping my autistic partner going whilst not being able to see him for god knows long and also working on a covid 19 response team locally.

RickOShay · 31/03/2020 11:30

A deranged Spanish soldier you say?

SmileyClare · 31/03/2020 11:34

Don't worry about the rumoured soldier shortage.

I have heard from a reliable source (Debbie off Facebook knows someone who heard this) that a Mumsnet army will be available to stand on streets screeching Murderer at anyone opening their front door and calling out Good Morning to a neighbour (or similar deadly droplet spreading behaviour).

Hope you all feel reassured.

Blakes77 · 31/03/2020 11:35

According to my ex soldier DP all foreign legion regiments are deranged/mercenaries/well dodgy. I said, yeah, but YOU didn't look like that in your uniform did you?!
I think he's not speaking to me now.

Wehttam · 31/03/2020 11:40

LOL we are in week 2, imagine the state of some by Month 3 🙄

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 31/03/2020 11:43

Just now on telly

"If I'm downwind of someone and they sneeze will the 2m rule still protect me?"

The wind concept well and truly discovered!

Oliversmumsarmy · 31/03/2020 11:55

If I'm downwind of someone and they sneeze will the 2m rule still protect me

Why would it matter?

Sneezing isn’t a symptom of Corona

Greysparkles · 31/03/2020 11:56

The people catching it now and showing up in hospital in 2-3 weeks time aren't going to have caught it from being downwind of a sneezer hayfever sufferer
