FFS how hard is it to understand - stop going out

Zacharyezrarawlings · 20/03/2020 22:08

will you just stop going out ffs. I am a psychiatrist and thus a trained doctor. I graduated from medical school in 1997. I did 2 years working in general medicine/surgery then went on to specialise in psychiatry. I have been a psychiatrist now for over 20 years. I am shit hot at treating depression, OCD, anxiety, pscyhosis, personality disorders etc and all manner of mental health conditions. I am NOT shit hot at treating pneumonia, ventilating people, sepsis or even managing MIs, strokes, appendicitis, or any other number of medical or surgical situations. You really, really do not wnat me as your doctor if you are seriously physically unwell. But if you don't all stop going out this is what I will be asked to do over the coming weeks. This will not be giving patients the best care, it will be doing my best to try and keep them alive.and meanwhile my own patients with significant mental health conditions will be left to fend for themselves.
And all the time I will be exposing myself to a potenitally increased viral load and putting myself and my own family at risk.
You can all avoid this. It is really fucking simple. STOP GOING OUT!
You don't need you hair/nails/eyebrows doing. You do not need to meet up at your friends houses. Your teenagers do not need to see their friends. If you carry on doing these things more people will die.
I am actually despairing of peoples mentality right now. What is so hard to understand. yes its shit. Ive got my own family including teenagers and it is shit. But there is literally no choice.
Please, please, please stay at home unless absolutely essential.

In China they welded doors shut to prevent people leaving apartments.

MotherOfAllNameChanges · 20/03/2020 22:14

Totally agree OP

Maydayredalert · 20/03/2020 22:17

Could not agree more. How clear does the message need to be!

Petiolaris · 20/03/2020 22:20

I’ve just seen a Facebook post about going for a last pint with the lads before the pub closes. Seriously how thick can you get!

goodwinter · 20/03/2020 22:24

Hear hear!

HowIrresponsible · 20/03/2020 22:27

I am shit hot at treating depression, OCD, anxiety, pscyhosis, personality disorders etc and all manner of mental health conditions

For that arrogance have a Biscuit. What's your cure rate.

The rest I agree with.

Gorse · 20/03/2020 22:32

You are absolutely right! I've been despairing over blasé attitudes and the massive number of people who somehow think none of this applies to them. Youngsters believing Covid19 won't affect them at all, well it will, mateys, when all the grownups are sick or dead. As for the many pensioners still doing their thing, yes, you've got to die of something, but don't go out of your way to catch it and wind up taking space in the ITU!

Zacharyezrarawlings · 20/03/2020 22:32

how fair point. That point was not well phrased. What I meant was I know lots and lots about treating those conditions. I constantly read about latest advances in treatments for those conditions. I am invloved in research for treating some of those conditions. I have had over 20 years experience of treating those conditions . I do it every day. I would never ever claim to get it right all the time, but the fact is this is in contrast to treating for example pneumonia which now I know next to nothing about.

PattyandSelma · 20/03/2020 22:36

I don’t think you sounded arrogant at all Op!
I agree with you. Out of interest, in your professional opinion, why do you think people are behaving like this? Apathy? Selfishness? Just not caring or are they misinformed maybe? I’m totally baffled!

Didiusfalco · 20/03/2020 22:41

I get what you mean op, and you have made me think. Because I have had unavoidable contact with so many pupils I think I have been a bit blasé about other contact.

Helpwithaversion · 20/03/2020 22:43

What are people meant to do though when they haven’t stockpiled and their online orders are cancelled
Then the shops are empty do they have to go to multiple places to get food for those families

Frankiecandle · 20/03/2020 22:45

Some of us have to go out to work.

SometimeSomeday · 20/03/2020 22:45

@PattyandSelma

I’m also wondering this!

I think it might be a combination of people genuinely believing that they are invincible and people being in denial?

thenightsky · 20/03/2020 22:48

You are saying exactly what a consultant psychiatrist I'm currently working with said to me last week. I'd have thought you might him, but for the writing style.

LovingLola China did not weld doors shut, they taped up apartment block doors and let out one member of the family once every 3 weeks to go to the food shop, tracking them there and back by their mobile phone app WeChat.

Fiddlersgreen · 20/03/2020 22:49

Well. I have to go to work otherwise I’ll get the sack.
I also have to go to different shops for my groceries because I couldn’t get a delivery slot and I have no milk, bread, tinned food and no ingredients for cooking because I didn’t stock pile and now there’s hardly anything left for me to buy

Pineappletree33 · 20/03/2020 22:49

I don’t think you sounded arrogant either op. I understood what you meant.

SometimeSomeday · 20/03/2020 22:50

I do agree that some have to go to work. My DH is in the army and is so he still has to work. I have isolated my DD’s as one has quite severe asthma and I have only left the house to go to the supermarket. DH on the other hand, has had to go to work every day which obviously puts all of our household at an increased risk.

The thing is, there are some things we can’t control. DH going to work is essential. Me going to the supermarket is essential. Having a get together with friends is not essential. Everyone must stop everything non essential! It will literally save lives!

SinglePringle · 20/03/2020 22:50

Go to work if you can’t work from home.

Go to the supermarket to get food.

Go to the hospital if instructed to by a medical expert.

Go for a walk in an area where you can be 6ft away from another human being.

Other than that STAY THE FUCK HOME.

It really really really is that simple.

AhoyMrBeaver · 20/03/2020 22:50

I agree op. The unwillingness to comply has really surprised me; I thought we as a nation were quite good at following orders, but seemingly boredom and temptation get the better of too many people.

Ihateselfishbastards · 20/03/2020 22:51

People are fucking stupid and will only get it when close members of their family die. Then they will moan why nobody did more to stop them!

Zacharyezrarawlings · 20/03/2020 22:51

did it is puzzling. Some of it I think is just being badly infromed - and I dont think the Gov has helped here - some is denial (the reality is so horrible that people pretend it isnt happening) some of it will be that some people are just genuinely selfish. I think some of the older genreation (and I am including my own parents here) have a sense of having had their life and are making the deicsion to keep up their quality of life regardless of the consequences (what they seem not to grasp is that their actions endanger younger generations too and not just themselves) It is genuinely quite baffling though.

help there is a difference between going to the shops to get basic foods and essentials and going to get your hair/nails done or going out for "a last pint"
Every single contact you have can have consequences. The more we can limit these conatcats the better. You cant say "oh well, I had to go to the supermarket where I saw loads of other people so I may as well just pop for a coffee/a pint/ to the hairdressers." it doesnt work like that.

OP posts:
Nothappy599 · 20/03/2020 22:53

It's not the people going to the shop to get food or medicine I'm cross about.
It's the Mum sharing pics of her and her kids on the swings at the park.
The small groups of women getting together, because they are all wellHmm
Just stop it.
Stay at home.
Or walk in quiet places.

Frankiecandle · 20/03/2020 22:54

I can't work from home. I have been told I have to go into work.

So you can all get off your high horses if you see me on public transport. I'm sick of the MN assumption that people out and about are off to the fucking hairdressers or whatever.

You would all be fucked if supermarket staff STAYED AT HOME.

goldface · 20/03/2020 22:54

Quite agree.
WTF is with the last pint at the pub bullshit???
Every non essential contact increases the risk and prolongs the problem.

Zacharyezrarawlings · 20/03/2020 22:55

yes, yes I do get that you have to go out in some cricumstances. Some of us have to go to work we have to buy food (if and when we can!) I get that but the point is there is a LOT we dont HAVE to do and we need to stop bloody doing it!
nightsky it is true. We are all seeing the reality in work and it scary (ps Im a her not a him so def not the same person!)
