been doing trips up and down the A30 the last few days delivering bits to vulnerable family members. I reckon I’ve seen probably over a thousand campers, caravans and cars loaded with luggage heading towards Cornwall, full of passengers. Very worried for my gran who lives there. Cornwall is full of old people and has one hospital which only just manages to keep up on a normal day. People running away to their second homes ought to be ashamed.

sorry, but I don't believe that story. How many people stand in a petrol station and look at all the car registrations and know where they're from.

Just because a car is registered somewhere it doesn’t mean it’s in the same area now. My last car was registered in Plymouth. I live in Essex. It means nothing.

SpringFan · 22/03/2020 22:31

BBC just announced a government statement that people should remain in their primary residence. Essential travel does not include travelling to second homes, camp sites or carvan parks even for isolation.
Not the exact words, but sentiment is there.

Peaseblossom22 · 22/03/2020 22:36

And what good is that going to do , people can’t even manage to not bulk buy loo roll , they are not going to pay attention to a paragraph on a gov website . They should be told that if they fall in in an area which is not their primary one then they will not be treated.

Becca19962014 · 22/03/2020 22:39

Agree that's not good enough, though none of their advice really is. They still haven't worked out yet that the uk isn't only England. All the advice I've been pointed to look at has all been England only.

LittleRootie · 22/03/2020 22:45

They should be told that if they fall in in an area which is not their primary one then they will not be treated

Why do pp keep saying this crap? It clearly will not, and should not, happen.

Peaseblossom22 · 22/03/2020 22:50

@Becca19962014 that’s because they only gave jurisdiction over England. Scotland , Wales and NI issue their own guidance

YourVagesty · 22/03/2020 22:54

Becca19962014 I know! I share your frustration on the England-centric info.

they should be told that if they fall in in an area which is not their primary one then they will not be treated

Ethically, I disagree with this, we all pay into the NHS after all. But emotionally, I feel annoyed at the extra pressures on areas that are already under resourced. It'd upset me on a profound and animal level if my mum (for example) couldn't be treated at her local hospital because a bunch of people with no connection to the area had packed out the wards because they came on holiday here at a time of national crisis.

Writersblock2 · 22/03/2020 23:02

I’m in Cornwall and I’m fuming at the selfish stupidity of people flocking here. I have elderly parents with serious health issues who are very likely to die if they get the virus. I have a husband who is essential services. I’m absolutely livid that these people are putting the lives of my family at risk because they fancy a holiday.

Assholes, the lot of them.

Becca19962014 · 22/03/2020 23:34

pease in theory yes, but he isn't saying that in his conferences, so it's being reported as uk wide and only IF people read it they assume it's got nothing to do with them and of course there's guidance elsewhere but it's not linked from the England guidance - God knows finding things on the Welsh assembly website can be like finding gold dust.

Example guidance about people staying in for three months (12 weeks) with certain conditions in Wales its actually going to be four months (16 weeks).

People need to read guidance for each country not just watch whatever crap that idiot is talking each day.

The NHS is national to each country of the U.K. It was devolved in the 90s. I've been refused treatment and charged in England on holiday because my primary residence is in Wales and I'm not alone in that, I got my money back but it took ages and cost a fortune. There are different rules for each business model for the NHS and they all vary. It's rediculous. If diagnosed in England by a specialist the Welsh assembly won't fund your medication, it's like playing political gymnastics.

Becca19962014 · 22/03/2020 23:35

Wow I hope people can make sense of that. Sorry. Really need sleep!!

dorapicasso · 23/03/2020 06:41

Becca I'm sorry, but I don't believe you were refused treatment in England and charged because you live in Wales. The fundamental principle of the NHS is that treatment is free at the point of need. So my Welsh friend who works in London Tues-Fri wouldn't be treated if she became ill because her main home is in Wales? Just not true.

And it's a very important principle. It's what makes us civilised.

Unless maybe you are talking about prescription charges? I don't know how that works but I know that they are payable in England but not some other parts of the UK. But that's not the same thing.

I'm not defending the people who have travelled to other areas, to holiday homes or for holidays. It's completely unacceptable and selfish. The problem is that the messages aren't clear enough. It's all about protecting the elderly and vulnerable which is making some people think that as long as those people listen and stay at home they don't need to worry. They genuinely don't think they will get ill, or if they do, they don't need a hospital bed.

The message needs to be consistent to everyone - stay at home and only travel to go to work, to go out for essentials such as food. But they are not saying that firmly enough for people to hear. And it needs to be aimed at everyone.

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 23/03/2020 06:46

The Caravan and Motorhome Club is shutting until the 30th June and the Camping and Caravan Club has also shut so that maybe will stop a lot of people travelling as loads of people use these sites.

I received an email yesterday evening from CaMC about this

Hopefully this will help with some of the situation, loads of people use these 2 companies

Canyoutellilikrchocolate · 23/03/2020 07:04

We should lock down and everyone return to their primary home address.

SnoozyLou · 23/03/2020 07:12

@Canyoutellilikrchocolate I agree.

GrouchoMrx · 23/03/2020 09:33

The media exposure has unfortunately backfired.

Media exposure of panic buying just increased panic buying. A warning not to stock up on toilet paper simply encouraged more people to stock up on toilet paper.

Asking people to stay away from Cornwall has had similar results.

Peaseblossom22 · 23/03/2020 10:02

@Canyoutellilikrchocolate I agree but can you imagine the chaos in the roads if you said this and how would you police it .

Queues apparently at several local GPs practices here ( most of whom are only letting one person in the door at a time) to register as temporary patients . Our surgery actually has a GP on reception they are so short staffed we don’t have the admin staff to start dealing g with all of this ☹️

YourVagesty · 23/03/2020 10:14

Ffs pease, that's infuriating

BrazenHusky74 · 23/03/2020 10:23

20 confirmed cases and 5 deaths. The odds are better elsewhere.

Becca19962014 · 23/03/2020 12:55

dor I was charged for what went beyond emergency to get me back to Wales. When I spoke to my GP about it they said it was a known problem as they are charged for the treatment and the healthboard or whoever pays doesn't always do so, which means some trusts in England were refusing treatment and to get health insurance for travel in England covering medical care from then on just in case. I was also charged for the GP the hotel called out (but that's different as they are always private and I didn't know that).

It was years ago. And on the news. I got the money back, eventually.

Whether you believe me or not is irrelevant.

Becca19962014 · 23/03/2020 12:56

People are still arriving here.
Despite loads leaving yesterday.
Fuckwits.

MitziK · 23/03/2020 13:36

The ones who are leaving have probably realised what the broadband speeds are like.

Becca19962014 · 23/03/2020 15:05

And got thrown off caravan parks last night!

MitziK · 23/03/2020 17:25

DP, in his less maudlin (ie, not the 'Fuck, my entire family is going to die thanks to those rich bastards') moments, is polishing up his accent - and encouraging me to sing the song of his people.

'Where the fuck you to? Gerroff Moi Laaaaaahhhhhhhnnnnnd!'

SachaStark · 23/03/2020 17:30

Someone has erected a homemade billboard in one of the villages nearby to me, and it reads, “ FUCK OFF TOURISTS”.

Can’t really blame them.

user1467042142 · 23/03/2020 17:43

The worst thing is that if/when we get as bad as Italy and Spain the NHS teams will have to choose who gets the ventilator etc and who doesn't. Who loves and who dies. Services are so sparse anyway down there that and elderly people who live in Cornwall will lose out to younger generations of people who have selfishly driven and camped down there. It's really disgusting.
