been doing trips up and down the A30 the last few days delivering bits to vulnerable family members. I reckon I’ve seen probably over a thousand campers, caravans and cars loaded with luggage heading towards Cornwall, full of passengers. Very worried for my gran who lives there. Cornwall is full of old people and has one hospital which only just manages to keep up on a normal day. People running away to their second homes ought to be ashamed.

Fifth death just been announced by Royal Cornwall hospital.

frumpety · 22/03/2020 18:29

Noonzerras to be fair that still of the family on the beach at St Ives might be locals and they are social distancing as there doesn't appear to be anyone else around, don't fancy their chances against the seagulls if they get any food out though Wink

Love Cornwall, would move to Penzance in a heart beat, but won't be going until it is safe to do so.

I am in Devon, close enough to Cornwall that I can see it.

I help a charity who support vulnerable people & families here not just with food but with all sorts of other things.

They work with Social Services amongst other organisations.
Some of the people they are delivering help to right now are quite sick with Coronavirus but still left at home because the hospitals are full & they are not 'bad enough'.

I could only give half of what I normally do to help feed people this week because tourists & second home owners have been through the local shops & supermarkets like locusts, going from one to the other taking as much as they can from each one.

Just one example of what tourists & second home owners are personally responsible for....

A care worker who deals with disabled people has not been able to get so much as a slice of bread this week.
Her children have been living on nothing but school dinners & a few bits teachers slipped to them.
On Saturday when she had a food parcel delivered she had not eaten for 2 days.
I know what we were able to give her wasn't enough to make it until next Saturday.
She had NOTHING in her home except her teenaged sons who are now at home for the foreseeable future.

She has been told her children can't go to school because she is not 'essential staff' so they won't get their school lunches.
Vouchers are no help when there is nothing to buy.
She can't shop when NHS staff can because she isn't NHS.
She doesn't personally count as vulnerable so she can't shop then.
She can't afford the £40 minimum spend + delivery cost to try to shop online & the earliest slot available is in almost a month even if she could.
By the time she finishes work the shops are empty because they are handy to stop at on the way down to Cornwall.

This lady is just ONE of many selfish tourists & second home owners are taking from.

I was only able to pass on a fraction of what I would have done even though I added some things from my own preps & stayed up half the night baking bread because my home delivery was mostly missing with no suitable alternatives & the shops are empty.

I count as vulnerable myself & have always had my shopping delivered so luckily have my delivery slots booked already.

We have waiting lists several years long to get on to an NHS dentists list, we have lost at least half a dozen NHS surgeries in the past few years so we don't have enough doctors even for the normal population levels here & the hospital is already massively under stress.

Our pharmacies are smaller, they hold stock to deal with the local population.
If you fill a prescription you could be the cause of someone else who is local dying when they cannot get their medication.
If you visit a doctor, you endanger the life of a local who cannot have that appointment.
If you enter a hospital you are taking it away from someone who lives here who has NOWHERE else to go (unlike you)

We don't have better facilities because once you bought a second home (along with your hundreds of besties) the area started to die.
Small businesses cannot succeed because they have no customer base unless they cater to tourists & eke out a living the rest of the year.
There are not enough locals to keep many businesses open the rest of the year.
Second home owners destroy communities even when times are not so bad.

The lack of locals means e.g. the bus service is weekly - 1 trip to the nearest city & 1 return trip the same day a few hours later.
You miss that bus, you wait until next week to go.
Hospital & other services are designed to cater to the normal population levels, not 'just in case' all the second home owners & tourists turn up sick.
So is the amounts of food held in the shops.

If you buy so much as a single pint of milk as an incomer, you are literally taking it away from a deprived child, or an overworked carer, nurse, doctor, homeless person etc...

Before the influx of these people, our supermarkets & pharmacies were not being cleared out.

Please, stay away.
Go back where you came from & stop murdering our vulnerable people down here just because you can.

Selfish thoughtless fuckwits.

Shout out from Devon to the regular residents of Cornwall. Hope you stay healthy and safe.

OrangeSamphire · 22/03/2020 19:25

You too @flockofgulls. Waving from across the Tamar.

I have signed the petition. thank you for the link.

We were due to go to Dorset for the Easter break, to stay in a holiday cottage. It’s been booked since last September. Tried to cancel but no refund, so we rearranged for October. I honestly cannot think of anything worse than being sick and not being at home!

Teabag37 · 22/03/2020 19:36

Well said snuggle.p

DdraigGoch · 22/03/2020 19:50

@Fairineouf it'll be Londoners headed to Cornwall. Up here we've a plague of idiot Scousers climbing ev'ry mountain. Mountain Rescue (volunteers, some of whom are also key workers) are having to go and pick up the pieces. Hordes of Mancuniuns have been heading to the Lake District. I'm sure that the cities of South Yorkshire have been decamping to the North Yorkshire Moors and that Edinburgh and Glasgow have swarmed onto the Highlands.

In short, it's not just Londoners who are stupid. There are stupid people in every city.

FlockofGulls · 22/03/2020 20:49

the ambulance would just not get to us because of all these extra people

Oh my goodness, that's awful. Hope you're OK Flowers

I'd had a wee holiday booked back in my home town (family not there any more) - I'm not going even though I long to be there, so so much. Public transport is too risky, and if I got ill there, I'd put extra stress on their services.

I'm trying not to leave the house unless I absolutely must. Going to have to start setting the alarm to get up really early for my daily run.

XmasRibbons · 22/03/2020 20:50

Thought I'd leave this here... Angry

Brace yourselves Cornwall.

Wifeofbikerviking · 22/03/2020 20:55

Ah no its rubbish. I live in cornwall and the amount of tourists still coming is really worrying. Theres only 1 hospital that can deal with this. Anything apart from treliske are minor injury, birthing centres, physio and scans etc.
The hospital really struggles with our growing community as it is. We desperately need to attract more doctors and medical professionals and supporting roles to the county after this. It's something I was worried about before this but I hope it will be addressed when we can.

rjebgf · 22/03/2020 21:09

People just won't do as told.
We need lockdown laws and the army on the streets.
Now, before it gets even worse.

Xmasribbons sorry, but I don't believe that story. How many people stand in a petrol station and look at all the car registrations and know where they're from.

YourVagesty · 22/03/2020 21:44

The Welsh press are reporting 'unprecedented' levels of traffic and visitor numbers to beauty hotspots. Apparently the summit of Snowdon is packed.

Mountain Rescue are warning that if people get into difficulty, that they might not be able to go out and save them.

WankStainWasher · 22/03/2020 21:48

@Xmasribbons - people from Cornwall who don't like emmits!

Becca19962014 · 22/03/2020 21:51

yourvagesty I'd definitely agree with that.

NastyOldBag · 22/03/2020 21:52

I live in a tourist town in Devon. My street normally only has one other family, the rest are second homes, many of which are vacant all year bar a couple of weeks. Today for the first time since August there’s no parking on the road, my drive is blocked and there’s people in almost every house. The area is already disproportionately elderly, most of the second homer’s are 50+ and I want to push the selfish fuckers in the sea.
