What are people thinking so far?

OP posts:
moochpooch · 20/03/2020 18:00

I think they are doing everything they can because a global recession was looking plausible before coronavirus.

Dongdingdong · 20/03/2020 18:00

Disappointed about the 80% wages that was mentioned

I despair.

SegregateMumBev · 20/03/2020 18:00

DD is a self employed dancer. Earlier this week all her work contracts were cancelled. So she now has no income for the foreseeable future. Has been trying to make her first claim for UC. But that requires verification of rent and identity. Some of that can be done online, but there’s supposed to be a face to face interview ( I believe these have ceased) or a phone call ( but I know the UC staff are absolutely snowed under. )

From what I see, that minimum income floor is suspended ( not sure what that means). She will get , what , 480 a month plus some cover of rent costs? Any more clarity?

Portabella24 · 20/03/2020 18:01

Bankruptcy is extremely parochial

Dagnabit · 20/03/2020 18:01

If you're working from home then presumably you'll be paid as normal? So why are people saying 80% of wage for working from home or doing fuck all?

Greenbutterlfy566 · 20/03/2020 18:02

What about unemployed? Those on jsa?

MaddieElla · 20/03/2020 18:02

It is 5 weeks to get a universal credit payment. Will this be sped up in the circumstances?

Husband is self employed.

MereDintofPandiculation · 20/03/2020 18:02

Large employer in my area laid off a whole lot of people yesterday. They'll not benefit from 80% pay. They get a maximum of £145 every 3 months. That's equivalent to £11 a week.

moochpooch · 20/03/2020 18:03

When do SE pay taxes? Surely if they have lost their job their tax will decrease? Is there the opportunity to delay paying tax?

PepePig · 20/03/2020 18:03

Are those currently on SSP (therefore currently 'not working') entitled to this 80% money? There's a big difference between 80% of a wage and £95 a week...

Doyouknowthisisnotmyname · 20/03/2020 18:03

Moan fucking moan . We are all struggling . The government are doing the fucking best they can in yes unprecedented times . People are fucking dying.

moochpooch · 20/03/2020 18:04

Why not?

BiNgOoOo · 20/03/2020 18:04

I think he done brilliant, really surprised

Pomegranatepompom · 20/03/2020 18:05

I wasn’t suggesting a bonus, I’m probably being emotional as I’m exhausted and stressed.
Working in the nhs at the moment is not the same level of responsibility or stress as being a teacher, however much childcare they kindly provide.

Lardlizard · 20/03/2020 18:05

I was impressed

unhappyclap · 20/03/2020 18:05

* Large employer in my area laid off a whole lot of people yesterday. They'll not benefit from 80% pay.

Why not?*

apparently this 80% covers those who were employed by the company as of 28th Feb

that's what I understood

StillDisappointed · 20/03/2020 18:05

Can guarantee those who think the self-employed 'package' is fine is someone who'll be sitting at home receiving at least 80% of their wages for the next 3 months.
Likely with a handy 3 month mortgage freeze as well.

Self-employed renters now have to apply to UC, apply for HB and receive paltry amount compared to employees.
They've thrown us under the fucking bus.

Growing up will do nothing to stop people from losing their homes and going hungry.
Stop being so narrow minded and look at the bigger picture. Sick to the back teeth of all the 'I'm alright Jacks' now.

Juicyfrooty · 20/03/2020 18:06

I'm so worried

I'm zero hours contract barely getting any work at all since the start of the week.

DP self employed in construction, currently the site is still open if it closes we are well and truly screwed. No savings, we live hand to mouth and to make matters worse we cant get tax credits at the moment because we are paying back an overpayment.

LoudBatPerson · 20/03/2020 18:07

The speech did say that the 80% measure was being backdated. So if their company chooses to, they can re-hire all of those people but have them at home on retainer (and the company can claim the 80% to pay them).

Obviously that decision is in the companies hands and I expect many will not.

7thlevelofthecandycaneforest · 20/03/2020 18:07

I’m surprised at how much they have thrown at this to be honest. I’m impressed at the decisions being made and how they are trying to help everyone. It’s easy to criticise.

willowpatterns · 20/03/2020 18:07

The country can't go bankrupt, they've found the magic money forest!!!

Yes - and with any luck they've decided to cancel HS2...

EachandEveryone · 20/03/2020 18:08

What if the HB doesnt cover Londoners rent? What if the landlords dont get a mortage holiday because, guess what? They are mortgage free and will be expecting their rent on time as usual.

bringincrazyback · 20/03/2020 18:08

I'm self-employed, have lost my biggest contract as a direct result of the virus, and unless they're changing the criteria for claiming UC, won't be able to get it due to DH's income. Which I recognise makes me luckier than many, but we're not rolling in it, have substantial overheads and will feel the squeeze.

I think the 80% for employees is good, but am disappointed that the only advice being given to people like me (unless I've missed something) is 'claim UC', it's not realistic.

Juicyfrooty · 20/03/2020 18:08

Is the money the government is pledging to businesses to pay people wages a loan that they will eventually have to pay back?
